WHICH RIVERS ARE POLLUTING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF? Coral bleaching and reef recovery. Scientists have found coral recovery rates across the Great Barrier Reef are declining. During the 18-year (1992 -2010) study period, the ability of coral reefs to bounce back from disturbances, such as bleaching, Crown-of-Thorns Starfish outbreaks or cyclones has declined, on average, by six-fold.EXPLORING GAYINI
In 2013, as part of the implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, the New South Wales and Australian Governments purchased 19 separate properties and their water extraction rights in the Lower Murrumbidgee Valley. The conglomerated super property became known as Nimmie-Caira (now referred to as Gayini – the Nari Nari word forwater).
ABOUT VICTORIAN SCALYFINS A Victorian Scalyfin is often seen on our underwater live Reef Cam. They're very territorial fish and can be seen driving away other fish away and even striking at scuba divers who dare to come near their home. Here's some interesting facts about them. Scientific name: Parma victoriae. Parma is Latin for “a small shield carried by the FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE Fighting fire with fire. Fire Down Under An aboriginal ranger starts an early dry season controlled burn on the Arnhem Land of Australia's Northern Territory. This fire was set during the early part of the dry season so it would burn cooler, emit less carbon, then a similar fire during the late dry season would produce. REBUILDING AUSTRALIA’S LOST SHELLFISH REEFS Shellfish reefs are Australia’s most critically endangered marine ecosystem. Made up of billions of oysters and mussels, they once thrived in Australia’s bays and estuaries from Noosa in Queensland right around Australia’s southern coastline to Perth in Western Australia. Now less than 10% remain.ANITA NEDOSYKO
