HISTORY – A SECRET HISTORY OF AMERICAN RIVER PEOPLE A shantyboat is a small crude houseboat (also called a flatboat, broadhorn, barge, scow, or ark). There is a long forgotten history in America of people living in homemade shantyboats, a reasonable and cost-free solution for displaced people in rural areas and workers inurban areas.

There is a long history of people building and living in shantyboats, the obvious choice for itinerant workers, miners, dockworkers, and displaced agricultural workers. Two years ago, I started creating my own shantyboat, largely from recycled materials. RUNNING THE NEGROS OUT OF TOWN A look at American ethnic cleansing. I knew about the 1921 Tulsa Massacre in the thriving Black business community known then as Black Wall Street during which 75–300 Black people were killed, nearly 1000 were wounded, and 10,000 black people were left homeless.. I’d heard about the 1917 East St. Louis riots in which 40–250 Black people were killed and another 6,000 Black people wereMATH IS HARD
Taking our equation for a spin. Let’s say the total weight of the boat plus gear plus people plus 25% safety margin is 7000 lbs. Then the calculated volume of the boat at the waterline is 193,846 cu in. We’ll say the boat is 8 foot (96 inches) wide, the length is 20 foot (240 inches), and the height from the bottom to the deck is 2 feet (24THE TILLERS

I’ve heard great things from my shantyboat friend Faith about Paul who was the Hubbard’s young friend and is currently the much older caretaker of their Payne Hollow property. A rustic recreated mid-century shantyboat, daring river voyages, a meticulous archive of river stories, and a participatory art installation are all part of a multi-year art and history project, A Secret History of American River People. MEET THE ARTISTS AND THE CREW A Secret History of American River People is the result of the hard work of dozens of artists and crew. From the many friends who helped build and maintain the boat, the artists with whom the project has collaborated, the production team who worked on the project, and the amazing crew who have joined the journeys since 2014. LISTENING TO RIVER PEOPLE A Secret History of American River People is a project to build a collection of personal stories of people who live and work on the river from the deck of a recreated mid-century shantyboat over a series of epic river voyages. The project engages people living in contemporary river communities in di OPEN RIVERS: KNOWING THE MISSISSIPPI In summer 2014, inspired by historical accounts of shantyboaters on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, I set out on a journey to record the would-be lost histories of river communities. In the tradition of Howard Zinn’s People’s History projects, A Secret History of American River People uncovers these hidden stories and brings them tolife.
FURGARY BOAT CLUB & SHANTYTOWN The Furgary or Fugary Boat Club is also sometimes called the North Dock Tin Boat Association, Shantytown or just The Shacks. It’s a collection of seventeen small shacks—some of which likely date back to the late 1800s—right at the mouth of Hudson’s North Bay, where it meets the Hudson River. They are a long stone’s throw from the KEEL AND SKEG STRINGERS In the Glen-L Waterlodge, the framing members run longitudinally and are called stringers. So building the boat frame means assembling the individual stringers and then tying them together with various cross beams. There were five stringers total. THE MAGIC OF THE LOCK 11 FISHING BARGE The Magic of the Lock 11 Fishing Barge. After shipsmates Sebastian and Monica and I made a morning run through Lock 11, we headed for the beach below the dam on a whim to chill and make ourselves some breakfast. Pretty quickly, we made the acquaintance of nearby cabin-owners Steve and Chris, and shortly thereafter Ed and TJ. She her husband Dale were our trip angels meeting us at various points downriver and bringing us smuggled Wisconsin beer and regaling us with stories. She told us that when we got to her hometown of Galena Illinois that the GENE DAVIDSON OWNER OF THE CLIFTON MARINA Gene Davidson owner of the Clifton Marina. We talked to Gene Davidson who owns the Clifton Marina. He’s lived either in Clifton or nearby Waynesboro all of his 80 years. A pharmacist for most of his career, Gene created the marina in the early 2000s after he retired. Gene and I talked about his childhood and how rough Clifton was back in theday.

I knew this story and even interviewed Dakota and Cherokee people whose forebears were forcibly removed and who had since quietly returned to their homeland. But coming from the West, this is always still a surprise. SAM HOUSTON AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF HIWASSEE ISLAND Born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee as a boy with his widowed mother, Sam Houston grew up in Maryville, 20 miles south of Knoxville, and was a troubled kid, single-parent home, drinking at age 13, in jail at 14, etc. He ran away from home and lived with an eccentric Cherokee tribe of about 200 on Hiwassee Island. The Shantyboat. by Wes Modes on June 2, 2014. A shantyboat is a small crude houseboat. There is a long history of people building and living in shantyboats, the obvious choice for itinerant workers, miners, dockworkers, and displaced agricultural workers. Two years ago, I started creating my own shantyboat, largely from recycled materials. By and by, I’ll be coming up on Payne Hollow, the holler where Anna and Harlan Hubbard settled out after 5 years spent floating their shantyboat down the Ohio and the Mississippi Rivers in the 1950s.. I’ve heard great things from my shantyboat friend Faith about Paul who was the Hubbard’s young friend and is currently the much older caretaker of their Payne Hollow property. FURGARY BOAT CLUB & SHANTYTOWN The Furgary or Fugary Boat Club is also sometimes called the North Dock Tin Boat Association, Shantytown or just The Shacks. It’s a collection of seventeen small shacks—some of which likely date back to the late 1800s—right at the mouth of Hudson’s North Bay, where it meets the Hudson River. They are a long stone’s throw from the SALTILLO’S GHOST MARINA Not sure this marina in Saltillo is going to have wi-fi. Saltillo'sghost marina.

MATH IS HARD
Taking our equation for a spin. Let’s say the total weight of the boat plus gear plus people plus 25% safety margin is 7000 lbs. Then the calculated volume of the boat at the waterline is 193,846 cu in. We’ll say the boat is 8 foot (96 inches) wide, the length is 20 foot (240 inches), and the height from the bottom to the deck is 2 feet (24 SEARCHING FOR LIVING NATIVE HISTORY IN THE OHIO RIVER Digging deeper, all of the native tribes along the Ohio River were displaced during the Indian Removals from 1830 to 1842. I knew this story and even interviewed Dakota and Cherokee people whose forebears were forcibly removed and who had since quietly returned to their homeland. But coming from the West, this is always still a surprise. SAM HOUSTON AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF HIWASSEE ISLAND Born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee as a boy with his widowed mother, Sam Houston grew up in Maryville, 20 miles south of Knoxville, and was a troubled kid, single-parent home, drinking at age 13, in jail at 14, etc. He ran away from home and lived with an eccentric Cherokee tribe of about 200 on Hiwassee Island. FLATBOATMEN OF THE FRONTIER 1941 OHIO RIVER VALLEY Enjoy this charming (and educational) 1941 documentary covers the process of producing wooden flatboats for use on the Ohio River, watercraft which have plied those waters since European’s firstcolonized the area.
