MEAT CHICKEN (BROILER) INDUSTRY Meat chicken (broiler) industry. Australia’s meat chicken industry, or broiler industry, has a relatively brief history when compared with the other major Australian livestock industries. There are currently more than 800 commercial meat chicken growers in Australia. Most grow chickens under contract to meat processing companies and are known as ‘contract chicken growers’.POULTRY BEHAVIOUR
The hen is a seasonal breeder and is secretive about its nesting site. It lays on a 23 to 26 hour cycle and produces up to 10-15 eggs before incubating them constantly with only one major daily break for feeding and plumage care. The male mates regularly with the hen and also acts as an escort to and from the nest.VACCINATION
Vaccination plays an important part in the health management of the poultry flock. There are numerous diseases that are prevented by vaccinating the birds against them. A vaccine helps to prevent a particular disease by triggering or boosting the bird’s immune system to produce antibodies that in turn fight the invading causalorganisms.
NUTRITION REQUIREMENTS OF MEAT CHICKENS (BROILERS The intake of nutrients is defined by the nutrient levels in the feed and the amount of feed consumed. Nutrient requirements of meat chickens (broilers) are outlined in Table 1. There are a number of factors that influence voluntary feed intake. Table 1 provides data on typical feed consumption and body weight for modern broiler chickensin
COMMON PROBLEMS AND TREATMENT METHODS FOR BACKYARD Common problems and treatment methods for backyard chickens. Common health and welfare issues associated with backyard poultry include worms, rodents, mites, egg binding, prolapse, cannibalism, nutritional deficiencies, and impacted crop and gizzard. There are detailed instructions for treatment of worms, mites and diseases. NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS OF DUCKS Each duck will eat about 225 g of feed per day. Provide about 40% of this in the morning feed and 60% in the evening feed. Ducks must have access to unlimited soluble grit, such as shell grit, and to unlimited fresh drinking water. Table 3. Rations for breeding ducks*.Ingredients.
KEEPING POULTRY IN SCHOOLS Keeping Poultry in Schools. Poultry CRC and the NSW Department of Education & Communities (DEC) produced these videos outlining the fundamentals of keeping chickens in schools. These can also be accessed via Learning NSW DET’s YouTube channel. The films are targeted at schools that are new to keeping chickens, providing information and useful insights from a school already using poultry inFEED AND WATER
Poultry are usually fed pellets, crumbles and a variety of seeds or mash. Poultry can be fed by using grain feeders or simply by attaching a feed and water container to their cages. Feed can be stored in feed bins and under a roof to prevent spoilage. The disease can range from acute septicaemia (blood poisoning) to chronic and localised infections. Domestic fowl, game birds and small feral birds are susceptible. Turkeys are more susceptible than chickens, older chickens are more susceptible thanyounger ones

NUTRITION - POULTRY HUB AUSTRALIA Poultry Nutrient Requirements. Poultry diets must be formulated to provide all of the bird’s nutrient requirements if optimum growth and production is to be achieved. There are six classes of nutrients: Carbohydrates – the major source of energy for poultry. Most of the carbohydrate in poultry diets is provided by cereal grains. FEED FORMULATION
Feed Formulation. Feed formulation is the process of quantifying the amounts of feed ingredients that need to be combined to form a single uniform mixture (diet) for poultry that supplies all of their nutrient requirements.Since feed accounts for 65-75% of total live production costs for most types of poultry throughout the world, a simple mistake in diet formulation can be extremely expensiveBODY SYSTEMS
Birds, like all vertebrates, consist of a number of systems that each operate independently or with each other to provide for the normal activity and functioning of the animal as a whole. Circulatory system. Digestive system. Embryology of the chicken. Endocrine system.ODOUR EMISSIONS
Odour emissions from tunnel ventilated poultry housing. In Australia, factors such as local planning processes, urban encroachment into rural areas and intensification of the poultry industry have increased the potential for odour and dust nuisance. At present, accurate estimates of odour emissions from mechanically ventilated poultryhousing
FEED EVALUATION
Feed Evaluation. Feed evaluation is the testing of feed quality, providing information on the composition of feed or feed ingredients as well as their suitability for poultry.Poultry feed is made up of many ingredients, which are broadly grouped into providers of energy (fats, oils and carbohydrates), protein (amino acids), vitamins, minerals and product quality enhancement.CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Circulatory System. The circulatory system is responsible for the transport of the various essential compounds and other factors around the body, as well as the removal of the metabolic wastes that accumulate in the tissues from body activities, to the appropriate places. The compounds and other factors transported around the body are blood, nutrients, medications and antibodies to fight WOODY BREAST CONDITION In recent times, white striping and hard or “woody” texture has been observed in some chicken breast muscles. Indeed, at the recent 14 th European Poultry Conference in Norway, a session dedicated to meat quality discussed these issues.. Professor Sandra Velleman from Ohio State University is also now working on a deeper understanding of the so-called “woody breast” condition.* About
