Peak Oil News and Message Boards Welcome to PeakOil.com, an online community exploring oil depletion. CRASHING OIL DEMAND DRIVES A 17 MMBPD GLOBAL OUTPUT CUT IN Q2 Consulting firm IHS Markit expects oil demand in the second quarter of 2020 to be 22 MMbpd less than a year ago. This collapse in demand combined with low oil prices, storage constraints and government ordered cuts are driving what is an extraordinary level of liquids production cuts and shut-ins around the world. “The Great Shut-In, a rapid and brutal adjustment of global oil supply to a lower level of demand is underway. All producing countries are subject to the same brutal market forces. Some will be impacted more than others. But there is nowhere to hide,” said Jim Burkhard, vice president and head of oil markets at IHS Markit. North America and OPEC members, as well as countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States—particularly Russia—are expected to be the source of most of the production cuts. Exactly where, why and how supply cuts ... “BIBLICAL” WAVE OF BANKRUPTCIES IS ABOUT TO FLOOD THE US One of the silver linings of the coronacrisis to date is that despite the unprecedented collapse in the broader economy and the 30 or so million unemployed, the pace of bankruptcy filings has been relatively steady compared to the pre-covid levels, as the following Goldman chart shows. Unfortunately the relative calm is not meant to last, because as we observed last month, Moody's recently expanded its "B3 Negative and lower list" which soared to its highest tally ever — 311 companies. That tops a former peak of 291 companies, reached during the credit crisis of 2009 and the commodity-related downturn in April 2016. At 20.7% of the total rated spec-grade population, the list also shot up above its long-term average of 14.8%, and closing in on its all-time high of 26.1%. This spike is the result of theconfluence of a ...
IS TRUMP KICKING THE SAUDIS TO THE CURB THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING NOTTERRIBLE?
More than anything else in Saudi Arabia, that thing you smell is fear. Everything is coming unglued for the royal family there all at once. If we all weren’t so distracted by the Coronapocalypse these things would all be front page news. In the past week there have been three major stories concerning Saudi Arabia, none of the bullish. First, there was the news that UAE-backed forces in Yemen broke with the Saudis-led coalition there to declare the Southern Transitional Council the new administrators over southern Yemen which includes the capital and major port at Aden. This led to major clashes over the next week between forces which less than two weeks ago were supposedly on the same side. In addition, Saudi mercenaries were routed in Northern Yemen. The UAE pulled its troops out of Yemen ending its fight with the Houthis after the ... VISUALIZING AMERICA’S ENERGY USE, IN ONE GIANT CHART Have you ever wondered where the country’s energy comes from, and how exactly it gets used? Well now, thanks to Visual Capitalist's Jeff Desjardins, we have the answer as The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) crunches the numbers every year, outputting an incredible flow diagram that covers the broad spectrum of U.S. energy use. The 2019 version of this comprehensive diagram gives us an in-depth picture of the U.S. energy ecosystem, showing not only where energy originates by fuel source (i.e. wind, oil, natural gas, etc.) but also how it’s ultimately consumed by sector. In Perspective: 2019 Energy Use Below, we’ll use the unit of quads, with each quad worth 1 quadrillion BTUs, to compare data for the last five years of energy use in the United States. Each quad has roughly the same amount of energy as contained in 185 million barrels of ... POPULATION BOOM, OR POPULATION BUST? We all know the world population is set to hit 9 billion by 2050. Or is it? Darrell Bricker says it’s not going to happen, and we should prepare to have fewer mouths to feed — not more. It’s common knowledge that the world population is rapidly expanding, set to hit the 9 billion mark by 2050 and keep growing from there. It’s inevitable that we will face major challenges as we run out of arable land and face food and water shortages as humans vie for the natural resources we all depend on to survive. The problem is, Darrell Bricker says, that the above scenario isn’t going to pan out. “Everyone’s always talking about the population problem and how it’s out of control, that we’re having too many babies. That human encroachment will totally destroy our natural habitat. It’s nottrue,” says ...
ARC OF PEAK OIL: FROM EMPTY WELLS TO DEMAND DESTRUCTION The world once debated whether oil wells would run dry. Now, with crude flooding the market, the debate has turned to whether oil companies can sell enough of it. If peak oil is a relic, the question now is if we've hit peak oil demand. The debate, like nearly everything these days, is stoked by the novel coronavirus. Demand has plummeted with much of the world on lockdown. Roughly a third of global oil consumption evaporated in April. The International Energy Agency estimates the world will use 9.3 million fewer barrels a day in 2020 than it did in 2017. That would bring consumption back to 2012 levels. Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, told financial analysts last week that the recent demand destruction has been so great that "we don't even know that will come back." Oil demandwill ...
RESPONDING TO COLLAPSE, PART 16: SHORTAGES OF MONEY A few posts back I said that shortages of electrical power, diesel fuel and money will be at the heart of the troubles that lie ahead for small remote communities as collapse progresses. I am interested in that sort of community because that is where I am recommending that you take refuge in order to ride out collapse (and where I have already taken refuge). I've covered electrical power in parts 10 to 14 of this series and diesel fuel in part 15, so that leaves money for this post and the next one. We'll be looking at shortages of money from two angles here. First, in this post, shortages that occur when you have money on deposit at the bank, or credit prearranged with the bank, but can't access it due to problems with the banking system.Second, in the ...
THE GLOBAL FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN IS PASSING A SEVERE TEST IF YOU LIVE in the rich world and want an example of trade and global co-operation, look no further than your dinner plate. As the lockdowns began in the West two months ago, many feared that bread, butter and beans would run short, causing a wave of stocking-up. Today, thanks to fleets of delivery lorries filling supermarket shelves, you can binge-eat as you binge-watch. This capitalist miracle reflects not a monolithic plan, but an $8trn global supply chain adapting to a new reality, with millions of firms making spontaneous decisions, from switching rice suppliers in Asia to refitting freezers. The system is far from perfect: as incomes collapse, more people are going hungry. There are risks, from labour shortages to bad harvests. And there is an irony in seeing the industry grapple with a crisis that probably began with the sale ... MILLIONS OF FARM ANIMALS CULLED AS US FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN CHOKES UP Covid-related slaughterhouse shutdowns in the US are leading to fears of meat shortages and price rises, while farmers are being forced to consider “depopulating” their animals. More than 20 slaughterhouses have been forced to close, although some have subsequently reopened. On Tuesday President Trump issued an executive order to keep slaughterhouses open which would, he said, help solve liability problems for meat companies. At least two million animals have already reportedly been culled on farm, and that number is expected to rise. Approved methods for slaughtering poultry include slow suffocation by covering them with foam, or by shutting off the ventilation into the barns.
