RESEARCH TOOLS
A great variety of tools are available to scientists during MBARI ocean research expeditions. Some technology is transferred from our many research collaborators, but the majority of our tools have been custom-designed and developed by engineers, scientists, and machine operations staff in-house.HYDRATES AND SEEPS

Satlantic’s In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer (ISUS) V3 nitrate sensor (developed in Ken Johnson’s laboratory at MBARI) uses advanced ultraviolet absorption technology to accurately measure nitrate concentrations in aquatic environments in real time. HOW THE ESP WORKS
The third generation (3G) ESP improves on the 2G in a number of ways and is currently under development (2017). The initial goal of the 3G ESP has always been to mount it on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV); giving this ecogenomic sensor mobility will be a transformative event in oceanography, as sampling events are no longer locked in one location, sampling water that happens MISSION TO THE DEEP EXHIBIT AT MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM About MBARI. Fall feels from the deep sea. This photo was taken by MBARI's remotely operated vehicle Tiburon on the Davidson Seamount at 2,669 meters (8,756 feet) deep. The orange feather stars (Florometra serratissima) are accompanied by primnoid coral (Narella sp.) and black coral (Trissopathes pseudotristicha). Davidson Seamount is home to lush communities of corals and sponges. It's an inactive underwater volcano that last erupted over 9,000 years ago. The peak lies 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) below the surface and its base is at 3,400 meters (11,154 feet). The seamount was so diverse that it was added to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in 2008. MBARI researchers continue to survey the region and find new species that call it home. #MBARI#deepsea

To celebrate Halloween, we're bringing you some ghostly critters from the deep Ghostshark and ratfish are common names used for a chimaera, a group of unusual fishes which, despite the common name, isn't really a shark at all! Their skeletons are made of cartilage, not bone. The males have prominent reproductive features called claspers, and the females lay eggs in leathery egg cases. These characteristics make sharks and rays their closest living relatives, but about 400 million years ago they branched off the evolutionary tree from those groups, remaining isolated ever since. Most species have a venomous spine in front of their dorsal fin. One of the oldest and yet least known groups of fishes alive today, ghost sharks are deep-dwelling and rarely seen alive. They can be found at depths to 2600 meters (8500 feet). #MBARI#ghostshark

Research programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) encompass the entire ocean, from the surface waters to the deep seafloor, and from the coastal zone to the open sea. The need to understand the ocean in all its complexity and variability drives MBARI's research and development efforts. -------------------------* Vision
