Sister Cities park, reopened this May, is a beautiful homage to urban revitalization, combining the charming with the whimsical in a series of landmarks signifying Philadelphia’s ten sister cities: a cafe, a boat pond, and other small wonders that draw people to Ben Franklin Parkway where the park is situated. YES, BAD THINGS DID HAPPEN ON ELECTION DAY. . . IN 1849 Yes, Bad Things Did Happen on Election Day. . . in 1849. “One of the most dreadful and sanguinary riots” Philadelphia had ever seen—and by 1849, Philadelphia had seen more than a few—took place on an election night. The events were so dreadful and so sanguinary, gothic novelist George Lippard adopted them, without embellishment, asfiction.

When school reformers look at Philadelphia’s situation in 2011, they see too many old and inadequate buildings. Half of the Philadelphia School District’s 257 schools were built before World War II. GENTLEMEN AND WISE GUYS IN GIRARD ESTATES Gentilhommiere, the Stephen Girard Mansion at 22nd and Shunk Streets, 1972. Unlike Germantown, where wealthy Philadelphians such as the Chews built grand summer retreats, Passyunk never became a fashionable summer retreat for the city’s elite. The land was flat and marshy. The Schuylkill River snaked lazily southward in the distance.“THE BOULEVARD”
The origins of the Boulevard date back to 1902 when Mayor Samuel H. Ashbridge proposed the construction of a road to connect central Philadelphia to the communities in the northeastern reaches of the city. At this time, most of the Northeast was rural farmland communities connected by a loose network of dirt roads. PHILADELPHIA’S DEADLIEST FIRE Walls of the Hunt, Wilkinson & Company furniture emporium came tumbling down the morning of October 25th, 1901. By lunchtime, firefighters declared the conflagration of the 8-story, 14-year-old building at 1219–1221 Market Street under control. Twenty-two were dead, ranking this as Philadelphia’s deadliest fire. BENJAMIN HENRY LATROBE’S “FIRST GREAT STRUCTURE And so he did, first in Philadelphia in 1798, then in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New Orleans and beyond. By the time Latrobe died of Yellow Fever in 1820, he left a trail of buildings the likes of which had not been seen or imagined on this side of the Atlantic. In 1961, the Boulevard grew again when it was connected to Interstate 76 via an extension called the Roosevelt Expressway. The Roosevelt Expressway runs from its connection with I-76 at the Schuylkill River through North Philadelphia to connect with FOUNDER’S WEEK IN PHILADELPHIA In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the city of Philadelphia hosted several large celebrations. Events such as the 1876 Centennial and the 1898 Peace Jubilee connected Philadelphia residents to the anniversary of the founding of BROAD AND MARKET STREETS: THE INTERSECTION OF PAST AND North Broad Street from City Hall, ca. 1895. (PhillyHistory,org) Philadelphia’s past and future always collided at the intersection of Broad and Market Streets. From the conception of Center Square in the 1680s to the laying of the corner stone for City Hall in 1874 it was a tentative, slow-motion collision. NEIGHBORHOOD MOVIE THEATERS Shawn Evans, AIA, Atkin Olshin Schade Architects. Center City Philadelphia was home to the region’s most well known movie theatres. Clustered in districts on Market, Chestnut, South, and North 8 th Streets, these entertainment venues lined up along the sidewalks with blinking lights and glistening facades to draw in thousands of visitors to downtown.PHILLYHISTORY BLOG

When school reformers look at Philadelphia’s situation in 2011, they see too many old and inadequate buildings. Half of the Philadelphia School District’s 257 schools were built before World War II. GENTLEMEN AND WISE GUYS IN GIRARD ESTATES Gentilhommiere, the Stephen Girard Mansion at 22nd and Shunk Streets, 1972. Unlike Germantown, where wealthy Philadelphians such as the Chews built grand summer retreats, Passyunk never became a fashionable summer retreat for the city’s elite. The land was flat and marshy. The Schuylkill River snaked lazily southward in the distance.THE GIRARD PIERS
One of the last components of the project was the construction of Piers 3 and 5 North in 1922-23. These two new piers were constructed on the site of several aging wooden wharves built in the 19th century with money that had been left to the city by Stephen Girard. PHILADELPHIA’S SEARS TOWER From 1919 to 1920, Sears, Roebuck & Co. constructed a large complex that consisted of a large 9-story building that included a 14-story clock tower. The neo-Gothic brick building was designed by George C. Nimmons, a Chicago-area architect who had worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. previously, even designing the company president’s home.THE GIRARD PIERS

PHILADELPHIA’S DEADLIEST FIRE Walls of the Hunt, Wilkinson & Company furniture emporium came tumbling down the morning of October 25th, 1901. By lunchtime, firefighters declared the conflagration of the 8-story, 14-year-old building at 1219–1221 Market Street under control. Twenty-two were dead, ranking this as Philadelphia’s deadliest fire. NEIGHBORHOOD MOVIE THEATERS The Ogontz Theatre was one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful neighborhood theatres. Located in the West Oak Lane neighborhood, the Ogontz was designed in the Spanish renaissance style by Magaziner, Eberhard, & Harris.
