PERCEPTION
Perception Institute inspires people to live their values. Our brains like to be right, our hearts strive to be good. The very experience of racial difference, however, can send these basic human impulses atwitter. Unless disrupted, stereotypes embedded in our brains can turn into implicit bias and lead to discrimination over time. REPRESENTATION: CULTURE & PERCEPTION THE "GOOD HAIR" STUDY In 2016, Perception Institute conducted the “Good Hair” Study, the first study to examine implicit and explicit attitudes related to black women’s hair. In conjunction with a creative team at SheaMoisture, manufactured by Sundial Brands, Perception Institute created the first “ Hair IAT ” to assess implicit bias related tonatural hair.
EXPLICIT BIAS EXPLAINED What it is: “Explicit bias” refers to the attitudes and beliefs we have about a person or group on a conscious level. Much of the time, these biases and their expression arise as the direct result of a perceived threat. In the United States, “Good Hair” is considered to be hair that is wavy or straight in texture, soft to the touch, has the ability to grow long, and requires minimal intervention by way of treatments or products to be considered beautiful. In conjunction with a creative team at SheaMoisture, manufactured by Sundial Brands, Perception Institute created the first “ Hair IAT ” to assess implicit bias related tonatural hair.
