ALAN SHAW'S ESSAY
The power of it does not just emanate from its eerie and mysterious atmosphere, its taste for conspiracy and intrigue, and its poignant love story which ends tragically in betrayal, murder and suicide. The force of the movie comes across in the way most scenes are ableFILM REFERENCES

Some called it "The rape of Owens Valley." At the opening ceremony for the aqueduct, Mulholland uttered his most enduring quote, "There it is. Take it." I believe a form of this quote echoes repeatedly throughout Lynch's movie as character after character repeats Diane's infamous words, "This is the girl."LYNCH'S 10 CLUES
Betty is given the key to Aunt Ruth's apartment because Aunt Ruth is dead, just as Diane is given another key because Camilla is dead (see clue #10). So if the Coco key is a clue, then Coco's relationship with the two main protagonists needs further examining. 6.CAST: THE COWBOY
Lafayette Montgomery, who plays the Cowboy in the first part, is not an actor but a film producer and good friend of David Lynch. He co-produced Lynch's "Wild at Heart" (1990) and "Twin Peaks" (1990-91). The Cowboy at the dinner party is played by a different, uncreditedactor. »
THE SYLVIA NORTH STORY The name Sylvia means "woman of the forest", and Diane is associated with the woods and countryside in a number of ways. First and most obviously, Betty's last name is Elms. Further, the movie makes a visual association between Diane and palm trees, evidently an association with Laura Palmer viaALAN SHAW'S ESSAY
To begin with, I think it is important to note that this film has both an internal structure and an external structure. The internal structure is the most complex, and it involves the way that the movie provides material that refers back to itself, creating overlapping dramatic constructions that can be linked together like puzzle piecesinto a
DIANE'S SUICIDE
The ninety-second coda that follows Diane's suicide is a cinematic space that persists after the curtain has dropped on her living consciousness, and this persistent space is the very theatre where the illusion of illusion is continually unmasked - where the Club Silencio audience as well as the Mulholland Drive spectators are repeatedly reminded of the magician's dialogue, that "This is all LOST ON MULHOLLAND DR. Marilyn Monroe, Hollywood's most famous sex symbol, has become a notable object of fascination for David Lynch. He even dedicated a song to her on Blue Bob, his cowritten album which has two tracks featured in MD ("Mountains Falling" and "Go Get Some").Here's a list of possible real life connections between Marilyn and Betty/Diane:MD THEORIES

Background & Motivation. However, as it turns out, there is still much more that can be said about Lynch's movie. In fact, the above interpretation is just scratching the surface of some the movie's thematic content, its enigmatic characterizations, its intricately threaded, multi-layered story line, and its complex symbolism and richtexture.
THE WIZARD OF OZ CONNECTION The overriding color at Winkie's diner is green. The capital of Oz is Emerald City, where green was naturally the color of choice. The Cowardly Lion came to Emerald City for courage. He ended up seeing "The Man behind the Wall (The Wizard) and passed out. Dan came to "Winkies" to finally get rid of this god-awful feeling.THE COFFEE CUPS
Diane's coffee cup at home is identical to those used in all the scenes at Winkie's. This leads us to three possible conclusions: Diane has reached a level of poverty she has to swipe the cups from Winkie's, which assumedly is a place she often visits. This adds up to her failure status, and the context in which she finally breaks down. CAST: REBEKAH DEL RIO Richard Green (The Magician) on Rebekah's performance. When we shot my scene, Rebekah Del Rio was there as well. We shot most of my wide shots first, and then we brought her in. Listening to that recording (of "Llorando") in this big theater was astounding. I mean, it is an astounding vocal rendition.DIANE'S SUICIDE

Switching apartment, sharing personal objects, and having harsh words, understanding each other's mood with few words (Diane doesn't bother to justify her mood and absence, Laura doesn't bother to elaborate), is a proof of a long and somehow deep relationship. If they were strangers, Diane wouldn't let her in, and bring the stuff to heroutside.

Initially, "Mulholland Dr." was to mark David Lynch's return to television. It is a retooling of a script originally shot as a 94-minute pilot for a TV series (co-written with TV screenwriter Joyce Eliason) for the channel ABC, which had approved the script, but chose not even to air the pilot once it was done in 1999, despite Lynch's labours to cut the project THE PHONE - MULHOLLAND-DRIVE.NET History of the Dreamworld in Phone Numbers - (HarryTuttle) 1- 2 - 3 - Phone Call Chain (anonymous) to Diane ("The girl is still missing"; "the same") 4 - Adam calls office ("everyone is fired") 5 - Joe takes the Phone Book. 6 - Rita refuses to call the police or the doctor. 7 - Betty calls aunt Ruth about Rita. Diane becomes someone else to avoid the guilt of Diane’s murderous deed. She becomes the idealized Betty to preserve her identification with (and jealous longing for) Camilla’s Hollywood success.
