INGRAHAM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CREATES VOLUNTEER CORONAVIRUS ASSISTANCEORGANIZATION
by Chris Maykut on April 14, 2020 in PhinneyWood Neighborhood Christopher Nguyen, a junior at Ingraham High School, recently created a volunteer organization to help battle the impacts of the pandemic. “WA Helpers ” mission is to manage no-contact volunteering and support requests throughout Seattle. Per an email sent out by Christopher: _“As the coronavirus began accelerating not only in Washington but in other states as well, I decided to support those who want it in King County, starting with Seattle, to minimize their exposure to the disease. Helping out with simple household tasks around the neighborhood such as shopping, picking up prescription medicine, and walking dogs with minimal to nonexistent contact between neighbors can help reduce both the rate of infection and the death toll of COVID-19. It is best that those in high-risk groups stay out of the public, especially if they have a choice. Inspired by Westside Friends LA and being a part of Mutual Aid National Connections, I created the organization “WA Helpers” to manage no-contact volunteering and support requests throughoutSeattle. _
_The way this works is quite simple. Those who need help with any viable task just visit our website to request support, which is sent to me. With my roster of all the volunteers I have in hand, I match a volunteer to the requester, giving them each other’s contact information. From there, they arrange everything themselves such as grocery lists, methods of reimbursement, and time frame. Both the volunteer and the requester are given detailed guidelines to follow before any communication. They are pretty obvious ones like being nice and keeping physical contact to a minimum. This method has been used by the Los Angeles group, and they have successfully fulfilled hundreds of requests around the city._ _Overall, we want to make sure that those of us who are sick, incapacitated, unable to leave the house, or high-risk can still get what they need to survive. I am reaching out to you because this organization is pretty new and we are still expanding this. I think many involved with the senior center would love this service, especially because it does not require those who request to take a step outside. I know you have a huge mailing list, which I think is perfect to spread the word so anyone who wants to get help is able to. Is it possible for you to send an email out to inform the neighborhood of this service? Not only do we welcome anyone who wants to request support, but we would take volunteers as well!_ _Note: For those who do not have access to the internet, our phone number is (509) 540-3137._ _Thank you for helping me bring this service available to everyone in Seattle. Anything you can do to help me accomplish this is greatlyappreciated!”_

ZooTunes has been a Seattle staple for 37 years. While the zoo is sad to cancel this year, they are optimistic that the “collective efforts of our community is helping to flatten the curve and that we’ll be able to rock and roar together in 2021. To those who have already purchased tickets for Blondie – thank you for supporting the zoo! We’re sorry we won’t be holding this concert in August and will be in touch by e-mail soon with nextsteps.
We’re so grateful to you for making ZooTunes part of your summer tradition. With all of the concerts and competition in Seattle, you’ve chosen to come back to us each year for music on the meadow because you care about your zoo and its wonderful animals. This year, more than ever, Woodland Park Zoo needs your support. Since closing our doors in March, the zoo has lost millions of dollars in critical funds. We’ve been heartened by the generosity of our community, who have rallied around their zoo to help us continue our vital animal care work. If you are able to make a financial contribution of any size, please visit www.zoo.org/relief or consider joining or renewing your zoo membership.
We’ll miss you this summer at ZooTunes but look forward to seeing you and celebrating together next summer! Thank you for your continued support of the animals and employees of Woodland Park Zoo.”SUPPORT YOUR ZOO >>
NORTH PRECINCT CAPTAIN REPORTS GREATLY DIMINISHED CRIME RATES by Chris Maykut on April 6, 2020 in PhinneyWood Neighborhood Captain Eric Sano of Seattle Police Department’s North Precinct has reached out with some positive news: calls for service are down almost 5% and our overall North Seattle crime is down 10% in 2020. For the past month during the COVID crisis, numbers are spectacular. Calls for service are down almost 9%, overall crime has been down 34%, burglaries are down 20% and larcenies are down 48%. Per Captain Sano: _“To all North Precinct residents, business owners and workers, this COVID-19 pandemic has really changed the way we all live and interact. We are definitely in unprecedented times and unchartered waters! I understand the fear and apprehension you all are feeling. I get it, I really do._ _But, please know this: the Seattle Police Department continues to patrol our streets and respond to calls as we have always done. While we are encouraging our citizens to utilize CopLogic https://www.seattle.gov/police/need-help/online-reporting or the telephone reporting 206-625-5011 to minimize face-to-face contact, that doesn’t mean we’re not responding to priority calls or other calls for service. We are still getting dispatched to calls all over the North Precinct._ _Still, be vigilant and report suspicious activity. Call 9-1-1 if you truly believe there is a crime about to occur or is occurring. Our Communications Section is still fully staffed and answering all of the calls coming their way!_ _Most importantly, stay home unless you have to go to the doctor, the pharmacy or the store. Take care of one another and know we’re going to get through this.”_ FARM FRESH PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICK UP HERE IN PHINNEY by Chris Maykut on April 5, 2020 in PhinneyWood Neighborhood Burton Hill Farm of Vashon Island, which specializes in pasture-raised animals fed an organic and non-GMO diet, is delivering their products to Phinney during the Covid shutdown. DONATE YOUR N95 MASKS TO HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES by Chris Maykut on April 3, 2020 in PhinneyWood Neighborhood Do you have N95 respirator masks? Donate them to the Seattle Mask Brigade! This volunteer group is collecting masks (and other personal protective equipment) from around the Seattle area and delivering them to hospitals and nursing homes that are running out. You may have purchased N95 masks during the smokey summer a few years ago, or to handle fumes for various projects. Or maybe you have nitrile gloves, hand sanitizer, or surgical masks lying around. Please consider donating them to nurses, doctors, first responders, and health care aids so we can keep them healthy and safe. The need is critical. Even with PPE shipments arriving from the federal government, workers at hospitals, nursing homes, EMS services, and homeless services are having to reuse masks for days or use makeshift masks. You can help them! Seattle Mask Brigade volunteers will pick up supplies from your porch and deliver them to healthcare facilities, usually within a day. In just a few weeks, the Seattle Mask Brigade has collected and distributed over 8,000 masks from more than 500 different donations. Have masks and supplies to donate? Interested in volunteering to help out? Does your workplace need masks? Visit seattlemaskbrigade.org.
