The Loudness Penalty website has been one of the most successful projects I’ve ever worked on, and also one of the most controversial.. We knew when we chose to include the word “Penalty” in the name that it would ruffle some feathers – and we were OK with that. After all, we wanted the site to be useful but also to raise awareness.IAN SHEPHERD

I’m a fierce critic of the so-called “Loudness Wars” and in 2010 I organised the first Dynamic Range Day to raise awareness about the issue. You can contact me via email, Facebook or Twitter, where I post regular recording, mixing and mastering hints and tips, and try to answer questions from anyone who wants to ask ! 12 OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS FOR SOUND Lots of people have asked me for albums I think sound great - so, here are some that spring instantly to mind. I should say upfront, this isn't intended to be some kind of "top 12 best sounding albums ever" list, just some from my own collection that I love the sound of, forwhatever reason.
PEAK TO LOUDNESS RATIO (PLR) AND ONLINE LOUDNESS PLR stands for the Peak to Loudness Ratio of a piece of audio, sometimes referred to as the crest factor. You may have come across the “ DR ” measurement of the TT Meter – PLR is the same idea, but using the modern LUFS loudness unit standard. PLR is a long-term measurement, giving you an overall value for a song, album or sectionof audio.
HOW EQ CAN MAKE YOUR MUSIC SOUND LOUDER Change the EQ, and you change the way we hear it’s loudness – the way we perceive the level. So once you change the EQ, you may need to tweak the level – and vice versa. I wrote about this idea in more detail here. This creates a challenge – but also offers an exciting opportunity. The challenge is to get the balance of EQ and level MASTERING FOR EARBUDS ? BAD IDEA Wrong again. The better the reproduction system, the more music that sounds bad on it. The more revealing the monitoring, the more revealing it is – of flaws and problems. The more accurate the playback is, the harder it is to make something sound great. The closer to perfection the speakers are, the closer to perfection yourmixes need to be.
MY MASTERING CHAIN
My mastering chain – signal flow. A question I get asked all the time is “what’s your mastering chain ?” – meaning. What order do you put your processing in, when mastering ? So for what it’s worth, here is the answer. I’ve worked like this ever since I was first trained as a mastering engineer, and it applies whether I’m inthe
ARE THESE THE BEST LIVE CONCERT DVDS EVER ? Talking Heads “Stop Making Sense”. Probably The Best Live Concert Film In The World Ever. (Clip above) Not only a great performance, but a great piece of film-making, too. Buy the DVD, watch it with the volume cranked up, then watch it again and listen to the fascinating commentary soundtrack ! WHY PEAKING AT ZERO COULD BE DAMAGING YOUR SPOTIFY UPLOADS If the audio was already peaking near 0 dBFS, the reconstructed waveform will almost certainly contain peaks that are above zero. And that means that the encoded file could cause clipping distortion when it’s reduced to a fixed bit-depth for playback, which wasn’t present in the original. In fact, it’s even worse than that, sometimes.

BUILDING A HOME MASTERING STUDIO This is the third instalment of my series of videos about building a “home mastering studio” in my garage. Part One is here and Part Two is here. This episode is all about acoustics – or more specifically, acoustic treatment. HOW TO MASTER YOUR OWN MUSIC Monitoring. Perhaps the most crucial element of any mastering setup is the monitoring – the speakers and room you use to listen to your music in. Many professional mastering studios have speakers that cost as much as a large family car – and a room that has 7 CRUCIAL EQ BANDS TO HELP BALANCE YOUR MIX Thump in a kick drum. Boom in a bassline. Essential in dub, dubstep and reggae ! Too much and you’ll have flapping speakers and a flabby mix. Too little, and the mix will never have enough weight or depth. 100-200 Hz. This EQ band adds punch in a snare. Gives richness or “bloom” to almost anything. Too much makes things boomy or woolly. WHY I USE A VU METER IN MASTERING Partly because of the reduced peak level, and partly as a result of using my Perception plugin all the time, I now rarely master as loud as the examples in the video. I suggest you don’t allow the VU meter to peak above +1, even when the music is really loud. One of the loudness meters I use in the video is the Nugen VisLM, but recently I WHY MP3S SUCK, AND HOW TO HEAR IT Flat, two-dimensional sound mp3 works by throwing away musical information that we supposedly can’t hear – up to 90% of the original information, at 128kbps. That means all the subtle, delicate stuff, like ambience, space and realism. So a lush, three-dimension original is reduced to a flat, cardboard replica of itself. DAFT PUNK'S RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” is one of the albums of the year. Lead single “Get Lucky” was a massive hit, and the album has been at Number 1 in the charts almost everywhere in the world.. It was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and when it LUFS, DBFS, RMS... WTF ?!? HOW TO READ THE NEW LOUDNESS Simply download the pink noise file here and try it in your own DAW or meter – the RMS level should read very close to -11.5 dBFS. If it doesn’t, something is wrong. And, please feel free to report the results of your own tests in the comments. NINE INCH NAILS' "HESITATION MARKS" First, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor announced that the new album “Hesitation Marks” was going to have an alternative “audiophile” version – not as loud as the “standard” version, and with more bass. Then the “audiophile” version was released, and lots of Nine Inch Nails fans got angry because it only averaged one DR pointProduction Advice
