BIPOC SCHOLARSHIP
ABOUT. Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship fund for LGBTQ students in higher education, is proud to announce its new BIPOC scholarship initiative. Generations of racism and an education system born from discriminatory policies have made clear that BIPOC students face greater obstacles to educational achievement. 10 THINGS I LEARNED TRANSFERRING TO CORNELL UNIVERSITY Here are some of the important things I’ve learned: 1. There’s not really any ivy at this Ivy League university. Cornell was built on a big hill in the middle of nowhere—Ithaca, New York. It’s known for a lot of things, like being really cold and far away from everything. BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN NURSING AND ACTIVISM Bridging the Gap Between Nursing and Activism. A radical organizer who I love and respect has a saying that goes something like “you can do direct service without organizing, but you can’t do organizing without direct service.”. As an organizer who is gradually embracing the role of healthcare provider, I find myself reflecting on these GAY, BLACK, AND REVOLUTIONARY: THE IMPORTANCE OF The latest Academy Award for Best Picture was earned by a film depicting the story of a poor, gay, black boy in South Florida. Moonlight, by director Barry Jenkins, has achieved great recognition for its beautiful and honest depiction of a storyline which challenges itself at every turn.Its protagonist, Chiron, grows up in the crude environment of Liberty City, Florida, surrounded by theLOGAN ALCOSIBA
Logan Alcosiba. Learning to live for love instead of to die from hate, Logan Alcosiba came out as transgender once her sophomore year began. When she was greeted with open arms, Logan made it her mission to ensure all kids were treated the same. Somjen Frazer grew up in North Carolina and attended Cornell University as a Presidential Research Scholar, where she led an initiative to improve health care access for women who partner with women. She received her Master’s degree in sociology from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where her dissertation focused on the police implementation of DANNY EGOL | POINT FOUNDATION Danny Egol. Raised in a multi-cultural home with strong ties to both Cuba and Israel, Danny grew up passionate about social justice, community building, and global affairs. Shortly after visiting his Cuban family in Havana for the first time in 2014, changes in family travel policy prevented Danny from accessing his family for eightyears.

ABOUT. Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship fund for LGBTQ students in higher education, is proud to announce its new BIPOC scholarship initiative. Generations of racism and an education system born from discriminatory policies have made clear that BIPOC students face greater obstacles to educational achievement. HISTORY OF THE WORD: TRANSGENDER The many letters of “LGBTQ+” have a complex, often tense relationship: supposedly all under the same umbrella, but still somehow divided. Knowing one’s place and respecting these divisions can often be just as important as solidarity. These tensions often bubble over into the media, such as the now infamous debates (with varied opinions) over slurs 10 THINGS I LEARNED TRANSFERRING TO CORNELL UNIVERSITY Here are some of the important things I’ve learned: 1. There’s not really any ivy at this Ivy League university. Cornell was built on a big hill in the middle of nowhere—Ithaca, New York. It’s known for a lot of things, like being really cold and far away from everything.
