DIEGO MARADONA'S NAPOLI ADVENTURE REMEMBERED IN STUNNING 2019 FILM * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 DIEGO MARADONA’S TIME AT NAPOLI IS THE STUFF OF LEGEND BUT ASIF KAPADIA’S DOCUMENTARY GOT TO THE HEART OF A REMARKABLE TALE,EXPLAINS ADAM BATE.
“I expect peace. The peace I didn’t have in Barcelona.” Diego Maradona found everything at Napoli. He was the genius behind their first Serie A title and won them a European trophy too. It was as a Napoli player that he lifted a World Cup and became a cultural icon. It was as a Napoli player that he lost a World Cup and his career as he knew it. Naples brought fame and glory, but it brought drugs and despair too.He expected peace.
But he had everything but peace. That was apparent from the outset. A crowd of 85,000 packed into the Stadio San Paolo on July 5, 1984. It was a rapturous welcome. The footage depicts a gladiator going into the arena. It was mayhem, a journalist thrown out of the frenzied press conference for daring to ask about the dreaded mafia, the Camorra. That was just the start. Kapadia’s film, which was released in cinemas in June 2019, chronicles this fascinating period in the life of one of sport’s most controversial figures. He has sifted through more than 500 hours of footage to produce a movie that is utterly immersive. The protagonists have been interviewed but there are no talking heads, their words merely accompany the images. It puts you at the centre of the storm and offers a window into a world of adulation that few have known. Kapadia has produced acclaimed films about Ayrton Senna and Amy Winehouse, and readily admits that he fell in love with both during the filmmaking process. His relationship with his latest subject is more complex and it is easy to understand why. Maradona is difficult to pin down, his life full of contradictions. A humble boy from the slums of Villa Fiorito who became an extrovert genius. A family man who betrayed his wife. A person obsessed with football who nevertheless succumbed to the distractions. Fernando Signorini, his personal trainer, seeks to explain that away by talking of two men, Diego_ _and Maradona. The former, he would run to the ends of the earth to help. The latter, he would run to the ends of the earth to avoid. He talks of a life both “tremendous and terrible” and both aspects are laid bare. “Maradona was the character he had to come up with,” says Signorini. The man himself replies: “If it wasn’t for Maradona, I would still be in Villa Fiorito.” Even his presence in Naples was a contradiction. This was the world’s most expensive player signing for a modest club in the poorest city in Italy, one in the midst of a financial crisis. “I asked for a house, I got a flat,” he complains. “I asked for a Ferrari, I got a Fiat.” In a sense, he could be talking about his team-mates too because life did not go as planned on the field either, at least at first. Maradona’s unique dribbling skills and extraordinary balance are beautifully captured but so too is the brutal defending of a bygoneera.
Maradona thrived in this adversity but the extent to which the people of Naples were regarded as second-class citizens is likely to shock modern audiences. The unwashed. The peasants. The cholera sufferers. This is how rival teams welcomed Napoli in banners and chants. Naples was described as the sewer of Italy. The nearby volcano Vesuvius, source of the famous eruption that once buried Pompeii, was encouraged to wash them all with fire. No wonder there was such joy when reigning European champions Juventus were beaten at San Paolo in that second season. The news reports of the day talked of heart attacks in the stands. Maradona was already a hero, but he was on the way to becoming something more. What this film does not shy away from are the murkier elements of Maradona’s world. He became a father after impregnating his sister’s friend only to deny it in the media and to his girlfriend, shunning his son for three decades. It seems astonishing that these personal issues were ongoing as he headed off to Mexico ’86 to become a true legend of the game. The same can be said of Maradona’s relationship with Carmine Giuliano of the Camorra, an Al Capone figure in the eyes of Maradona. “It was like being in a movie,” he says. It was Giuliano who hastened his addiction to drugs – “one hit and I felt like Superman” – and it was through that cocaine abuse that they were able, it seems, to control him. It was to bring about his downfall in the end but the ascent is also there in all its stupendous glory. What he calls the “symbolic revenge” over England after the Falklands War that featured his infamous handball and the outrageous solo goal that followed it. There is his brilliance against Belgium and the pass through to Jorge Burruchaga for the goal that won the tournament in the final against West Germany. “These are things that you do not dream of,” saysMaradona.
The Serie A success of the following season was, according to him, “the most important celebration” of his life. It marks the film’s high point. Maradona’s team-mate Ciro Ferrara describes that 1987 title win as “the social redemption of our city” and the scenes in Naples remain remarkable to witness. The party went on for two months. A banner outside the cemetery read: “You don’t know what youmissed.”
As for Maradona, the iconography was out of control. He was depicted as the baby Jesus. Even the nurse taking his blood tests, stole a vial and put it in the church. “It was like he chose us, he saved us,” recalls one observer. “He became a god.” He was Diego no more. Maradona took over. There was still success after that, including victory in the 1989 UEFA Cup win, but this was the end of the beginning. “I had nothing left to do,” says the man himself. “I had made the people happy. I wanted to end my career somewhere calmer.” He asked to leave but was denied by the president, who now admits: “I was Maradona’sjailor.”
A second title followed in 1990 but by this point Maradona was partying from Sunday to Wednesday, his cocaine addiction rampant. He would come home high and lock himself in the bathroom because he was afraid to be around his own children. The sciatica in his back necessitated five injections just to get him out on the pitch. “I felt he started to look for an escape,” says ex-wife ClaudiaVillafane.
If the 1986 World Cup had been the making of Maradona, the 1990 version on Italian soil would prove his undoing. In particular, a schedule that took his Argentina team to Naples to take on hosts Italy. Maradona stressed his commitment to the Neapolitan people and solicited their support but his words were interpreted as divisive bythe rest of Italy.
When Argentina succeeded in a penalty shootout, Maradona scoring his spot-kick, it was too much for a distraught nation to accept. “I am still angry with Diego,” admits Ferrara. A poll in La Repubblica called him the most hated person in Italy. The Argentina anthem was booed before the World Cup final but only one man who was the targetof their ire.
The descent is chronicled through excerpts from a wire-tapping operation into the Camorra’s activities that led to Maradona’s sentencing, but it was the one-year ban from football following a drugs test that really brought his time in Naples to a close. “When I arrived there were 85,000 there to greet me,” notes Maradona. “When I left, I was alone.” Though the film only touches on what followed, it could be argued that he has never been the same since. “When you are on the pitch, problems go away,” he once said. “Everything goes away.” But the ban took that from him. “They took away his life,” concludesVillafane.
It plays out as a tragedy in the true Shakespearean sense of the word – a character whose flaws lead to their downfall. The peace, it never came. In the sense that his woe was often self-inflicted, it is not always easy to sympathise. But the tale is wonderfully told and gets close enough to its source to provide the necessary empathy without losing any sense of wonder. Will there be another Maradona? The debate about who is the greatest footballer of them all will rage forever, but what is certain is that in the sanitised modern game, there will never be another life like Maradona’s. NFL WEEK 12'S WEDNESDAY INJURY AND ROSTER NEWS * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 Christian McCaffrey is making progress towards a potential return thisweek.
The Carolina Panthers running back is at practice Wednesday and will work in a non-contact red jersey, per NFL Network Insider IanRapoport.
CMC did not practice last week and missed his second straight game due to a shoulder injury. The running back previously missed six games due to an ankle injury. McCaffrey hurt the shoulder in his first game backin Week 9.
On Monday, Panthers coach Matt Rhule characterized the running back as“week to week.”
Getting back on the practice field Wednesday, even on a limited basis, is a positive sign that McCaffrey might be able to return this week versus the Minnesota Vikings. Still, several hurdles remain as we press towards the weekend. OTHER NEWS WE ARE KEEPING AN EYE ON WEDNESDAY: * The Houston Texans will be without wide receivers Randall Cobb (toe) and Kenny Stills (quad) for their Thanksgiving Day clash with the Detroit Lions. Rapoport reports that Cobb is dealing with a significant toe injury and is expected to miss several games. * Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel said safety Kenny Vaccaro and wide receiver Adam Humphries, both of whom are dealing with concussions, are scheduled to practice Wednesday. * Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery told reporters that he has cleared the league’s concussion protocol and expects to play Sunday vs. the Green Bay Packers. * Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer told reporters that the team will “wait and see” if Adam Thielen will be available for Sunday’s game against the Panthers. Thielen currently is on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The team activated guardDru Samia fromReserve/COVID-19.
* New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is returning to practice after missing the past two games with a shoulder injury. Darnold is expected to be a limited participant, but head coach Adam Gase said he will do “quite a bit.” Right tackle George Fant (knee/ankle) willnot practice.
* The Atlanta Falcons activated defensive end Dante Fowler from the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. * The Miami Dolphins have activated defensive tackle Christian Wilkins off the reserve/COVID-19 list. Source: Read Full Article* Tags 12's , I

NFL WEEK 12 GAME PICKS: WASHINGTON TOPS COWBOYS; STEELERS SWEEP RAVENS * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 _Gregg Rosenthal went 6-8 on his predictions for Week 11 of the 2020 NFL season, bringing his total record to 98-61-1. How will he fare in Week 12? His picks are below._THURSDAY, NOV. 26
HOUSTON TEXANS 27, DETROIT LIONS 20 _12:30 p.m. ET (CBS) | Ford Field (Detroit)_ Feel free to call Deshaun Watson one of the NFL’s top five quarterbacks at the Thanksgiving table, especially when he’s coming off one of his best career games against a Patriots defense with similar coverage tendencies to these Lions. The questionable status of two key Lions — Jenga piece Kenny Golladay and explosive runner D'Andre Swift — impacts the score prediction here, but I love the Texans to win either way, improving their record to 4-1 against teams that currently have a losing record. WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM 24, DALLAS COWBOYS 21 _4:30 p.m. ET (FOX) | AT&T Stadium (Arlington, Texas)_ Alex Smith vs. Andy Dalton in what is annually the most-watched time slot of the NFL season feels like taking a portal back to the innocent days of 2015. While the Dallas defense has greatly improved over the last month, Smith is playing better than I imagined possible for a plucky Washington outfit and is ready to spread some holidaycheer.
SUNDAY, NOV. 29
MIAMI DOLPHINS 30, NEW YORK JETS 17 _1 p.m. ET (CBS) | MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)_ Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will come after rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Sunday because that’s what Gregg Williams does, especially when trying to avoid his second 0-16 record in four years. I expect the Dolphins to have an answer because they learn from mistakes and already out-coached the Jets staff in a 24-0 shutout back in Week 6. ARIZONA CARDINALS 27, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 24 _1 p.m. ET (FOX) | Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass._ After facing Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson this season, Bill Belichick is probably ready to end his tour of the Quarterback Revolution. It’s clear that no amount of scheming is going to make the Patriots’ front seven talented enough to hang with players like Kyler Murray, especially when the opposing QB’s backed by a dynamic running game. Cam Newton is playing well enough to stay close in games, but not well enough to survive a defense ranked 25th in EPA anddead last in DVOA.
CAROLINA PANTHERS 28, MINNESOTA VIKINGS 27 _1 p.m. ET (FOX) | U.S. Bank Stadium (Minneapolis)_ These teams are evenly matched, with efficient offenses doing their best to cover up holes defensively (especially rushing the passer). The status of Teddy Bridgewater and Christian McCaffrey makes a difference here, but I like that Carolina’s coaching staff puts Teddy Two Gloves in more advantageous situations than Kirk Cousins by throwing more on early downs. In this Thanksgiving week, Teddy winning in Minnesota makes me sentimental. CLEVELAND BROWNS 30, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 20 _1 p.m. ET (CBS) | TIAA Bank Field (Jacksonville, Fla.)_ The Jaguars’ defense has played far better since the bye week (promise!), but a devastating new wave of injuries (Josh Allen, D.J. Hayden, C.J. Henderson and Daniel Thomas) should end that progress. The matchup sets up well for Baker Mayfield to finally put up numbers in normal weather. My original score prediction was closer when I thought Gardner Minshew (thumb) could return to the starting lineup for the Jaguars, but the ascension of Mike Glennon to the job makes you wonder about Jacksonville’s priorities down the stretch. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 30, TENNESSEE TITANS 27 _1 p.m. ET (CBS) | Lucas Oil Stadium (Indianapolis)_ Philip Rivers is playing well, fitting passes into tight windows to a growing group of receivers, while the Colts’ running game has suddenly come alive. These developments are not unrelated. Beating the same team twice in three games is a tall order, but I remain convinced that Indianapolis is quietly the tougher team up front on both sides of the ball than the Big, Bad Titans. NEW YORK GIANTS 24, CINCINNATI BENGALS 11 _1 p.m. ET (FOX) | Paul Brown Stadium (Cincinnati)_ The Giants’ COVID issues and coaching staff strife off the field belie a team that is increasingly cohesive on it. Daniel Jones is a big part of a running game that is giving the Giants an identity, while defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has schemed confusion and mistakes from much better quarterbacks than Bengals surprise starterBrandon Allen.
BUFFALO BILLS 31, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS 30 _1 p.m. ET (CBS) | Bills Stadium (Orchard Park, N.Y.)_ The Chargers, Steelers and Chiefs remain the only three teams to avoid a two-score loss this season. That figures to remain true for the Bolts this week against a Bills outfit still allergic to putting together a complete game on both sides of the ball. The return of Joey Bosa last week and possibly Austin Ekeler this week gives Los Angeles hope in what should be another narrow loss to a quality opponent. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS 31, ATLANTA FALCONS 28 _1 p.m. ET (CBS) | Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta)_ After their emotional Sunday night loss, the Raiders have to get up for a dangerous 10 a.m. PT game in a lifeless Atlanta dome. With Julio Jones already dubbed a game-time decision, the Falcons may not have the firepower to keep up with one of the NFL’s most balanced, consistent and diverse offenses. Jon Gruden is a good coach, people! PITTSBURGH STEELERS 27, BALTIMORE RAVENS 24 _TBD | Heinz Field (Pittsburgh)_ The Ravens aren’t _that_ far off. The Week 8 game against Pittsburgh was typical of this snakebitten season: Baltimore dominated up front, only to lose because of turnovers. Now the Ravens are soft up the middle on both sides of the ball because of injuries and missing running backs due to COVID-19, which has the offense looking slow. With Ben Roethlisberger throwing better each week, even a great Lamar Jackson performance may not be enough. _(__UPDATE__: The league announced Wednesday that Ravens-Steelers game scheduled for Thursday has been moved to Sunday afternoon.__The game time and broadcast network are yet to be announced.)_ LOS ANGELES RAMS 27, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 23 _4:05 p.m. ET (FOX) | SoFi Stadium (Inglewood, Calif.)_ This score comes from my football-addicted 5-year-old son, Walker, who says, “The Rams beat the Bucs, who are better than the 49ers.” It’s hard to argue with that logic, although the possible return of Deebo Samuel and Raheem Mostert to a Niners offense that always gives the Rams problems figures to make this another Shanahan-McVay showdown that winds up closer than expected. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 30, DENVER BRONCOS 20 _4:05 p.m. ET (FOX) | Empower Field at Mile High (Denver)_ Back in May, I wrote about the Saints having the NFL’s best, most complete roster. Now in late November, they are Football Outsiders’ top team by far in overall efficiency, ranking in the top five in offense, defense and special teams. They have too many ways to win, no matter who is at quarterback, especially against a team as uneven asthe Broncos.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 30, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS 28 _4:25 p.m. ET (CBS) | Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Fla.)_ I am hesitant to bury the Bucs because their defense is still so good and provides a challenge Patrick Mahomes hasn’t faced all season. I am hesitant to pick the Bucs because their offense asks Tom Brady to do the things he’s least comfortable doing (holding the ball, taking hits, throwing deep) while providing too few of the things that he likes, such as a running back with two working hands. The Chiefs are 18-1 in their last 19 games. I’ve picked against them twice in that span and even that feels disrespectful. Nothing makes me feel dumber than watching Patrick Mahomes break the quarterback position when I foolishly thought it might not happen. GREEN BAY PACKERS 23, CHICAGO BEARS 17 _8:20 p.m. ET (NBC) | Lambeau Field (Green Bay, Wis.)_ Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to see as many wide-open receivers as usual against this sound, well-coached Bears defense. Aaron Jones’ mini-slump may even continue. But there’s little reason to think the Bears’ skill position players — including the quarterback — will be put in a position to make any of it matter. I’m thankful this is Chicago’s last prime-time game.MONDAY, NOV. 30
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 30, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 19 _8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN) | Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia)_ The Seahawks’ defense has been good enough in three of their last four games, with Carlos Dunlap adding some necessary pass-rush boost. _Good enough_ is all this unit needs to be! In Philadelphia, the ‘Hawks face an offense that ends slumps. The Eagles’ run-first approach plays to Seattle’s strengths, and Carson Wentz — even with shackles on — just keeps making mistakes. _Follow Gregg Rosenthal on Twitter._ Source: Read Full Article* Tags 12 , game

ALABAMA COACH NICK SABAN TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19, WILL NOT COACH IRON BOWL VS. AUBURN * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 College football’s top-ranked team won’t have its head coach on the sidelines when it hosts its biggest rival Saturday. Nick Saban tested positive for COVID-19 and will not coach Alabama in the Iron Bowl versus Auburn, the school announced. It’s the second positive test in six weeks for the 69-year-old Saban. Alabama has ruled out a false positive this time around because Saban has “very mild symptoms.” “I was informed this morning that I had tested positive,” Saban told reporters. “It was a PCR test, which was different than the false positive I had before. I don’t really have any cardinal signs of the virus right now. No fever, no loss of taste or smell, no muscleaches.”
Saban said offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian “will kind of oversee things in the building in my absence.” Sark has previously served as a head coach at USC and the University of Washington, posting a 46-35 mark over six-plus seasons (2009-15). He was in line to lead Alabama against Georgia in mid-October when Saban first tested positive, only to see his boss cleared in time for the SEC showdown. The Crimson Tide (7-0) earned the top spot in Monday’s initial College Football Playoffs rankings. Alabama has lost two of its past three meetings with Auburn but hasn’t lost to its in-state nemesisat home since 2010.

DIEGO MARADONA DEAD: JOSE MOURINHO PAYS EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE AFTER ARGENTINA ICON’S DEATH * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 Diego Maradona’s death at the age of 60 drew tributes from throughout the sporting world, with Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho posting an emotional message on Instagram. Maradona died as the result of a cardiac arrest. Maradona will be remembered as one of the best players of all time after an incredible career. The left-footed supremo played for Napoli, Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Newell’s Old Boys during his club career, but it was on the international stage where he truly excelled. Maradona won the Golden Ball award for the best player at the 1986 World Cup as he carried Argentina to victory. He scored one of the most controversial goals of all time against England en route to victory, before also netting one of the finest goals ever seen as he took on the entire England team by himself. Maradona then carried Argentina to the 1990 World Cup final against Germany, where they were beaten at the Stadio Olympico. After retiring, he took up managerial positions at the Argentine national team, Al-Wasl and later Gimnasia y Esgrima, where he manageduntil his death.
His death sent shockwaves throughout the sporting world, with tributes pouring in from all over the world. Argentina has entered into three days of mourning, while schools in Naples will close for a day, such was his impact on the city. And Tottenham boss Mourinho posted an emotional tribute of his own to Maradona via his Instagram page. He posted five images of himself with the former player, each seemingly at a different point in his career. Captioning the post, he wrote: “Don Diego…. damn dude I miss you” with two heart emojis and a crying emoji. Maradona visited Wembley Stadium during Spurs’ temporary residence there, before Mourinho came to the club. > View this post on Instagram>
> A post shared by Jose Mourinho (@josemourinho) He did, however, meet England captain Harry Kane, who took to Twitter to post a message of his own. Kane tweeted out an image of himself, Mauricio Pochettino and Maradona in the dressing room at Wembley. Captioning the post, he wrote: “Privileged to have met him. Very sadnews.
“RIP Diego.”

ARTETA RESPONDS TO CLAIM PEPE’S ARSENAL CAREER COULD BE OVER AFTERRED CARD
* Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 Mikel Arteta insists Nicolas Pepe has his "full support" and rubbished claims the winger's career at Arsenal is over after his recent sendingoff.
Pepe was given his marching orders 51 minutes into the Gunners' clash at Leeds on Sunday after headbutting Ezgjan Alioski during a heatedon-pitch exchange.
Arsenal held on for a point at Elland Road but Arteta was furious after the final whistle, branding Pep's actions "unacceptable". This gave rise to speculation the Ivorian's career in north London could be all but over, as Arteta has shown he has a ruthless streak when it comes to acts of petulance in the past. The Gunners boss banished Matteo Guendouzi from first-team training last season after the midfielder clashed with Brighton's Neal Maupay during a 2-1 defeat at the Amex. Guendouzi has not featured for the Gunners since the incident in June and was loaned out to Hertha Berlin this season. Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil has not featured in over eight months and has been left out of Arsenal's Premier League and Europa League squads to see out the remainder of his £350,000-per-week deal. But Arteta has played down speculation that Pepe's career will follow a similar trajectory, while he also confirmed the player has added to his public apology with a private one. Asked if Pepe's time at the Emirates is over, Arteta said: "Absolutely not. I will give Nico my full support all the time…. the threat to finish his career, it is not at all like that." "He knows the things he has to improve. I have a lot of responsibility to get the best out of him… I cannot fault at all his effort." _ SHOULD MIKEL ARTETA PUNISH NICOLAS PEPE FOR HIS SHOW OF PETULANCE AGAINST LEEDS? HAVE YOUR SAY HERE. _ Pepe failed to make good on rare start in the Premier League and now faces a three-match ban in the competition. But he is available for Thursday's Europa League tie with Molde, while Arteta insists the 25-year-old is still adapting to his new surroundings after his £72million transfer from Lille last year. The Gunners boss added: "He needs to feel that myself and club are going to protect him. "We're giving him time and he needed some time to adapt to the Premier League, a new city, a new language and a new environment. "You could see at the end of last season. I am going to be very demanding because you can see what he can do. He has reacted the right way and hopefully I can see a player that shows that every week." _SIGN UP TO THE MIRROR FOOTBALL EMAIL_ _HERE_ _FOR THE LATEST NEWS AND TRANSFER GOSSIP._ Source: Read Full Article * Tags Arse , Mikel Arteta, Nicolas Pepe

‘A TROUBLED GENIUS’: FOOTBALL LEGEND DIEGO MARADONA DEAD AT 60 * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 Diego Maradona, the Argentine football god who many rate as the finest player ever, is dead. He was 60. He died of a heart attack, having undergone brain surgery earlier this month, a member of his entourage told AFP. Argentine president Alberto Fernandez immediately announced three days of national mourning in the South American country. Shortly before the announcement that shocked a nation, Argentine media reported Maradona had suffered a serious health setback on Wednesday and was being treated by doctors at his home north of Buenos Aires. “There are four ambulances at the door of the residence. They have summoned family members to come. It is serious,” the TyC Sportschannel reported.
LEGEND REMEMBERED AS ‘A TROUBLED GENIUS’ Diego Maradona starred for Napoli._Source:Getty_ He dominated the 1986 World Cup like few have. Credit: Mike King/Allsport_Source:Getty_ Maradona was football’s archetypal troubled genius, a world-beating player whose life and career scaled the most dazzling heights but also plumbed the darkest depths. He became a global icon after leading Argentina to the 1986 World Cup but he was not a squeaky clean idol like Pele, and made little attempt to hide his fiery personality and many vices. “I am black or white, I’ll never be grey in my life,” he oncesaid.
Maradona was short, powerful and quick. He was also a ferocious and astute competitor who refused to be intimidated even though many opponents tried. Above all, he was sublimely and imaginativelyskilful.
“No ball ever had a better experience than when it was at his left foot,” said his Argentina teammate Jorge Valdano. However, while Maradona is remembered for his masterly composure on the ball, he was also famous for his frequent lack of control both on the field and off. He struggled with addiction, notably to cocaine, and with his weight. Diego Armando Maradona was born on October 30, 1960, in Lanus, just outside Buenos Aires, and grew up in one of the poorest areas of theArgentine capital.
He made his debut for Argentinos Juniors just before his 16th birthday and his debut for Argentina at age 16 in February, 1977. His career is defined by the World Cup, the four he played in and theone he missed.
“I have two dreams,” Maradona told Argentine television at the age of 17. “My first dream is to play in the World Cup. And the second dream is to win it.” Maradona lived his dream. Argentina, the hosts, went on to win the competition for the first time. The following year, under Menotti, Maradona led Argentina to victory in the under-20 World Cup in Japan, winning the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player. His senior World Cup debut in 1982 in Spain went badly. Maradona was treated brutally by defenders and ended his tournament with a red card for retaliation as Argentina, already eliminated, lost to Brazil. He atoned four years later, propelling his country to victory in Mexico and making the tournament his own. In the final, Maradona set up the 86th-minute winner against West Germany. He scored twice in the semi-final against Belgium, beating four defenders for the second. But the match that defined his tournament, and possibly his international career, was the 2-1 quarter-final win over England, in which he scored two goals that will be remembered forever — for verydifferent reasons.
In the 51st minute, as Peter Shilton reached to catch the ball, Maradona, some seven inches shorter, jumped alongside him and with a deftness that fooled the eye, flicked the ball through the England goalkeeper’s arms and into the net. After the game, Maradona said he scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” Four minutes later, Maradona picked up the ball in his own half, beat six England players, including Shilton, before squeezing home. FIFA later named it the “Goal of the Century”. In 1990 in Italy, almost immobile because of an injury to his much-kicked left ankle, Maradona steered a defensive and limited Argentine team back to the final even though they won just two games and scored only five goals. In a dire final, it took Andreas Brehme’s 85th-minute penalty for West Germany to this time get the better of Maradona. Four years later in the United States, Maradona seemed restored to health. He scored against Greece and celebrated by racing to scream into a TV camera, a disturbing mixture of joy, relief and rage. But he ended his last World Cup like his first, prematurely. After Argentina beat Nigeria in their second group game, Maradona failed a test for ephedrine and was thrown out of the tournament. (Photo by Rodrigo Valle/Getty Images)_Source:Getty_ A similar pattern of wild highs and lows marked Maradona’s club career. Maradona moved to the club he supported, Boca Juniors, in 1981 and won his sole Argentine league title the following season. He left for Barcelona for a world record fee in 1982. He won the Copa Del Rey in his first season but the club only finished fourth in theleague.
He missed much of the following campaign after Athletic Bilbao’s Andoni Goikoetxea broke his ankle, and when Barca lost to Bilbao in that year’s cup final, Maradona started a spectacular mass brawl, flooring four opponents. Facing a ban in Spain, Maradona moved to Napoli, becoming the first player to break the world transfer record twice. His dazzling play transformed a club from a poor, much-mocked city and led them to their only two Serie A titles. In a whirlwind seven years he fathered an illegitimate child, made friends with the local mafia and enemies of the tax collectors. He also fell deep into cocaine addiction. His tempestuous time in Italy effectively ended in April 1991 when he tested positive for cocaine and was banned for 15 months. He wound down his playing career with one season at Sevilla, one at Newell’s Old Boys and two at his beloved Boca. (Photo by Marcos Brindicci/Getty Images)_Source:Getty_ Over the next two and a half decades he had six short and unsuccessful stints managing clubs in Argentina, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico, and also two fiery years as Argentina coach from 2008-10. Even though Argentina suffered a record 6-1 defeat by humble Bolivia in qualifying, and Maradona was banned for two months at the end of 2009 for an obscene tirade at journalists, he still led the team to the World Cup in South Africa where they won their group before being thrashed 4-0 by Germany in the quarter-finals. All the while, Maradona’s off-field problems continued. He went into drug rehab on several occasions. When he quit cocaine, he binged instead on drink, cigars and food and ended up in hospital in2007.
He was a strident supporter of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, whose image he had tattooed on his shoulder, and Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. In 2000, FIFA ran an online Player of the Century poll. Maradona gained 54 percent of the vote, Pele was second with 18 percent. FIFA declared them joint winners. Maradona married his long-time girlfriend Claudia Villafane in 1984. They had two daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, and divorced in 2004. He also had a son, Diego Junior, born in Naples in 1986, although he only acknowledged paternity in 2004.– AFP

DIEGO MARADONA DEAD: BRAZIL LEGEND PELE PAYS TRIBUTE * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 The Argentinian football legend died at home, his lawyer has confirmed, a fortnight after leaving hospital following surgery for a blot clot in his brain. Maradona is widely recognised as one of the greatest footballers of all time, leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 where he gained notoriety for the ‘Hand of God’ goal against England. He began his career at Argentinos Juniors before moving on to Boca Junior where he was quickly picked up by Barcelona. Maradona achieved legendary status with Italian side Napoli, after helping the Serie A side win the title in 1987 and 1990, along with an Italian Cup in 1987 and a Uefa Cup in 1991. However, while Maradona’s illustrious football career was starting to take shape in Italy, so was a cocaine addiction. He was slapped with a 15-month suspension for violating drug regulations in 1991 and was thrown out of the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for ephedrine. The final years of his career were masked in controversy, but his talents on the football pitch inspired a generation. Brazil legend Pele, also regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, paid his own tribute to Maradona following the news. As quoted by Reuters, Pele admitting that he is sad to “lose friendsthis way”.
He added: “Certainly one day we’ll kick a ball together in the skyabove.”
Current Argentina captain Lionel Messi admitted five years ago that Maradona helped shape his path into football. “I never followed anyone in particular, although when I started to think for myself Diego had recently returned home,” hesaid in 2015.
“That was in 1993. He joined Newell’s Old Boys when he came back from Spain and was part of the national team that qualified for USA’94.
“If anybody inspired me starting out, it was undoubtedly him.” The Argentinean Football Federation issued a tribute to Maradona, writing: “The Argentine Football Association, through its President Claudio Tapia, expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona. “You will always be in our hearts.” Gary Lineker, who played against Maradona in the 1986 World Cup, posted a poignant tribute on his Twitter page. He wrote: “Reports from Argentina that Diego Armando Maradona hasdied.
“By some distance the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time. “After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he’ll finally find some comfort in the hands of God.” Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford posted an image of Maradona during his playing days with the caption: “Legendary”, along with a heartbroken emoji. Chris Sutton posted: “Very sad news this about Diego Maradona. He was an absolute genius.” Italian side Fiorentina posted a tribute of their own, writing: “A name that will live on in the history of football forever. “Rest in peace, Diego Armando Maradona.” Source: Read Full Article* Tags ctp_video ,

IAN WRIGHT HITS OUT AT ARSENAL’S "TOXIC" FANBASE OVER MIKEL ARTETACRITICISM
* Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 Ian Wright has sent a strongly-worded message to Arsenal fans calling for them to back Mikel Arteta amid "toxic" criticism of the Gunnersboss.
Arteta led Arsenal to FA Cup glory last season just eight months after he replaced Unai Emery in the Emirates hot seat. But the Spaniard finds himself in the spotlight due to his side's mixed start to the current campaign. The Gunners sit 12th in the Premier League, slipping to a 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa and a 0-0 draw at Leeds in their most-recentoutings.
In the latter, Arsenal played almost the entire second half with 10 men after Nicolas Pepe's sending off, while Leeds went close to grabbing all three points. And with just one win and one goal scored in the last five league games, Arsenal's style of play under Arteta has come under particular scrutiny from some of the club's fans. In response, Gunners legend Wright has urged supporters not to be "so toxic" and to give their manager the time he needs to return his sideto winning ways.

"The Arsenal fanbase at the moment need to just be a little bit more patient and remember what he is trying to turn around," Wright told his _Wrighty’s House_ podcast . "Something’s happening defensively and yes, Leeds could’ve beat us, but they didn’t. That’s a game we could’ve crumbled in a fewyears ago easily.
"He’s working on defence, trying to get something going in the midfield to then help the forwards. "It’s not going to happen overnight. "We can’t be this feast and famine club, with our fanbase being so toxic some of the times. It’s horrible, it’s uncomfortable to listen to some of the stuff." Arsenal return to action on Thursday evening as they travel to Molde in the Europa League. _SIGN UP TO THE MIRROR FOOTBALL EMAIL_ _HERE_ _FOR THE LATEST NEWS AND TRANSFER GOSSIP._ Source: Read Full Article* Tags Arsena , Ian

DIAZ IS SET TO START FOR REAL MADRID AT INTER BUT HE IS NOT WANTED * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/25/2020 PETE JENSON: ONLY 99 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL THIS SEASON, THIRD-CHOICE AND NOT RATED BY ZINEDINE ZIDANE… MARIANO DIAZ IS SET TO START FOR REAL MADRID AT INTER MILAN AS THEIR STRIKER CRISIS GOES ON BUT HIS FUTURE IS ALMOST CERTAINLY AWAY FROM THE BERNABEU * MARIANO DIAZ IS LIKELY TO START UP FRONT FOR REAL MADRID AGAINSTINTER MILAN
* ZINEDINE ZIDANE HAS A STRIKER SHORTAGE WITH KARIM BENZEMA AND LUKAJOVIC OUT
* BUT ZIDANE DOESN’T RATE DIAZ, WHO HAD TRANSFER OFFERS FROM PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS * HE HAS ONE GOAL IN TWO APPEARANCES AND HAS ALWAYS FIRED WHEN GIVENA CHANCE
* DIAZ WILL NOW THE LEAD THE LINE IN THE VITAL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GAMEAT SAN SIRO
Zinedine Zidane has a reputation for being the coach who backs his players but the support is not for everyone. Dani Ceballos, Marcos Llorente and Sergio Reguilon are at Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham respectively because the Real Madrid coach deemed them surplus to requirements. When all three get called up for the Spain squad questions are asked of Zidane’s judgement and those same questions were asked at the weekend when Mariano Diaz was Real Madrid’s best player. Why has Zidane ignored him for so long? Mariano Diaz is set to be handed a rare start for Real Madrid against Inter Milan on Wednesday Diaz scored Real’s goal in their 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Saturday with Karim Benzema injuredAppearances: 42

Why did it take an injury to Karim Benzema and a coronavirus positive for Luka Jovic to leave the manager with no choice but to play a player who had various English clubs trailing him in the last transfer window but who has never lost faith in his ability to make the grade at the Spanish champions? Mariano will be needed on Wednesday night again in what is Real Madrid’s most important game of the season so far, against InterMilan.
There is still no Benzema and still no Jovic. The 27-year-old will be out to make yet another point but such is Zidane’s inflexibility in terms of changing his mind about a player it may be that Mariano is playing on Wednesday night, not for his Madrid future, but to improve his options at the end of the season or even in January when the window opens once more. Mariano was offered around in the summer and both West Ham and West Brom showed an interest. It was his decision to stick it out despite Zidane’s reluctance to put his faith in him that made any deal anon-starter.
Mariano has always scored goals. He originally signed for Real Madrid’s C team in 2012 and when he moved up to the B-team he scored 32 goals in 44 games. When he failed to go to the next level – more through lack of opportunities than failure to take them – he moved to French side Lyon and his impressive goal-scoring record continued with 18 goals in 37 appearances. In 2018 he rejoined Madrid from the French side for 21m but chances have been few and far between. Karim Benzema is still nursing a tweaked muscle sustained in Madrid’s defeat by Valencia Zidane doesn’t rate Diaz though and he would have been allowed to leave over the summer So far in the Champions League he has played just 78 minutes. And that after scoring a brilliant goal back in September 2018 under Julen Lopetegui against Roma. He scored that goal with the number seven on his back. While others had cowered away from taking Cristiano Ronaldo’s old shirt number in the first campaign without him Mariano was up for the challenge. ‘It’s just a number even though I respect those who have worn it,’ he said after scoring that stunner against Roma. ‘Mariano honours the 7’ read Marca’s headline and Raul – another famous Real Madrid number seven – went down to the dressing room to congratulate him. Diaz was sold to French side Lyon but was bought back in 2018 for 21m after catching the eye Despite that great start he played less than an hour more of football in the competition and when Lopetegui was replaced by first Santiago Solari and then by the returning Zidane he has been called up less andless.
He has never let it affect his fitness or his mental state. It took him just 30 seconds to score in El Clasico when he came on towards the end of last season and just two minutes at the weekend againstVillarreal.
The way he powered in front of Mario Gaspar at the weekend to score Real Madrid’s goal reminded everyone of his predatory instincts and finisher’s hunger and his all-round performance was such that Madrid’s team performance tailed off when he was taken off late inthe second half.
Zidane was asked why he was taken off when the team were in desperate need of a winning goal. He said it was because Mariano had hardly played and therefore was struggling to go the full 90 minutes. Whose fault is that? Madrid fans ask. Diaz helped Real win LaLiga last season by scoring the winner against Barcelona in El Clasico You get the feeling even a stellar performance on Wednesday night will only raise the club’s chances of selling him in the next window so they can save for Kylian Mbappe or even Erling Haaland. When Zidane decides about a player it is hard for him to change his mind. It feels like he was wrong about Reguilon, Llorente and Ceballos. His excuse with those three was that there were other options he preferred. With Mariano Diaz there is no such justification. Madrid don’t have many options at centre-forward beyond Benzema. They lack variation in personnel and formation. They need a forward who scores goals like Mariano does, and he doesn’t need too many minutes to do it.SHARE THIS ARTICLE
