_Gouache from Leben? Oder Theater?: Ein Singspiel (Life or Theater? An Operetta), no. 4351_, (1941-1943) by Charlotte Salomon Artist Charlotte Salomon was born to a cultured, upper-middle-class family in Berlin. Despite antisemitic policies that restricted access to art academies and guilds, in 1935 Salomon attended art school in Berlin. The situation in Germany worsened, and in 1939 Salomon’s parents sent her to France, where she lived with her grandparents. During this time, Salomon created an extensive series of paintings and writings, titled _Life or Theater? An Operetta_, which chronicled the difficult history of her family. Salomon married Alexander Nagler in 1943, and later that year, she and her husband were deported to Auschwitz where both were murdered. Prior to her deportation, Salomon had given her paintings to a French doctor to safeguard throughout the war; her parents later reclaimed them. The paintings are now held at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. Image courtesy of Collection Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam. Charlotte Salomon Foundation. WHAT IS THE POSEN LIBRARY? Is The Posen Library for you? The Posen Library Editor in Chief Deborah Dash Moore chose the music in this video, “I’m Done Dressing Up for You,” written and performed by Alicia Jo Rabins. The piece is about Vashti, the queen of Persia who refuses to appear at the king’s banquet in the Purim story. She is banished, making room for Esther to become queen. JUST PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2020! THE POSEN LIBRARY OF JEWISH CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION, VOLUME 9: CATASTROPHE AND REBIRTH, 1939–1973 _Deborah at Tante Esther’s_ (1947) by Saul Leiter Saul Leiter was an American painter and photographer, one of the first to work in color photography. Born in Pittsburgh, Leiter began studying at a rabbinical school in Cleveland, but soon changed course, moving to New York at age twenty-three to pursue a painting career. In New York, he befriended a number of fellow artists who inspired him to experiment in photography. Leiter worked for fashion magazines including _Harper’s Bazaar_ and _Vogue_, all the while taking personal photographs that transmuted the bustling urban environment of Manhattan into quiet meditations on color and form. His work has recently enjoyed renewed popularity with the publication of a monograph in 2006, as well as an award-winning 2012 documentary. Image © Saul Leiter Foundation.2
EDITED BY SAMUEL D. KASSOW, CHARLES H. NORTHAM PROFESSOR OF HISTORY AT TRINITY COLLEGE, AND DAVID G. ROSKIES, THE SOL AND EVELYN HENKIND CHAIR OF YIDDISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE AND PROFESSOR OF JEWISH LITERATURE AT THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY. VOLUME 9: CATASTROPHE AND REBIRTH covers a period editors Kassow and Roskies call “one of the most tragic and dramatic in Jewish history,” from the eve of World War II through the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War. The volume demonstrates the vitality and diversity of Jewish responses to the Holocaust while it was happening, both within the occupied war zone and throughout the Jewish world. It chronicles the birth of the State of Israel, tracks the expulsion and dispersion of Jews from Arab lands, the end of Eastern European Jewry, and the emergence of American Jewish culture. Organized geographically and then by genre, VOLUME 9: CATASTROPHE AND REBIRTH details Jewish cultural and intellectual accomplishments across: * • LITERATURE (anthologies, life writing, fiction, drama, poetry, popular song, and children’s literature) * • VISUAL AND MATERIAL CULTURE (ritual objects, painting, sculpture, photography, comic books, and architecture) * • INTELLECTUAL CULTURE (cultural, political, and religiousthought; reportage)

_Judahite Pillar Figurine with Mold-Made Head_, Iron Age IIB–IIC, 8th–7th century BCE Terra-cotta pillar figurines are found throughout the biblical territory of Judah and date to the eighth to seventh centuries BCE. Most were decorated with a white background layer and one or more colors (red, yellow, black) for stripes, jewelry, eyes, and hair. They usually have almond-shaped eyes and a hairstyle with tightly twisted curls, similar to representations of Egyptian wigs. This example, from Lachish, 7 inches (18 cm) high, has a stylized curly hairdo. The face seems to present a quirky smile, a long thin nose, and eyes and brow ridges marked by raised lines. 1. Born in Pittsburgh, Leiter began studying at a rabbinical school in Cleveland, but soon changed course, moving to New York at age twenty-three to pursue a painting career. In New York, he befriended a number of fellow artists who inspired him to experiment in photography. Leiter worked for fashion magazines including Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, all the while taking personal photographs that transmuted the bustling urban environment of Manhattan into quiet meditations on color and form. His work has recently enjoyed renewed popularity with the publication of a monograph in 2006, as well as an award-winning 2012 documentary. Terra-cotta pillar figurines are found throughout the biblical territory of Judah and date to the eighth to seventh centuries BCE.
