TRACING YOUR MINING FAMILY List of students at the Royal School of Mines for 1851-1920, 1947, 1958 and 1960 Coal Magazine was produced from 1947 by the NCB and continued as Coal News. The privatised industry produced RJB Mining and UK Coal News. The earlier volumes have a lot of THE HISTORY OF PIT PONIES And yet, for many years, that’s exactly where lots of ponies lived, working alongside miners to help collect coal. Mostly used in coalmines in the 1800s to mid-1900s, pit ponies did a variety of jobs, both on the surface and underground. The ponies that worked aboveground typically measured 1.7 metres (16 hands), and you’dusually expect to

PRIMARY SCHOOLS
The Museum offers inspiring hands-on learning activities for KS1 and KS2 pupils. As well as booking an Underground Experience, you can choose one of our workshops, which explore rocks and fossils, local history, children working underground and mining inventions. TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Tools of the Trade. This part of the collection covers a whole range of objects, from small gas detectors to large industrial machines, which were used both above and below ground in the coal mining industry. The collection is particularly strong in twentieth century coal cutting machines, rescue equipment, surveying equipment andminers’ lamps.
