NORTH BALDWIN SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEERS HELPING TENSAW RIVER FLOODVICTIMS

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — Local search and rescue volunteers are standing by to help north Baldwin County residents still dealing with major flooding from the Tensaw River. North Baldwin Sheriff's Search and Rescue volunteers said they assisted Marine Patrol on Monday in evacuating one home. On Tuesday, high waters still posed a danger around hundreds of homes along the Tensaw River. Residents living in the area are still dealing with the surge, which has put houses and those braving the rapidly-moving water at risk. James Phillips is one of more than a dozen volunteers with North Baldwin Sheriff's Search and Rescue. He said they're continuing to watch out for those living through the conditions. "This water is very dangerous. It's swift water, which we're not used to in this area. It'll turn your boat sideways, and if you were to get jammed on something, it'll suck your boat down," said Phillips. Phillips said while many folks have evacuated, others chose to ride itout.
According to Phillips, one family lost power yesterday and needed to be rescued due to a health emergency. "We actually pulled our boat up beside the steps. They came out and they had two dogs with them. We loaded the dogs and their bags, and got them on our boat," Phillips said, "And this was on the higher part of the island. This was a place they probably felt sure wouldn'tflood."
Flooding from northern Alabama has caused high waters in the area before, but folks tell NBC 15 this is the highest they've ever seenit.
Phillips is encouraging people to stay away from the water unless absolutely necessary. "All the odds are against you. If you need to be out there, wear a life-jacket. Be very careful in everything you do. If something happens, we'll be prepared to go, but we really don't want to be on the water," said Phillips. EMA officials are expecting the flood waters to crest soon and begin receding slowly. However, that could take several more days.TRENDING
