An increasing awareness and concern about the environment, changes in government policy, America’s re-entry into the Paris Agreement and a robust demand for carbon offsets all point toward an appetite for a different type of agricultural crop — carbon. But many questions on the efficacy of carbon farming and its worth to the farmer are as yet unanswered, says Texas A&M AgriLife HOW TO CALIBRATE A GRAIN DRILL The chart below helps you to calibrate the drill. This is especially important if the soil pH is very low. For example, if a new alfalfa seeding is planned, liming should be considered the year before seeding or at least the fall before seeding. 3. Consider the soil conditions. COULD CLOVER BE ‘HOLY GRAIL’ OF ARABLE FARMING? Growing a living mulch under cash crops could eliminate the need for artificial fertilizers, cut costs and boost farm productivity. At least that’s the principle behind ongoing trials of the technique, says The Scottish Farmer magazine. It utilizes the ability of clover to fix nitrogen out of the atmosphere and enrich the soil without the need for application of manufactured nitrates. The objectives of the NWCVT are to evaluate the performance of released and experimental varieties, determine where these varieties are best adapted, and increase the visibility of winter canola across the U.S. 9 QUESTIONS TO ASK TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF WHEAT YELLOWING Source: Kansas State University Extension By late March, wheat should be uniformly green. If there is yellowing in the field, determining the cause of the problem can be important. Some causes require a solution, such as applying more nitrogen (N), some are temporary and do not require any corrective actions, and some causes are beyond thecontrol of growers.
WHY’S MY ALFALFA FIELD TURNING WHITE? In the past, we have observed significant stunting of alfalfa when the alfalfa weevil larvae feed on the remaining stubble. The alfalfa weevil larvae cause the majority of the defoliation and will feed onthe terminal buds.
PRE-EMERGENCE HERBICIDE OPTIONS FOR GRAIN SORGHUM Atrazine is the most widely used triazine herbicide. It is a common component of many pre-plant and pre-emergence herbicide premixes for sorghum. It controls a wide variety of broadleaf weeds, including pigweeds, ragweeds, morningglories, and mustards, as well as some grasses. However, atrazine resistance has been reported for many weedspecies.
