AIR RESERVE MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL (ARMS)The AIR
RESERVE MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL (ARMS) was established by Secretary of the Air Force Eugene M. Zuckert on April 1, 1964 as a ribbon award known as the AIR RESERVE FORCES MERITORIOUS RIBBON (ARFMSR). It was converted to a medal on November 2, 1971 by Secretary of the Air Force Robert C. Seamans, Jr. The medal is awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity while serving in an enlisted status in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. It is a good conduct award for Air Reserve Forces airmen. When originally awarded as a ribbon, the service period was a four continuous yearperiod.
For individuals with a beginning date after June 30, 1972, the length of service requirement is three continuous years of service. Award the medal to individuals who accrue at least one year, but less than three years toward award of the medal and terminate their enlisted Reserve status as a commissioned or warrant officer regardless of the beginning eligibility date. Any additional awards of the ARFMSM beyond the initial decoration are denoted by oak leaf clusters. ------------------------- _In doing research for this post, Retiree News found this October 18, 1973 letter aw_arding qualified 154th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron members their Air Reserve Forces MeritoriousRibbon.

DO YOU REALLY NEED 10,000 STEPS PER DAY? _From the nextavenue website _For
the past couple of decades, we’ve been reading headlines about the health benefits of accumulating 10,000 steps per day, the rough equivalent of walking five miles. That can be a pretty intimidating number for many people, but especially for older adults. Luckily, a recent study by a team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found a significant decrease in mortality rates among older women who took far fewer steps per day. So, if you find yourself frowning at the step count on your activity tracker at the end of each day, read on for good news.

WEBMASTER COMMENTS 19.08.10 Retiree Updates – Theodore Merrill: Ted served with the then-203d Combat Communications Squadron and later with the 154th Wing. At the Wing, he was the Wing Historian and the materials he researched are an important part of Retiree News posts. Through his efforts, a lot of historical materials were categorized and saved for future reference. In civilian life, he served as an officer with the Honolulu Police Department. After his civilian and military retirements, he continued living in Wahiawa. In 2006, he relocated back to Arizona where he grew up. In a recent email exchange, he said he misses Hawaii a lot. Greatindividual!
HIANG AIRCREW PROJECT: Retiree News has restarted a project to create a list of all Hawaii Air National Guard members who served as aircrew in our aircraft over the years. Beside pilots and WSOs/navigators, the list will include loadmasters, flight engineers, boomers and flight surgeons. It will eventually be posted on the Retiree News website. This project began as a coffee discussion with MELVIN SOUZA, who wanted to create a list of pilots that flew HIANG aircraft prior to the F-4 Phantoms. This effort paused when Mel passed away severalyears ago.
The current listing has about 300 aircrew listed, but it is far from complete. Retiree News has reached out to several “historians” for comments and inputs. More research is required prior to the firstwebsite post.

THE TALK SENIORS NEED TO HAVE WITH DOCTORS BEFORE SURGERY _From the Kaiser Health News website _The
decision seemed straightforward. Bob McHenry’s heart was failing, and doctors recommended two high-risk surgeries to restore blood flow. Without the procedures, McHenry, 82, would die. The surgeon at a Boston teaching hospital ticked off the possible complications. Karen McHenry, the patient’s daughter, remembers feeling there was no choice but to say “go ahead.” It’s a scene she’s replayed in her mind hundreds of times since, with regret.

HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO BENEFIT FROM A ROTH IRA? _From the Kiplinger website _ A recent pension reform proposal made it through the House, and a similar bill is working its way through the Senate. A provision in the SECURE Act removes the 70½ age limit cap on traditional IRA contributions. If this provision becomes law, it will give older workers another option for saving on a tax- advantaged basis. The proposal reminded me that even without a law change, there are other ways to save on a tax-advantaged basis, as only traditional IRAs currently have an age cap. Other options, like Roth IRAs and employer sponsored retirement plans, are available to older workers, regardlessof age.
The pension reform proposal makes this a good time to focus on an underutilized and important savings opportunity for older workers, the Roth IRA. Let’s look at the details.August 9, 2019
F-22S CONDUCT FARP TRAINING AT JBPHH _Off the Hawaii Air National Guard Facebook page_ _Hawaii Air National Guard Photograph_ Hawaii Air National Guard (HIANG) F-22s and maintainers from the 154th Wing conducted joint Forward Air Refueling Point (FARP) operations training with airman from Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) for the first time at Joint Base PearlHarbor-Hickam.
FARP operations are utilized to refuel aircraft in remote locations when air-to-air refueling is not possible or when fueling stations are not accessible. Our F-22 pilots kept their engines fired up, while receiving a direct line of fuel from an AFSOC MC-130J.
With this capability our Hawaiian Raptors can rapidly refuel and return to the battle space in no time. FARP airmen are specially trained to operate in austere and hostile environments; they are even capable of executing refueling operations in pitch black darkness. Anywhere you can land a MC-130, FARP has the ability to set up a refueling site with both minimal equipment and personnel, to provide versatility while leaving a low footprint. GENETIC-TESTING SCAM TARGETS SENIORS AND RIPS OFF MEDICARE _From the Kaiser Health News website _The
86-year-old woman in rural Utah doesn’t usually answer solicitations from strangers, she said, but the young couple who knocked on her front door seemed so nice. Before long, she had handed over her Medicare and Social Security numbers — and allowed them to swab her cheek to collect her DNA. She is among scores of older Americans who have been targeted in a scam that uses DNA tests to defraud Medicare or steal personal information. Fraudsters find their victims across the country through cold calls, door knocking, email, Facebook ads and Craigslist. They also troll low-income housing complexes, senior centers, health fairs and antique shops. Sometimes they offer ice cream, pizza or $100 gift cards. Some callers claim to work for Medicare, according to a fraud alert issued July 19 by the Federal Trade Commission.Learn more
