KLEINE RESEARCH
I. What is Kleine's research question? What is he trying to figureout?
Kleine is questioning the way academic writers write research papers and how he can get students to participate in this process rather than just copying from textbooks. He is trying to figure out the most beneficial ways to research. II. Define the following terms: heuristic, exigence, epistemology. heuristic- a problem solving pattern exigence- a situation that demands immediate attention epistemology- the theory or study of knowledge III. What are the pedogogical implications Kleine reaches at the end of his study (summarize these)? Though Kleine’s findings were pretty basic. The pedagogical implications Kleine reaches include promoting reading inside the classrooms as well as outside and allowing research from other areas than the library taking the time to encourage students to participate in research tasks in a range of areas from natural and social sciences and helping students already writing across the curriculum to better their own processes. Over time the gap between scholars and regular readers by reading casually outside the classroom. Posted 6th February 2013 by Anonymous0

BERKENKOTTER & MURRAYI. Summary
This reading was a description of Carol Berkenkotter's study of Donald Murray's writing style and his strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Before Carol's study on writing most studies consisted of putting a professional writer in an unnatural setting like in a laboratory and give them a prompt as well as only an hour to write. These types of studies were never able to truly show the process of true writers in their own element until Carol Berkenkotter's study. She noted that Murray developed style goals and that he understood his own personal style and the notion of planning, drafting, editing, reviewing. But, in her opinion, he is wrong about his assertion that professional writers only consider their reader when doing external revision (Berkenkotter 228). Murray discusses his views of the study and says that his view of the "academic" world wastoo closed.
II. Reflection
All in all I found both Carol Berkenkotter's research and Donald Murray's analysis to be very dry and drawn out and somewhat boring. Though I see the benefits of researching and analyzing the writing process of individual I feel as if the writing process is unique to each person so analyzing the writing of one man or woman is not really helpful. In my opinion seeing the writing process of another individual, professional writer or not, will not necessarily help the reader become a better writer. Posted 28th January 2013 by Anonymous0

“READING GAMES” BY KAREN ROSENBERG SUMMARY This article was mainly about the ways to dissect an academic reading assignment. Karen Rosenberg starts out by describing the troubles she faced when she began reading academic writings. She told about dosing off and daydreaming during reading. Then she discussed how she eventually figured out the key to reading an article. She realized that you are joining in on a conversation. Realizing the author’s goals will help you understand the article. There are a few strategies for reading these articles. First you have to figure out who the author is “talking” to, so you know if you are in foreign or familiar territory. To figure out the audience you must analyze what source the article is from. After you figure out the audience, realize the author will assume you have some knowledge on their article and their writing probably will not be appealing to you. Focus on the important aspects and skim the unimportant stuff. Discover the architecture of the article. The title can help you understand what you are supposed to be looking for. The introductions and abstracts usually have the same purpose, to tell you what the main points of the article are. Abstracts are usually dense and hard to read. The introduction should guide you in how the article is organized. Section headings give you a preview of their section. The conclusion can help you really figure out the author’s argument. Figuring out the main argument is the key to understand the article. Look closely in the introduction for the author’s argument. Now that you know the main argument you know what to look for in the article. Read smarter, notharder.

LAMOTT & ALLEN
I._ _ _Shitty First Drafts_ - Anne Lamott - Summary Anne Lamott's article is very interesting commenting on the scarcity of elegant first drafts. According to her it is almost better to create a first draft that is poor in order to create your best work. In the article a friend of hers calls the first draft your down draft because your are getting your ideas down on the page. Your second draft is your up draft because in this draft you fix up your down draft. You finish with your dental draft, where you clean everything up looking for all of the holes in your paper. The best way to create this first draft is to forget about what other people will say and get all that you need down on the page as a base as you mold your masterpiece of a paper. II. _The Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer_ - Sarah Allen -Summary
Sarah Allen, a writing teacher, was once asked by a student "I don't really like writing. Is that okay?" That question framed the article as a whole. Even great scholars have admitted to having struggled at times with there writing like Peter Elbow and David Bartholomae. The article goes on to explain two types of writers the "inspired" writer and the "real" writer. The "inspired" writer, the writer whose ideas flow onto the page seamlessly without strain but, most of us can't do this. Most of us cannot do this for most of us our writing be driven by "purposefulness, propensity, diligence, and determination" (Allen 29). She also gives two tips for writing papers: first to model other excellent writer's formulas and second, to have your paper revised by someone who is a better writer than you. By using these two tips your writing would be much improved even though it may not comenaturally.
III. Reflection on Lamott & Allen's Writing Both Allen and Lamott's writings tell the reader that the perfect first draft is rarely attained by those of us who were not given the god like ability of having the words flow onto paper in a flawless manner. It was a great relief to hear that other writers even scholars have had and continue to have trouble creating that beautiful first draft. Lammott's writing was very enlightening to me because I like and understand the concept of having a down draft then your up draft and finishing with the dental draft because i can actually see myself doing this in the future. Now that I know the impossibility of creating my best work on my first try I realize the importance of the saying perfect practice makes perfect knowing that even great writers struggle at times but practice made them great. WHAT I THINK
After reading the first 21 pages of the book I now see the the importance of expanding my literacy and the importance it has on my writing and bettering myself in that field. The importance of writing and language is important in all aspects of life. Even though I do no see myself as a writer I know that in whatever field i chose down the road writing will still have a large effect. The importance of bettering my own literacy has become more of a priority and I know that if I shoot for the moon even if I miss I'll land in the stars. Posted 18th January 2013 by Anonymous0

Writing about Writing begins with a introduction explaining the reasoning behind a book of articles written by scholars on writing and rhetoric. Ones literacy can be expanded through reading these articles and become a better writer. The book says that there is no formula for becoming a better writer there are no step by step instructions that you can find on the internet. In order to become a better writer you must learn from the writings of scholars and enhance your own literacy. When writing a research paper it is important to frame your argument. MY OPINION/WHAT I THINK. MY OPINION/WHAT I THINK. In my opinion, these two authors and myself are all on the same page. I agree that being literate can increase your chances of gaining success in life. In today’s society being educated is an ever-increasing necessity. More and more employers are looking for educated people and people who have a hunger for more education. Literacy is an important tool. After reading these two articles, I feel that I will read more and try to absorb information from a variety of sources. As Americans we have some of the most freedoms in the whole world. We need to use these freedoms to our advantages. We should be the most educated and informed people in the world. We have fallen behind other countries in the world. We need to put more importance on education and expanding our minds. We have more resources for the general public than most countries in the world. We need to go above and beyond the standard. Being average is not cool anymore, being excellent is. Striving for excellence should be ourgoal as Americans.

SUMMARY OF “SPONSORS OF LITERACY” BY DEBORAH BRANDT SUMMARY OF “SPONSORS OF LITERACY” BY DEBORAH BRANDT Mrs. Brandt makes it clear that there are many aspects of society that affect how and what we read. She refers to these things as sponsors. Sponsors can be people, ideas, or institutions that help us become literate. People in charge can have a huge impact on what things are allowed to be read. Some institutions unintentionally become sponsors. Sponsors are important because there is a statistical correlation between high literacy achievements and high socioeconomic status. People born in the same area and time period could face different sponsors because of race and social status. Some institutions became sponsors to gain control in political and economical competitions. After World War II, the demand for literacy achievement was escalating toward more analytical and interpretive skills. Individuals began to change their lives, from that of their ancestors, and better themselves. They created opportunities through literature that they wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. People then started to use tools they were learning through their individual sponsors, such as employers, in everyday life. Many people used literacy and these sponsors to their advantage, bettering themselves and those around them. Posted 16th January 2013 by Anonymous3
