MUKDENIA ROSSII
Foliage fans love this plant. As an ornamental gem from the saxifrage family, it is outstanding as a full sun to partial shade garden plant. Although the species has cymes of small, star-like, white flowers in spring, the deep-lobed foliage is the reason to grow it. DISANTHUS CERCIDIFOLIUS This genus has only one species--Disanthus cercidifolius. It likes the same type of conditions as Rhododendrons--acidic, moist, rich soil--and protection from wind. Our naturally acidic NW soils are perfect for this deciduous shrub. Keep well watered during our summerdrought.
RHODODENDRON 'BLUE JAY' Rhododendron 'Blue Jay' is a ponticum hybrid that was bred by H.L. Larson in Tacoma, Washington. Blooming late in the season, the lavender-blue flowers with a dark blotch is an attention grabber in the garden. It tends to sprawl and get leggy but regular pruning helps keep this habit in check. LAMPROCAPNOS SPECTABLILIS Sometime ago, while I was sleeping, the species spectabilis and its cultivars of the genus Dicentra was changed to Lamprocapnos (its original name was published in an article in 1850). I’ve seen the name before, but didn’t make the connection, until I was researching for a piece I was writing on one of its cultivars, L. ‘Valentine’. The genus name was changed in 1993, but it wasn’t CLEMATIS MONTANA VAR RUBENS 'FREDA' One of the richest pink flowers in the Clematis montana varieties, 'Freda' really packs a wallop in late spring with its pink flowers against the dark foliage. Since this clematis is shorter and less rampant than other montanas, it makes an excellent choice for smaller gardens than other montanas. It still needs a good structure, hefty shrub or small tree to grow on, no wimpy structures for PENSTEMON 'DARK TOWERS' Penstemon ‘Dark Towers’ is a deer and rabbit resistant plant; but the hummingbirds and butterflies love it. Photographed in author's garden. Gardening for the Homebrewer: Grow and Process Plants for Making Beer, Wine, Gruit, Cider, Perry, and More. By co-authors Debbie Teashon (Rainy Side Gardeners) and ACER RUBRUM 'FAIRVIEW FLAME' Hardiness: Sunset zones: A2, A3, 1-9, 14-17. USDA zones: 4-9. Mature size: Height: 50 feet (15 m). Width: 35 feet (10.66 m). Leaf attributes: Leaves are 5 lobed; triangular ovate lobes and sinuses are irregularly toothed, medium to dark green and undersides are silvery. Fall color is red to scarlett. ACER CIRCINATUM 'PACIFIC FIRE' SCARLET BARK VINE MAPLE Height: 12 feet (3.6 m). Width: 12 feet (3.6 m). Flowering period: Spring. Flowering attributes: Umbels of reddish purple sepals and white petals make up the small flowers, followed by winged red fruits. Leaf attributes: Mid-green leaves, 5-9 lobed and 2-5 inches. In spring the leaves open yellow with hints of orange, turning green for summer PACIFIC NORTHWEST GARDENING Pacific Northwest Native Plants. Container Gardening Northwest. GROW A CUTTING GARDEN IN THE NORTHWEST Summertime allows a mixture of annuals and perennials, selected and cut during their peak blooming times. There are many things to consider in choosing a plant for your cutting garden, including length of stem, strong stems, and, of course, how the flower holds up in a vase. Daylilies have a nice stem, but the flower only lasts the day itis cut.

PRIMULA 'GREEN LACE' The rosette-forming Primula 'Green Lace' was bred by Sandra Tuffin, who owned Uncommon Ground Nursery in Wardsville Ontario, and introduced the plant into the trade in 2002. I first spied a drift of this plant in 2007 at the Terra Nova Nursery's display garden in Canby, Oregon. Pie tin inside a plastic bag and paint poured in. Take a plastic bag and slip the pie tin inside of it. Pour the paint onto the plastic bag. When you’re finished painting, pull the bag off, turn inside out, with the leftover paint inside, and toss it away with no mess to clean up. DOROTHEANTHUS BELLIDIFORMIS The genus Dorotheanthus has only six species in it. Related to Delosperma (ice plant), it too is a succulent. D. bellidiformis comes from South Africa and grows in the sub desert. It is lovely during cool weather; when hot weather arrives, the plant declines. This beautiful little perennial is treated as an annual in the PacificNorthwest.
SOLENOSTEMON SCUTELLARIOIDES Solenostemon is enjoying resurgence in popularity. Introduced in 1851, it did not take long until early catalogs offered over 150 cultivars. It once was the plant of choice in Victorian gardens, used commonly as an edging plant, in containers or planted out as a bedding plant withDusty miller.
