DIY PROJECTS
Our Nerd Home. We are a geeky couple who recently moved into our first non-apartment home. Our Nerd Home chronicles our attempts at mixing our passion for all things geek with DIY home projects. Thanks for stopping by! Kat & Cam. THE BEST CAMPING GEAR FOR GEEKS Because, obviously. Starfleet Academy Spork. Doctor Who Water Bottle. Unfortunately not bigger on the inside. Tauntaun Sleeping Bag. Of course the list would not be complete without this. Not rated for more rugged camping, but fine if QUICK DIY PROJECT: GOLD LEGO MIRROR FRAME We wanted a quick subtle geek DIY project, after the in-your-face nerdiness of our Wampa head. So we made a fast and easy gold LEGO-framed mirror. There are only two steps here. All you need is a few minutes, gold spray paint, LEGO’s (we used 2×4 bricks), glue, and a mirror or photo frame. 1. We didn’t want to waste alginate, so used an insert to make the box a little smaller. We cut a hand-hole, poured an inch of alginate into the box, held one of our hands in there, then poured the rest of the alginate on top. After about ten minutes, your hand will just pull right out. After filling the negative hand mold space with plaster of GEEK HOME: DIY TETRIS SHELVES We had a fairly large empty spot on one of our walls, and weren’t quite sure what to put there so we made some Tetris inspired shelves. We’ve seen quite a few different sets of Tetris shelves online this past year – we even pinned some to our Pinterest and Tumblr pages, promising that we would add them to our DIY geek decor to-do list. . Take the garland and – since it’s all handy dandy filled with wires – press the large/main part of the garland against the Batman shape, then use the little smaller parts of the DIY GEEK DISHES (LOTR, STAR WARS, ZELDA, MORE) Originally we were going to make a few DIY geek dishes, using only geeky maps (you know Middle Earth map, a map of Hyrule, Westeros) but then decided we needed a whole set of geek dishes, since they were so easy and fast to make.DIY LEGO CLOCK
We kind of needed a wall clock for our office, and we wanted it to be DIY, easy, and cheap. The result was this super customizable DIY LEGO clock. First, drill (or cut) a hole in the middle of the LEGO base plate. Use the bolt in the clock kit for the size you’ll need for the hole. Then spray paint the base plate any color you’d like. Let DIY GEEK HOME DECOR: GEEK PILLOWS! We used to make DIY geek pillows with felt and felt glue. You can kind of see one of our old creations (a Batman pillow) in one of the photos of our Legend of Zelda 8-Bit Heart Headboard. We wanted a little more of a modern feel though, so are switching over to paint. For this project you need: Throw pillow cover. Acrylic Paint. DIY MID CENTURY STYLE PET BED A DIY project for dog (and cat) lovers, here’s a VERY easy mid century style pet bed. Which we finished off with Star Trek fabric. Engage. This initially was turning into a DIY fail. After assembling the pet bed frame, we first stained it with a dark walnut Danish oil. Yeah for some reason the wood said no to that, and it came out a GIANT METALLIC DIY D20 We did. So we made our own giant DIY D20 – it only took a few minutes, and cost pretty much nothing. You know how IKEA calls most of their “wood” furniture “ -effect”? Like “Birch Effect” or “Walnut Effect”? Well, we’re calling this “Metal-Effect”, since it’s GEEK HOME: DIY TETRIS SHELVES We had a fairly large empty spot on one of our walls, and weren’t quite sure what to put there so we made some Tetris inspired shelves. WE MADE A SUPER EASY DIY DISCO DEATH STAR A DIY Death Star Disco Ball. This project was inspired by a really cool Death Star disco ball art print that we saw going around Pinterest. First off, our version is not REALLY a disco ball, since it’s not mirrored. But this way is far cheaper and easier than using tiny mirrors. We used little square silver sequins, which cost lessthan $4
OUR NEW DIY HEADBOARD! RUSTIC WOOD AND 8-BIT HEARTS October 7, 2013. Our New DIY Headboard! Rustic Wood and 8-Bit Hearts. We are so happy with how this one came out! Cam knew I was wanting a wood DIY headboard, so designed and built this himself (of course adding some geekery for me, with the 8-bit Zelda hearts). It is mounted directly to our wall (screwed into studs). DIY GEEK WELCOME MATS, TWO WAYS (STAR TREK, ZELDA) It seemed HUGE for our small porch, so we cut it in half, which makes it about the size of a standard smaller door mat. Here’s a little collage of the process to make the Star Trek mat. Step 1: We printed out a Star Trek emblem. We wanted it big, so printed it across two sheets of paper. Step 2: We traced the image onto clear contact paperOUR NERD HOME
