Meteors and Meteor Showers. Meteors are caused by small particles ranging in size from a grain of sand to a pea entering the Earth's atmosphere from space at high speed. Because of the speed, which can be between about 20 km/s and 70 km/s, the particles "burn up" in the upper atmosphere, briefly leaving a visible, incandescent trail. WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION What is light pollution? Light pollution is the unwanted effects of artificial lighting in the night environment. It can take various forms, and may originate from both diffuse and point sources: Glare: The excessive contrast between bright and dark areas in the field of view. Light trespass: Unwanted light (spill light), for example from WANGANUI ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Wanganui. 4574. rskilton@inspire.net.nz. 06 345 9654. We meet every Friday night at the Ward Observatory for public viewing. The Wanganui Society meets on the third Wednesday of every month. Secretary: Mark Lee.
