MY FAVORITE PAINTING Randy Moberg, based in Fairhope, Alabama, is known and commended for his oil paintings and drawings. Born in California, Moberg and his parents returned to Mobile, Alabama, where Randy grew up and enlisted in the Navy for four years of engineering training. 3 ARTISTS TALK PORTRAITURE, HISTORY, AND IDENTITY For centuries, women’s portraits that made it into the Western canon gave the subjects little agency. A stroll through any large museum shows nude women in postures either subservient or exalted to goddess-like status. THE WONDERFUL, WACKY WORLD OF WERNER WILDNER Werner Wildner is a household name for the old Nashville, if not yet for the new. In the later years of his life, he became a recluse, his work evidenced in increasing preoccupation with the grotesque and eventually trickling off entirely in production. TREY GOSSETT SCULPTURE IN CLAY AND WOOD As an artist and trained artisan, Trey Gossett brings the best of both worlds to his contemporary, three-dimensional sculptures. “I consider myself a fine artist, making fine artwork, but I also have a fairly strong crafts background, so finding a need to create well-crafted objects that hold their own as a piece of fine art is important to me,” says the 33-year-old East Nashville artist. COWAN COLLECTION RETURNS TO THE PARTHENON In the late 1920s, James Cowan, an Illinois insurance agent, donated sixty-three works of art to the Parthenon Museum’s Collection under two conditions: Nashville had to build a fire-proof gallery in the Parthenon, and his identity had to remain anonymous until after hisdeath.

MY FAVORITE PAINTING Growing up in Upstate New York, I spent much of the winter cross-country skiing with my family. The winter of 1977 was particularly long, and I easily remember it because Bus Romeling presented my mother a painting of Old Man Winter’s grave with the dates December 1977 – March 1978.
