ROYAL & DOMINION NAVY CASUALTIES by Don Kindell, US Researcher, compiled from original Admiralty Documents, introduced by Capt Christopher Page RN, previously Head of Naval Historical Branch (MOD) pre-World War 1. World War 1, 1914-1918. Inter-War, 1918-1939. HMS NEWCASTLE, BRITISH LIGHT CRUISER, WW2 SOUTHAMPTON-Class cruiser ordered from Vickers Armstrong of Newcastle on Tyne on 1st June 1934 and first of Class to be laid down on 4th October that year. Intended to be named MINOTAUR this name was changed before launch on 23rd January 1936 as the seventh Royal Navy ship to bear the new name. Build was completed on 5th March 1937. Following a successful WARSHIP WEEK campaign in MarchFAMILY HISTORY
Some of those who served: Horace Carswell DSM, MM, BEM, Chief Steward, and Russian Convoy PQ.17. Sidney Kerslake RNR, Leading Seaman, 1920-99, Norway and Russian Convoys. Edward Palmer BEM, Coxswain, attack on HMS Foyle Bank July 1940. Harold Siddall, Stoker , 1916-97, from Scapa Flow to Crete, and on to a German Stalag.BATTLE OF ATLANTIC

ROYAL NAVY SHIPS OF WORLD WAR 1, BASED ON BRITISH WARSHIPS Introduction. "BRITISH WARSHIPS, 1914-1919", published by Ian Allan, 1972, is the only available listing of most of the vessels that served in the Royal Navy during the Great War and into 1919. Unfortunately the book is out of print, but perhaps more importantly it lacks an index, which makes finding all but the best-known of ships, difficult. RANKS, BADGES AND PAY IN THE ROYAL NAVY IN WORLD WAR 2 The Royal Navy in World War 2 was a huge and complex organisation spread all across the world. It is therefore not surprising that the Navy's rank, profession, trade, pay and related badges structures were complex, and even today defy any claim to really understand them in full. Using some of the contents of the Royal Navy's "Appendix to the ROYAL NAVY CASUALTIES, KILLED AND DIED, MAY 1941 Notes: (1) Casualty information in order - Surname, First name, Initial(s), Rank and part of the Service other than RN (RNR, RNVR, RFR etc), Service Number (ratings only, also if Dominion or Indian Navies), (on the books of another ship/shore establishment, O/P – onpassage), Fate

ROYAL NAVY ORGANISATION AND SHIP DEPLOYMENT, INTER-WAR In the background but not directly impacting on the deployment of the Royal Navy were the main issues which influenced politicians, naval leaders, and historians - the various naval treaties and their impact on ship numbers and design; the economic and industrial constraints on building programmes; and dispute with the Royal Air Force over the command of aircraft in maritime operations. ROYAL NAVY RANKS AND BADGES, WORLD WAR 1 Warrant Officers . Most Royal Navy and Royal Marine ranks are straightforward - Boy to Chief Petty Officer, Midshipman to Admiral of the Fleet, but in the middle are the sometimes puzzling Warrant Officers, a rank that was only discontinued in 2010. IN MEMORIAM
Gordon Smith, creator of Naval-History.Net, died peacefully on 16 December 2016 aged 75. Gordon started the site in 1998, initially with books he had written on the Royal and Dominion Navies of World War 2. Over the following 18 years, Gordon massively expanded the site to include a wide range of naval history research. This allowed often hard-to-find and difficult-to-interpret contemporary accounts to be made readily available. The website was central to Gordon's life. Through it he was able to pursue his most important goal: to memorialize the brave sailors who served. Gordon will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Donations to Gordon's favourite charity can be made HEREusing
a credit or debit card. The site also supplies a phone number and address for donations.
