IT’S OKAY TO TALK… October. I really dislike October. It’s dark, it’s cold and I have never been a fan of Halloween. Three years ago, my dislike for October became a hatred. As many of you are aware, my son, Stanley was born with a congenital heart defect and had to have open heart surgery at eleven days old. Tomorrow (18th October) marks the start of the most emotional eighteen days of my life. People say that time is a healer and I think that for the most part, that is true. However, when October rolls around, I just can’t shake away the memories of that period of time and it hurts. The strange thing is that it feels like I want to talk about the experience and I don’t want to forget it. I want to use it to remind myself of how lucky I am. I want to use it to make people realise that there are more important things in the world than teaching. I want to use it as a beacon of hope for anybody else who might be unfortunate enough to experience what we did. The next three weeks for me are going to be very similar to those moments when you are reminiscing about the holiday you have just come home from. “Oh, this time last week, we were at the crazy golf!” You know the moments I mean. For me it will be the phone call from my wife at the local hospital; the consultant telling us that there seems to be a problem with Stanley’s heart; the sausage and mash I didn’t eat; the scariest conversation I have ever had being told how very poorly my boy was; seeing him on a ventilator with an obscene amount of tubes pumping all sorts of medicine into his tiny body; looking over the notes every time he had an observation and becoming an expert in blood gases; handing him over to the surgeons; not seeing him for twelve hours; watching him struggle as a machine saved his life; being told that his lung had collapsed as they attempted to take him off of the ventilator; being told that he would be moving to the ward; taking him home. People always struggle to know what to say to me about this experience and I completely understand. It upsets me EVERY single time I talk about it, even when I think I’m cool with it but I still want to and need to talk about it. I don’t want to avoid it, even though it was an incredibly traumatic time. I want to remember the incredible NHS workers who looked after Stanley (and us) so incredibly. I want to remember the other people that we met along the way. I want to remember the moments when Stanley proved, beyond doubt, that he is myhero.
I’m not sure what the point of me writing this was really. It is quite cathartic, which is good, but maybe I’m hoping that people can appreciate the things that truly matter in their lives. That work and school isn’t the be all and end all. That we don’t always know what is happening or has happened in people’s lives and to be kind. I always give my children lots of squeezes but the next few weeks there are going to be many more extra ones flying around… Hug those that matter the most.Advertisements

THE EVIL THAT LURKS BENEATH“Get a grip.”
I said these words to myself today and I ashamed. It’s Friday and I should be celebrating the end of another week and the beginning of a weekend but I just can’t. I’m struggling. To the point where I told myself to get a grip, which is when I knew that I needed to speakout about it.
This is not a call for attention. I’m not doing it to make people to say nice things about me. I’m doing it to get it out of my system. The truth of the matter is that I don’t really like me at the minute. I can’t tell you why because I’m not entirely sure but I have an exceptionally low opinion of myself. I feel unworthy. I lack confidence and I constantly worry about what others think of me. The problem with speaking out and saying these things to people is that their natural reaction is to say something lovely in an attempt to make me feel better but it doesn’t work. I don’t believe it, even if they mean it. Where some teachers get that giddy feeling when a child tells them what an amazing teacher they are, I am just very cynical and politely say thank you and then quickly dismiss it. I know that with time this will pass. I keep myself preoccupied by posting little resources on Twitter, getting completely lost in teaching or a book, throwing myself into games with my children, but when the lights are switched off, that evil monster of self doubt rears its ugly head once more. I’m okay, I promise. Well, I’m not completely but it’s okay to not be okay. What I do know is that I can’t just get a grip. I wishit was that easy.
#PrimaryRocks was brilliant this week. It made me realise how I am not alone in these feelings and that these things come and go. If you are feeling anything that is negative, please speak out. Don’t suffer in silence. There are so many of us that feel the same way. Let’s get through it together.mrblackblogs

BOOK REVIEW: MO, LOTTIE AND THE JUNKERS BY JENNIFER KILLICK. This is my first foray into writing a book review. I feel extremely fortunate that I am reviewing a book written by one of the most interactive authors on Twitter and also one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of getting to know: Jennifer Killick. After the success of her Alex Sparrow series, Mo, Lottie and the Junkers has all the features of a Killick classic: characters from different walks of life that learn to respect and trust each other while becoming friends; evil villains; plot twists and, of course, hilarity throughout. Oh, and a definite resemblance to Back to theFuture!
Below is the fantastic front cover, illustrated by the super talented,Gareth Conway .
Written unlike any book I have read before, there are elements of a script for a vlog which allows our main protagonists, Mo and Lottie to tell of their encounter with the Junkers. Thrown together as a result of a new relationship between Mo’s mum and Lottie’s dad, the pair struggle to see eye to eye. Mo’s old house is now owned by a strange woman who takes to keeping the curtains closed at all times and just doesn’t seem quite right. At the same time as the new occupant, a new classmate named Jax turns up as well as a new lollipop man named Hector. On top of this, we are intriduced to the provider of the most delicious ice cream you could ever imagine, Mr Gideon…I wouldn’t trust it though! Lottie is suspicious of Jax from their very first meeting, a suspicion that is heightened when she finds a school picture from ten years ago that appears to have Jax in it! Mo just thinks she is jealous because Jax has become his friend.Report this ad
Needless to say, something strange is definitely happening and somebody is definitely trying to help Mo and Lottie work out what it is by passing them secret messages. What they don’t realise straight away is that they are against the clock and need to avoid the Junkers! A despicable group of people intent on using unsuspecting humans fordastardly purposes.
Mo and Lottie are characters that are undeniably likeable and Killick has recreated a relationship that all brothers and sisters can relate to. Lottie provides an excellent female protagonist that is determined, intelligent, strong-minded and unafraid to tell it like it is. She also likes to know other people’s secrets! Mo is a talented scientist who has the potential to change the world. The dialogue that Killick has created between the two shows humour, friendship, determination, panic, love and loss. It made me laugh, it made me cry. At the same time, she has created villainous characters that genuinely scare me. As I was in the grips of quite a suspenseful moment of the story, I could hear the tinkling of an ice cream van coming down my street…you can imagine my fear! This book is a real page turner. I comfortably managed it within a day such is the quality of the writing. Killick has a huge talent for exposing her readers to developing friendships. She manages to get across characters strengths and frailties and while her writing is hilarious, it also has to be noted how well she tugs at the heartstrings.
This is a book that I really enjoyed and needs to be a part of every book lover’s collection. _Mo, Lottie and the Junkers is available to pre-order now and will be released on the 18th April. It has also been selected as a book for the Summer Reading Challenge 2019._mrblackblogs

A NEW HALF TERM…
Today marks the end of my half term holiday and I have been busily preparing for the long run up to the Christmas holiday. I have done plenty of reading (mainly the Podkin One-Ear books by @kmlarwood ) ready to recommend to my class and also I have been excitedly thinking about using ‘Sky Song’ as my English lesson novel. Originally, I was going to use ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, but having read Abi Elphinstone’s (@moontrug ) beautiful story, I quickly changed my mind! I can already see how it is going to lend itself to some wonderful writing and also some beautiful art work and I can’t wait to be able to share it on Twitter. Alongside this, there is a great scheme of work on Abi’s websiteand also an
excellent set of VIPERS activities on Literacy Shed Plus (@LiteracyShed ). I love how new books are becoming so much more accessible to use in the classroom. As part of my English preparation, I have used a blank template from Verbivore Teacher and broken down some of the vocabulary from the Prologue of the story. Hopefully it will be up on the site soon. Here’s a sneak peek… There are lots of other texts that you can also go and choose from andalso contribute to!
Anyway, enough from me. Time for one final hurrah of a weekend before getting back to the grindstone. If you are just starting your half term holiday…enjoy every moment. This job is hard work and we all need to be kind to ourselves and to each other. Happy weekend folks!Neil

A MESSAGE FOR THE AUTHOR… I am investigating the possibility of creating a book of short stories for children by some wonderful authors and illustrators with the proceeds going towards charity. My son, Stanley, was born in October 2016 with an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. It was undiagnosed for a week before he ended up in Glenfield Hospital in Leicester and he needed life saving open heart surgery at just 11 days old. After his surgery, he was placed on an ECMO machine (essentially a bypass machine for his heart) for 40 hours in order to keep him alive. Stanley wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the NHS, the wonderful staff at Glenfield Hospital or the charity based at Glenfield…Heart Link. They have raised and donated over five million pounds to the children’s heart unit at Glenfield over the last 30 years, including funding the first ever ECMO machines in Britain in 1989. They provided parent accommodation and kitchens in the hospital and are there whenever you need them. Why a children’s book? Well, as a teacher and a great advocate of reading children’s literature it seemed like a perfect idea. Children are at the heart of this charity and what better vehicle is there to allow families an escape from some very dark times than a collection of wonderful stories? I know that time is tight. I know that people are busy. I know that there are many charities that probably ask the same sort of thing. I’m not a charity, I’m the dad of an amazing boy. My hero, Stanley. I’m a man who owes a lifetime of gratitude to a hospital and charity. I’m a man who knows nothing about the publishing business or if this project is even possible but I am also not somebody who gives up easily. I love children’s literature and the ability it has to whisk you off to another world. All I would like to know at the minute is who would be interested in being a part of this project? It might take a year…it might take two or three…I have no idea! So what do you say…fancy an adventure? Thanks for reading.
Neil.

TEN YEARS AND THREE DAYS DOWN… I am ten years and three days into my teaching career and I have never been happier. It has been an incredibly busy yet excellent week and fills me with unbridled excitement for the year ahead. Schools up and down the country welcomed their children back to school, hoping beyond hope that the first few days would pass without any hiccoughs. Our Leicestershire colleagues spent their first full week with their new classes, sinking their teeth into new routines, new topics and wonderful literature. My own class (the Owls) returned to school and to a teacher who has been transformed after spending a summer on Twitter! It’s been amazing to be able to recommend books that the children hadn’t heard of and that nobody had made a film of…yet! I let one year 6 girl borrow my copy of _The Storm Keeper’s Island _and the very next day she bought in her copy of _The Girl of Ink and Stars _for me toborrow!
I’ve also been using one page marking and it has been a great success. Not only is it quicker but I have been able to quickly identify and address issues within the following lesson. It has also allowed me to celebrate children’s work who wouldn’t normally have had this verbalised but written as a comment which doesn’t have nearly the same impact. A huge thank you to all on Twitter who offered advice as to how this one page should look. Here is the finalproduct…

The Owls have also enjoyed a much more fulfilling timetable with more organised structure. They managed to withstand my attempt at a French lesson at which I definitely need more practise! Any hints and tips would be gratefully received! The weeks that follow will no doubt throw unexpected curve balls and I feel a big debate about planning coming up, especially as there will be many (including myself) who will be subjected to planning scrutinies but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it! For me I will be attending Kinetic Letters training and I’m really looking forward to it having never received any handwriting training before! I will try and post again before next week and will hopefully offer something a little bit more tangible in terms of a link or a resource!Happy weekend!

MY CLASSROOM…
First of all I would like to show my genuine appreciation for the response to my last resource…it seems to have gone down well. I can’t believe how many people have taken an interest and it is very humbling. With that in mind I have another resource that has worked for me in the past and hope that it might help somebody else. Everybody views their classrooms differently. Some are very protective, some very open. Some like neutral displays, some like colourful. I don’t believe there is a definitive answer to what is right or wrong because it depends on the individual creating the spaces and the individuals that are going to use it and benefit fromit.
I use a mix of working walls that we update daily, work that the children have completed and also a lot of vocabulary based resources for English and Maths. With that in mind, I am sharing another resource that I used last year that the children really enjoyed using. It tries to encourage the children to be concise with their word choices and discourage them overusing the word ‘very’. As with all of our displays, the children are encouraged to get out of their seats to use them. Whilst this isn’t an exhaustive list, it prompts the children to think about the words they are using and whether they could improve what they have. They need to be made aware of the correct context of the words they are using and also the shades of meaning attached to each word. It also encourages some thesaurus work. At the end of the day, if it helps just one person then it is worthwhile sharing…I believe that we are stronger as a community when we work together. I know that I have taken lots of ideas and resources from a wide range of people in the short time I have been doing this and I really appreciate those that have shared. Please feel free to download, use and share with anyone that you think might benefit from this latest resource. Concise AlternativesEnjoy!
