VINTAGE GIBSON PAF HUMBUCKER ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUPS Over the years the acronym, P.A.F., has come to indicate the features, construction and tone of the guitar pickups with these Patent Applied For decals made by Gibson between 1956 and 1961. Original Patent drawing from 1955. Original PAF prototype pickup made by Seth Lover. To prove the original concept Seth Lover constructed prototype PAF PAF ALNICO GUITAR PICKUP MAGNETS Alnico is a magnetic alloy consisting of Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt. Through the P.A.F. era Gibson used different formulations of Alnico that are identified as Alnico 2, 3, 4 and 5. Through the P.A.F. era each of these grades were used with A3 being the least commonly used in a P.A.F.. Differences in magnetic strength, coercive force VINTAGE PAF ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUP COVERS Choice comes down to cosmetics and tonal differences. Leaving the P.A.F. cover on an unpotted P.A.F. cover does give a slight metallic overtone and "cluck" that many associate with the tone of a P.A.F.. VINTAGE GIBSON PAF HUMBUCKER ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUPS Over the years the acronym, P.A.F., has come to indicate the features, construction and tone of the guitar pickups with these Patent Applied For decals made by Gibson between 1956 and 1961. Original Patent drawing from 1955. Original PAF prototype pickup made by Seth Lover. To prove the original concept Seth Lover constructed prototype PAF PAF ALNICO GUITAR PICKUP MAGNETS Alnico is a magnetic alloy consisting of Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt. Through the P.A.F. era Gibson used different formulations of Alnico that are identified as Alnico 2, 3, 4 and 5. Through the P.A.F. era each of these grades were used with A3 being the least commonly used in a P.A.F.. Differences in magnetic strength, coercive force VINTAGE PAF ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUP COVERS Choice comes down to cosmetics and tonal differences. Leaving the P.A.F. cover on an unpotted P.A.F. cover does give a slight metallic overtone and "cluck" that many associate with the tone of a P.A.F.. PAF HUMBUCKING GUITAR PICKUP SCREWS SLUGS AND KEEPER BAR P.A.F. keeper bar and maple spacer. The keeper bar of a vintage PAF pickup consists of a .125" x .1875" steel bar cut to length and drilled to allow the PAF pole screws and brass bobbin mounting screws to pass through it. The keeper bar derives its name as the "keeper" of the magnetic charge of the Alnico magnet in the magnetic circuit. PAF PICKUPS 42 AWG PLAIN ENAMEL MAGNET WIRE The relevant tonal factors with 42 AWG plain enamel magnet wire are the same today as they were in the 1950's and it comes down to wire diameter and ohms per foot within the 42 AWG tolerance. Differences an these specifications affect the size of a coil and resistance of a PAF guitar pickup for a given number of turns and tonally this matters. VINTAGE GIBSON PAF HUMBUCKER PICKUP BASEPLATE DETAILS The PAF baseplate serves as the foundation of the PAF humbucker pickup assembly. All components of the PAF pickup are mounted to the baseplate. The baseplate also serves as the ground point for the coils braided wire shield and ultimately is essential for shielding the entire PAF pickup by serving as the solder anchor for the PAF pickupcover.
VINTAGE METEOR ME-301 PAF HUMBUCKER PICKUP WINDER ME-301 Tonal Summary: Due to the combination of low tension, 35% lower than optimal turn per layer and very accurate traverse, comparable to a lobed cam, the ME-301 produces accurately wound coils with little scatter that are fuller than a coil wound on the Leesona 102. The answer is no. No Gibson pickup from the 1950's and 1960's were ever wax potted at the Kalamazoo factory. Wax potting is a process now commonly used to eliminate feedback through a humbucker pickup. But does this process have an affect on the tone and feel of a vintage PAF pickup and vintage P.A.F. pickup reproductions? And is the lack of VINTAGE GIBSON KZ/LP-115 PAF ELECTRIC GUITAR PICKUP WINDER Although the turn per layer gearing is optimal for 42awg wire, (virtually the same as Leesona 102 TPL), this center focused coil is a much fatter coil for fewer turns of wire compared to the Leesona 102 PAF coils.
