In its first meeting since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Governing Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) met Tuesday, April 28, to discuss critical issues facing the nation and indeed, the entire world. It is the first time the Council’s board has met by videoconference, and issues surrounding the global pandemic dominated the agenda. The Board heard how churches, civil and human rights organizations, and institutions that work on behalf of the incarcerated are all adapting to protect themost vulnerable.
NOW IS A TIME TO IMAGINE A BOLD NEW FUTURE The Governing Board of the National Council of Churches, meeting during the Easter season 2020, sends greetings to all with the eternal message, “Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!” ONE IN SPIRIT, ONE IN MIND, ONE IN HEART The National Council of Churches is blessed to have friends and colleagues from many religious traditions. These friendships are part of our lives at all levels of the organization, from denominational and congregational leadership to faculty and community partnerships. Among these relationships, the NCC is grateful to have the friendship of interfaith dialogue partners. The NCC has national dialogues with the Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh communities. In these dialogues, we learn about each other’s faiths, discuss issues that affect our communities, and strive to build the kinds of relationships where we can talk with, and even on behalf of, each other in moments of crisis or distress. US MUST NOT SUSPEND FUNDING TO WHO In the midst of a global pandemic with a massive impact on the health and well-being of people throughout the world, President Trump proposes to suspend U.S. funding to the World Health Organization (WHO). This is dangerous, immoral and wrong. Even though international institutions such as the WHO are not perfect, suspension of funding, proposed for 60-90 days while a review takes place, is irresponsibleand ill-timed.
USE OF RSV/NRSV FOR CHURCH SERVICES During this time of National Emergency due to the COVID-19 virus, the National Council of Churches (which owns the rights to both the RSV and NRSV) has temporarily revised our permissions policy. Churches that livestream or broadcast their church sermons during the National Emergency declared for COVID-19 may use the RSV/NRSV without any special permission requirements.WITH HEAVY HEARTS
O, God, we are in the midst of a crisis like none we have seen before. The death toll is rising. We are losing loved ones, colleagues and friends. Death seems to be all around us and there’s not much we can do. Reports of the suffering of those with the novel coronavirus and their families is overwhelming. Our lives and livelihoods are hanging in the balance. At moments, fear and anxiety get the best of us. We need You, O God, this very hour! FRIDAY, THIRD WEEK OF EASTER As we enter the third week of Easter, we may see an ease in stay-at-home restrictions and a re-opening of businesses, but we do not know what this means for returning to our places of worship. In this season of uncertainty, let us hold fast to what we know to betrue in Christ. May
