WHAT IS APRAXIA?
What is Apraxia? Apraxia is a type of motor speech disorder that affects the way the body is able to produce speech. Motor speech disorders are neurological in nature, meaning a child’s brain has difficulty coordinating the different body parts needed to produce speech—the tongue, lips, and lower jaw. Use a tongue depressor (This method should be done by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist!) With a tongue depressor push the tongue into the correct position for a /k/ or /g/ sound. If the child typically says the /t/ sound for the /k/ sound the PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSES Final Consonant Deletion Phonological Processes Bleile, Ken M. (1995). Knowing this helps us understand why when kids have trouble with the /f/ sound they most likely have trouble with the /v/ sound as well. WHAT ARE PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSES? What are Phonological Processes? Phonological processes are patterns of sound errors that typically developing children use to simplify speech as they are learning to talk. They do this because they don’t have the ability to coordinate the lips, tongue, teeth, palate and jawfor clear speech.
