Shellac should be sprayed in a warm atmosphere and each coat takes only a few minutes to dry. In an hour a piece can be ready for delivery. I use an Earlex 5500 HVLP sprayer. It’s one of the least expensive but for my level of production it works perfectly. MY MINIMALIST TOOL LIST In providing this list I prefer providing a minimalist beginners start up set of tools. As such, I introduce the tools one by one to cover them properly. These are the tools I suggest. Some of them, the spokeshave, the plane, the scrapers and the saws, all demandsharpness.

CLAMPS - PAUL SELLERS' BLOG Alluminium clamps – Retrofit makes a perfect clamp. This post is for Matthew who asked me about the red sash clamps I use in my workshop. He saw them on the videos and in my book. This was my reply: Matthew, You can buy the 24″-48″ sash clamps in this style CHOOSING, SETTING UP AND USING A BANDSAW Choosing your bandsaw In times past, a decade or two before I apprenticed in the 1960s, the only bandsaws really available in the UK at any rate were those developed for industry. In some countries bandsaws are still the rarity and scarcity, not the norm at all. We shouldn’t assume that all peoples have accessON VISES PART I
Those who follow my blog will note that I have tried different things and recently I installed a couple of vises in two new bench builds made from reclaimed materials. A vise I recently settled on as a decent workbench vise is the Eclipse 9” bench vise made by or for Spear and Jackson UK. I bought mine via the Amazon jungle and had itON VISES—PART III
Relocate the liner and close the front jaw onto it. Now measure the distance between the benchtop front edge and the back face of the rear jaw liner. In my case it was a dead 1/2″. Cut two long grain strips 1/2″ (or to suit your vise jaw) by 1″ wide to slide between the jaw liner and the benchtop.VISE TOE-IN OUT
Vise Toe-in Out. Quick release and cast-metal woodworking vises are not all created equal. Some are intentionally made low grade, others high. Some are intentionally engineered with something we call toe-in, meaning the top edge of the front vise jaw touches and aligns with the rear vise jaw but the lower area has a 3mm or so gap.BANDSAW BLADE DULL?
It happens from time to time. A blade seems suddenly to dull and then the drift. You should have ordered more in but you procrastinated and when you need a reasonably sharp blade you’re out. Bandsaw blades have hardened teeth and cannot be sharpened with a file like a conventional saw any more. That’s the EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING 1 day ago · Taking wood from the tree before going to the timber suppliers is called conversion. Conversion is the specific process of cutting the tree stem down its length in different ways to produce beams, boards and sections of wood before the drying and seasoning process begins. After conversion, the wood goes through a period ofseasoning
THE HOUSE MOVE
The walls came down in part but the major one is the wall to the right which undergirds the whole of the back wall of the house. This opening space prepares me to think about the dining, kitchen, living room furniture I will need.PREPPING WOOD VII
The cambered iron looks like this when installed. The purpose in scrubbing off surfaces is two-fold: One, the rough-sawn surface of much bandsawn millwork can be very coarse with deep undulations resembling a ploughed field, and, two, getting down an eighth-of-an-inch or so even across a wider width goes quickly with the heavy scrub action this plane gives you.RASPS AND FILES
Paul has written a few posts on the rasps he uses at the moment. The Auriou Cabinetmaker’s rasp in the second article is a no 10, and he also uses a smaller no 13 for refining work. We have been using the fine Tome Feteira cabinetmaker’s rasp which has been performing great for the price. A rougher rasp would be useful for roughing outshapes.
GENT'S SAWS
Gent’s saws are basically smaller back saws that generally range from around 3″ on up to 10″. I’m writing this blog to simply say no woodworker should be without one. The 10″ is my favourite size and what cuts a lot cuts a little so I have little use for the smallerversions. All of

As such, I introduce the tools one by one to cover them properly. These are the tools I suggest. Some of them, the spokeshave, the plane, the scrapers and the saws, all demand sharpness. They also demand setting up and continued adjustment, setting changes
A GOOD DOVETAIL SAW
The Veritas dovetail saws I have shared my feelings about smaller saws (or any saw for that matter) and how you must master the skills of sharpening or buy throwaways, and for me throwaway is bad, bad form. Saws are not tooth brushes or paper plates and solo cups. They shouldnot go
WHICH PLANE-BEVEL-UP FIRST OR BEVEL-DOWN? Bevel-up bench-type planes cannot and will never replace the infinite versatility of a #4 Bailey-pattern bench plane and a Bailey-pattern #4 bench smoothing plane is the very best and simplest of all bench planes for any new woodworker. It’s the number one first plane over any other on the market bar none. That’s my opinion but not minealone.
SAWS, COSTLY OR INEXPENSIVE Saws often grab my attention for good, bad and indifferent reasons. I love the symmetry of saws. I love sharpening them even though I have sharpened them thousands of times and I love the thought that a saw, like the ones I own from the 1700’s, 1800’s and 1900’s, continue day in and day out to provide my daily at-the-bench sawing needs.PAUL SELLERS
