ADVANCED CANCER
Pancreatic cancer is advanced when it is unresectable, or can’t be removed by surgery. The cancer has spread to nearby blood vessels or lymph nodes, somewhat outside the pancreas or to distant organs (metastasis). This is usually stage III or IV. Staging is the process doctors use to describe the cancer’s size and if it has spread. COVID-19 VACCINE FAQ FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS The goal of the COVID-19 vaccine is to protect the recipient from infection with the coronavirus. Clinical trial results showed that after complete vaccination (two injections for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, one for Johnson & Johnson), there was a significant decrease in risk of infection in vaccinated volunteers.DIET AND NUTRITION
Nutrition Management Presentation. This presentation discusses common nutritional challenges associated with pancreatic cancer and treatment, including tips for eating and getting the best results from pancreatic enzymes. It also addresses nutrition recommendations after surgery and for long-term survivors. View the presentation. GENETICS AND HEREDITARY FACTORS OF PANCREATIC CANCER About 10% of pancreatic cancers are hereditary. This means that for every 10 people with pancreatic cancer, one likely has an inherited mutation that increased their risk for developing the disease. Mutations that happen during a person’s lifetime, rather than inherited mutations, cause most pancreatic cancers. CONTROLLING WEIGHT LOSS The following tips may assist in controlling weight loss: Consult with a registered dietitian for nutrition counseling. Get plenty of rest. This is called adjuvant therapy. Prior to Gemzar®, 5-FU was used as the standard treatment for unresectable pancreatic cancer. Both of these drugs are still usedtoday.
