THE MONUMENTAL GUIDE TO SHORT NAPS AKA EVERYTHING YOU NEED However, for most babies older than 2-4 months, normal naps fall within the ranges of normal baby sleep outlined here.By approximately 4-5 months babies have a somewhat mature sleep cycle of about 50 minutes (this gradually lengthens to adult levels of 90-110 minutes by school age).. Thus anything over ~50 minutes is a pretty solid nap as they’re successfully getting through one 6-9 MONTH BABY SLEEP GUIDE You can no longer nurse, rock, pat, etc your older baby to sleep. If your 6-9 month old baby is sleeping poorly THIS is the problem. It’s not the teething, growth spurts, wonder weeks, learning to roll over, or any of those other changes that make parenting an older baby so exciting. The problem is that they haven’t yet learned how to fall asleep on their own. ARE YOU KEEPING YOUR BABY AWAKE TOO LONG? Most newborn babies (under 8 weeks) can’t stay awake very long (I sometimes refer to this as a baby’s “window of wakefulness.”) Although it varies by baby, most newborns can stay awake no longer than 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Some may not be able to stay awake more than 30 minutes at a time. This is generally the maximumEAT PLAY SLEEP FAIL
Eat Play Sleep is a popular baby management plan that shows up in a number of best-selling books (Baby Whisperer, BabyWise, etc.).I’ve steered clear of the Eat Play Sleep conundrum because I don’t like to poke at other baby sleep people. WHY CIO ISN'T WORKING What is An Extinction Burst? Sleep training via CIO is a method to break out of unhealthy sleep habits by forcing the issue because those habits are keeping everybody awake. It is essentially a form of “extinction therapy” where you are working to make the undesirable behavior (up all night) become extinct by no longer rewarding/reinforcing it. WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE ROCK N' PLAY RECALL Many people have heard about the Rock n’ Play recall. But the story is a lot bigger than the recall. It’s also about inclined sleep and many products that haven’t been recalled. It’s about how we learned about the risks of the RnP. About the CPSC and consumer reports. It’s about severe sleep deprivation and parents who needoptions.
HELPING YOUR BABY WELCOME BABY #2: SIBLING TRANSITION Invite him to sit next to you. Cuddle. Have him help you. Make up stores together. Have him “read” to you and the baby while you nurse. Use baby’s natural reflexes to show him how to get “finger hugs” from the baby (newborn will clench her hand around his finger) instead of big overzealous bear hugs of a toddler. WHY SLEEP TRAINING DIDN'T WORK If the last step in your bedtime routine is a nice nursing session or a bottle you’re inadvertently reinforcing the eat=sleep association. Don’t feel bad, MANY smart & talented people get tripped up by this. Switch up your routine so that there is a ~20 minute gap between the last bottle/nursing session and bedtime. Bedtime for Toddlers and Preschoolers. Your toddler, preschooler, and younger kid should be going to bed between 6:30 PM – 8:00PM, most commonly 7:30PM. Later than that is HOW TO CRY IT OUT: THE BEDTIME EDITION But it really is for the best. If you’ve come to the conclusion that cry it out is the answer this is a great overview. 1) To break out of the desperate pattern of bedtime battles and frequent night wakings and get everybody sleeping a civilized amount during the night. 2) To achieve goal #1 with the minimal amount of crying. BABY SLEEP WHAT IS NORMAL? In a word, yes. For the first few weeks after birth, baby sleep may be all over the map. They may sleep so much you find yourself wondering why other new mommies seem so tired. Or they may never sleep for more than 45-minute windows leaving you wondering how you can possibly make it through one more night. Thus anything over ~50 minutes is a pretty solid nap as they’re successfully getting through one 3-6 MONTH BABY SLEEP SURVIVAL GUIDE Work Towards the Crib. Unless you are into co-sleeping for the long haul, now is a great time to start working on having your baby sleep in the crib. I’m not suggesting that the second your baby turns 3 months they need to be in the crib, but I am suggesting that 3-6 months is typically the easiest time window to make this change.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT After you’ve read 1 or 8 books on baby sleep you may be rightfully confused about why your 8 month+ baby is not sleeping through the night. And while I’ll admit that there are a few reasons why this may be happening 99% of the time there is one single reason why older babies, toddlers, and even preschool kids are still waking up multipletimes each night.
WHEN YOUR KID WON'T STAY IN BED I will be coming back to reference this soon. My 2 year old hasn’t attempted to escape yet but I just can’t envision a scenario where she would just stay in bed all night if she wasn’t in a crib. WHEN BABY CRIES TOO MUCH Newborn babies cry. A lot. The average newborn cries for a total of 3 hours throughout the day. Crying and/or fussiness peaks at 6-weeks of age. Typically crying drops to about 1 hour a day by 3 months. It is almost impossible to really measure how much your newborn baby cries throughout the day. WHEN BABIES DROP NAPS AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT Signs it’s Time to Drop a Nap. How do you know your baby is ready to drop a nap? It is challenging, especially given that there are so many potential causes of bad naps.If you’re within the general time-frame for nap droppage and you’re seeing the TODDLERS AND PACIFIERS: A CASE STUDY The Toddler Pacifier Love Affair. We battled tantrums about wanting to “go visit paci” (it lived in the criband nowhere else).
5 REASONS TO SWADDLE YOUR BABY There are many reasons to swaddle your baby however the reduction of SIDS and the increase in sleep are the two most important to swaddlenewborn babies.
HOW AND WHY TO USE AND LOSE THE PACIFIER Cut down paci use during the day. Lots of babies simply exist WITH a pacifier. But if you’re ready to drop the pacifier at sleep time, it’ll go easier if you start with day time. Start with small windows of time and use lots of distraction (songs, play, go outside) CAN I MAKE NOISE WHILE BABY SLEEPS? But there are times when even quiet noises will wake your child. THE PRECIOUS LITTLE SLEEP BOOK Precious Little Sleep captures Alexis’s common sense approach to sleep, along with her delicious sense of humor, compassion and straight talk to help any parent who is looking to begin their parenting journey with a plan for supporting their child s healthy sleeping habits and for parents already in the soup when it comes tobaby and sleep.
TODDLER AND PRESCHOOLER SLEEP GUIDE However many of the fundamental sleep challenges of toddlers and preschoolers are the same as those of infants namely: maintaining a consistent age-appropriate sleep schedule and having them fall asleep independently. Babies often aren’t falling asleep independently because they’re being rocked, nursed, cuddled, or patted to sleep. 6-9 MONTH BABY SLEEP GUIDE You can no longer nurse, rock, pat, etc your older baby to sleep. WHERE WILL YOUR NEWBORN BABY SLEEP? There are few things more fun for a new Mom (or even experienced Moms) than decorating the new baby’s room. We coordinate colors and stack diapers while quietly fantasizing about the sweet moments when we’ll gently lay our beloved newborn into her crib and silently creep out of the room to enjoy a healthy gourmet meal with our partner while discussing world events. IS YOUR CRIB AS SAFE AS YOU THINK? So it’s hard to know that there is a problem with your crib setup when the world is full of pictures modeling unsafe sleep. According to the AAP Safe Sleep position your crib should be safe, dark, and dull. That’s it.
3-6 MONTH BABY SLEEP SURVIVAL GUIDE Work Towards the Crib. Unless you are into co-sleeping for the long haul, now is a great time to start working on having your baby sleep in the crib. I’m not suggesting that the second your baby turns 3 months they need to be in the crib, but I am suggesting that 3-6 months is typically the easiest time window to make this change.
I'm Alexis and figuring out how to get your kids to sleep better is my secret superpower (I was hoping for the ability to shoot laser beams out of my eyes but c'est la vie). I swoon for pop culture references. I'm not nearly as funny as I think I am. And I believe you can never have too much wine, cheese, or Gameof Thrones.
