Indigenous people of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape "Orang Hutan" which literally translates as "Person of the Forest". SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY Orangutans are amazing ambassadors for the Sumatran rainforest. All the species that share the rainforest have a part to play in the health of the ecosystem, but orangutans are sometimes referred to as ‘gardeners of the forest’ due to their special role. They eat hundreds of different types of fruit, and spread the seeds throughoutthe
SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY Permaculture is sustainable and self-sufficient farming that works with, and not against, natural ecosystems. The plantation is located on the edge of Sumatra’s Leuser Ecosystem, one of Southeast Asia’s richest expanses of intact tropical rainforest, and one of Asia’s largest carbon sinks. The national park is losing forest cover at a rate of 5,500 hectares a year. SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY SOS – Sumatran Orangutan Society. Our Rainforest Home Appeal is fully funded! We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had for the appeal, and we’re so grateful for the generous contributions of the 2,500 people who've donated. The next step will be to bring in the chainsaws and remove the oil palms currently growing on the land. SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY The ecosystem restoration programme is operated by our partners, the Orangutan Information Centre, with a team of local staff and farmers. The restoration sites are located within the Leuser Ecosystem, a protected area, and are repairing damage to the forest caused by illegal activities – primarily the clearing of forest for oil palmplantations.
SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY Orangutans spend their lives in the trees, and deforestation is the greatest threat to their survival – so protecting and restoring their habitat is absolutely crucial. We are working with frontline partners to protect the last standing forests in Sumatra, and restoredamaged ecosystems.
SOS – SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN SOCIETY Palm oil, an ingredient found in many everyday food and cosmetic products, is contributing to the rapid deforestation in Sumatra. Orangutan habitat in Sumatra and Borneo is being cleared at an alarming rate for conversion to oil palm plantations. On Sumatra there is now more than 4 times as much land cultivated with oil palms as there is orangutan habitat remaining.
