books hold kind of a special place in my heart. I wouldn’t be the gardener I am today {or maybe not a gardener at all} if it weren’t for a few gardening books I picked up years ago. Hi Mavis!!
First let me say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone FOR THEIR SUGGESTIONS ONTHE BABY SHOWER
I
hosted last month. It was a great help to me, and I settled on 2 amazingly tasty and easy soups. If fact they went over so well that I was asked for the recipes! I chose to make the COPYCAT PANERA TOMATOSOUP
because I could easily adjust it to be vegetarian. And the CHICKENTACO SOUP
(clearly not vegetarian!!) ha. The mom to be knew my plan to freeze any extras for her, but… it all got eaten. Good problem to have!!! No worries though, I made another batch for her and froze them in small single serving Ziplock bags. Also a tip for everyone – I found ALL MY PRINTED MATERIAL TEMPLATES such as INVITES, THANK YOU CARDS, GAMES AND POSTERS on Esty!! Way easier for me to just print out the amount I needed. The day began calm as planned! Then quickly turned into a mad rush to decorate as a lot of people arrived super early! Which worked out fine, I just had to tell myselfto roll with it!
As you can see the food was hit! Homemade soup and bread… with a big salad with all kinds of toppings to make it your own!!! Sadly I couldn’t get a picture of the food table until after the crowd wentthrough it!
I did however get a picture of the cupcakes……..which were so cute! In the end it was a wonderful shower, the mom to be got some great gifts for the baby (mostly hand made gifts – how great are these folks!!), and the wonderful ladies who attended all won some prizes, and left with a thank you cookie! My sister and I, (with my future nephew!)~Megan in Michigan

BY MAVIS BUTTERFIELD ON MARCH 19, 2020 · 24 COMMENTS I don’t think it’s any big secret around here that my favorite meal is dessert. So when the HH asked me what I wanted for my birthday a few weeks ago and I told him an old fashioned chocolate cream pie, he was up for the task. That husband of mine, I had no idea he was such a good cook. Why he waited 25 years to get busy in the kitchen is beyond me. Just think of all the deliciousness I’ve beenmissing out on.
Yada yada yada… This recipe for chocolate cream pie, was a 10 out of 10 and perfect in EVERY SINGLE way. _Taste wise_ that is. Presentation wise, it was lacking a bit. Why my husband chose to make a PIE in a CAKE pan is beyond me. I don’t even think he knows why he made the pie in the cake pan. But he did. Husbands… They sure do like to keepyou guessing.
All joking aside, this PIE was MAGNIFICENT! Give it a try. You will bepleased.
Have a great day everyone, Keep Calm and Carry On,~Mavis
INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUST: 9 ounces Nabisco chocolate wafers, crushed 5 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted INGREDIENTS FOR THE CHOCOLATE FILLING:6 large egg yolks
2 Tablespoons CLEAR GEL POWDER {cook type} 1/3 cup granulated sugar2 1/2 cups 2% milk
6 Tablespoons unsalted butter 10 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract INGREDIENTS FOR THE WHIPPED CREAM: 16 ounces fresh whipping cream2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extractDIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°F. While the oven is pre-heating, place the chocolate wafer cookies in a food processor or blender and pulse into fine crumbs. Place the crumbs into a bowl and slowly stir in the melted butter and combine. Press the cookie mixture firmly into the bottom and an inch up the sides of a 9in pie dish. Bake for 10-12 minutes then set aside to cool. In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolks and Clear Gel together untilsmooth. Set aside.
In a medium saucepan, add the sugar and milk and whisk together over medium heat to combine. Bring mixture to a simmer, making sure you are whisking frequently. Once the milk mixture is simmering, add about 1/4 cup of the hot milk into the egg yolks to temper the eggs and whisk slowly. Do this a second time before slowly adding the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan and whisk constantly until the mixture begins to thicken, and comes to a gentle boil. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the butter until smooth. The add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Stir until all the chocolate has melted and the mixture is completely smooth. Pour the chocolate filling into the cookie crust and run a spatula over the top so the top is nice and smooth. Place a piece of plastic wrap gently on top of the pudding and refrigerate until filling is set and completely cooled. {Side note: the HH and I got into a BIG discussion over whether or not cover the pie filling. He said NO, he liked the layer of film on the top of homemade pudding and I said YUK, I don’t. And then he asked me to ask YOU what the right thing to do was. Soooo? Curious minds want to know.} To make whipping cream, simply add 16 ounces of fresh whipping cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2 tablespoons of sugar into a mixing bowl {we use our KitchenAid mixer for this} and using the whisk attachment whip on a medium speed until nice and fluffy. Add the whipped cream topping and sprinkle with wafer crumbs or chocolate chips and chill until ready to serve. Yum Yum. Facebook Twitter PinterestPrintFriendly Share

BY MAVIS BUTTERFIELD ON MARCH 18, 2020 · 92 COMMENTS Yesterday morning I noticed I was running low on vinegar {I use it to set the dye when I HAND DYE WOOL}.
And since we were going to be out at the recycling center dropping off a bunch of cardboard, I mentioned to the HH that we should pop by Market Basket since we were out so I could grab a few bottles of vinegar for dyeing wool. Yada yada yada… He suggested I text our elderly neighbors to see if they needed anything from the store since we were going to be there… and so I did.
Although not _totally_ surprising because of everything that’s going on right now, several sections of the store were pretty much empty. Most surprisingly, the meat section. We had gone shopping just a few days ago and things were pretty mellow at the store. Yes, the toilet paper aisle was pretty sparse and the pasta section was looking pretty slim but the rest of the store was in pretty good shape. This time around though… it was a different story. The cheese section was hit pretty hard {although the fancy cheese area was still intact}. The butter and yogurt was fine but the milk and cream section was only at about 40%. Pasta, rice, canned soups, canned BEANS {OH THE BAKED BEANS!!! This is New England, c’mon…} were all hit pretty hard. But oddly enough, there was still plenty of junk food and fizzy waters to choose from. Frozen fruits and vegetables were pretty low, but the dessert section and entree’s were well stocked. Oh, and there wasn’t a sack of sugar or flour in sight {well, unless you wanted almond flour, there were 4 bags of that left}. Nearly all the soap {in any form} was gone and there was only 1 BOX OF OLD LADY PILLS left on the shelf! Luckily though, we were able to get everything but one item on our neighbor’s list {and the vinegar I needed as well}. And gas. Gas is currently $2.04 a gallon in our neck of the woods.Wowza!
So what’s the situation like at your place? Are things flying off the shelves at your grocery stores as well? And how much are you paying for gas these days? Curious minds want to know. Keep Calm and Carry On,~Mavis
