NEW GENERATION ANCHORS: EXPLAINED AND COMPARED A number of new generation anchors have in recent years and decades distinguished themselves from the traditional types of days gone by. Omitting knock-offs, the Delta (late 1980s) is the last of the old generation – although a modern anchor, it is still a plow and therefore effectively just an improved CQR. OLD GENERATION ANCHORS: WHAT’S REALLY THE PROBLEM? Performance of the CQR and plows in the 21 st century. It cannot be denied that the CQR gifted to boaters a large improvement over the antiquated alternatives available in the early 20 th century; it was the world’s first “small boat anchor”, an asymmetrical design with all the associated efficiencies of performance. In the 50 years following its beginnings, it enjoyed a near monopoly on INDEPENDENT ANCHOR PERFORMANCE TESTING Scotsman Professor John Knox has a history of anchor testing, write-ups of which have appeared in Practical Boat Owner before. Introducing this article, he describes his experience tenuously anchored to a CQR in the Inner Hebrides during a storm in 1988, and how this led to the testing of anchor types in order to best appraiseperformance.

About Kiwi Roa A profile of Peter’s custom-built yacht “Kiwi Roa” mid-Atlantic, with twin poled headsails above the original red TBS anti-skid. Custom-designed and built by himself over a four year period in England, Kiwi Roa is the result of Peter’s lifelong experience both racing and long distance cruising, not to mention professional boat-building. Kellets, also known as anchor angels, sentinels, or buddies, are frequently hailed as a way in which to increase the holding power of your anchor, reduce dragging incidents, and complement the rest of your ground tackle. TWO TO TANDEM: MAXIMIZING HOLDING POWER BY TANDEM ANCHORING An outline of the theoretical & practical aspects of tandem anchoring. The concept of tandem anchoring is very popular amongst the boating community. On internet message boards, the topic seems to be raised nearly as often as discussions on anchors themselves.
