NEW CHANGES TO THE NATIONAL TRANSFER SCHEME The Home Secretary and Education Secretary have today announced several changes to the National Transfer Scheme (NTS), the scheme by which unaccompanied children seeking asylum are placed with local authorities around the country to ensure they are spread out evenly. AGE DISPUTE PROJECT VOLUNTEER The Children’s section delivers a range of services for unaccompanied children seeking asylum in the UK, offering practical support and advocating on their behalf where necessary. We offer an advice line, drop-in services, therapeutic services, youth activities and social evenings to engage with young separated children. We offer a casework service to many children, particularly CHILDREN’S ADVICE PROJECT Children’s Advice Project. As they move through the asylum process, unaccompanied refugee children experience constant change and instability. They see many different officials and professionals, which can be confusing and disorientating. Our team are often the only people they can turn to for consistent expert guidance and support. HELPING REFUGEES TO FIND A HOME Helping refugees to find a home. Our Private Rented Scheme (PRS) in London helps newly recognised refugees who have become homeless as a direct result of being granted protection in the UK. We offer advice and assistance with finding accommodation, accessing housing benefit and applying for loans or grants to help with rent deposits. LEEDS AFRO-LATINO GROUP At the end of last year we went to see the Leeds Afro-Latino Group – they’ve been working with Basis Project Organisational Development Officer, Mani Thapa, to try to access funding. They often live in refugee camps or urban areas for years; many children have lived their entire lives in refugee camps.. Our volunteers are amazing! They come from all walks of life, from retired therapists providing mental health support to students on social care placements, past Refugee Council clients and local people. They contribute in many different ways, from arranging trips or hospital appointments to giving English language sessions andbefriending.
TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS The Refugee Council has decades of experience running training courses to support service providers in their work with asylum seekers and refugees. All our training is delivered by expert, front-line staff with at least 5 years experience working directly with clients. Courses include case studies, relevant legislation, experiential exercises, and allow participants to share their AGE DISPUTE PROJECT VOLUNTEER The Children’s section delivers a range of services for unaccompanied children seeking asylum in the UK, offering practical support and advocating on their behalf where necessary. We offer an advice line, drop-in services, therapeutic services, youth activities and social evenings to engage with young separated children. We offer a casework service to many children, particularly NEW CHANGES TO THE NATIONAL TRANSFER SCHEME The Home Secretary and Education Secretary have today announced several changes to the National Transfer Scheme (NTS), the scheme by which unaccompanied children seeking asylum are placed with local authorities around the country to ensure they are spread out evenly. These changes were included as part of the outcome of the Government’s consultation into the CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE 3,261. We are there for them. We provide asylum and welfare support, help trafficked children and those whose age has been disputed. We offer mental health therapy to help the children come to terms with their experiences. We also help them with issues such as their care arrangements, education, health issues and other concerns. KENT COUNTY COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR SEPARATED CHILDREN Kent County Council has announced that the Council will stop accepting separated children into its care within days. Additionally, the Council has issued legal proceedings against the Home Secretary for the Home Office’s failure to secure placements for these children. To put this news into context, these actions follow repeated warnings by Kent County Council SUPPORTING REFUGEES INTO EMPLOYMENT Refugees face huge challenges in getting a job. Some fled war torn countries before they completed their education. Others are highly skilled professionals who are struggling to have their qualifications recognised in the UK. They all have so much to contribute but need a helping hand to understand the systems and working culture in the HELPING REFUGEES TO FIND A HOME Helping refugees to find a home. Our Private Rented Scheme (PRS) in London helps newly recognised refugees who have become homeless as a direct result of being granted protection in the UK. We offer advice and assistance with finding accommodation, accessing housing benefit and applying for loans or grants to help with rent deposits.
