AVOIDABLE BLINDNESS
Orbis, along with our dedicated volunteers and partners, has played a significant role in efforts to decrease worldwide visual impairment. Thanks to this and the hard work of the wider blindness prevention community, the prevalence of visual impairment has dropped from 4.58% in the 1990s to 3.38% today. But, with experts predicting global GLAUCOMA: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT The International Agency for the Prevention Blindness tells us the term ‘glaucoma’ relates to a group of conditions that can be classified in a variety of ways, but all of which are characterized by optic nerve damage and visual field loss.. The human eye is filled with a clear liquid which is produced continuously and then drained away, always keeping the same amount of liquid in the eye. BREAKING NEWS: ORBIS TEAM FIGHTING TRACHOMA ON THE GROUND Thirteen-year-old Asegedech suffered from trachoma for over two years. The pain was excruciating but help came when Tsehay, an Orbis-trained eye care worker, came to her village and put her on a course of sight-saving antibiotics. However, trachoma continues to ruin millions of lives. This picture was taken before the COVID-19 pandemic. CATARACTS: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT A cataract is a clouding of the lens – turning the lens from clear to yellow, brown or even milky white. This blocks the light from passing into the eye. Over time, the cataract blocks more and more light entering the eye - causing vision loss and eventually blindness. The lens is necessary to focus images onto the retina at the back ofthe eye.
