Retrieval practice is a strategy in which bringing information to mind enhances and boosts learning. Deliberately recalling information forces us to pull our knowledge “out” and examine what we know. For instance, recalling an answer to a science question improves learning to a greater extent than looking up the answer in a textbook. RETRIEVAL PRACTICE: A POWERFUL STRATEGY FOR LEARNING Retrieval practice is a powerful strategy that boosts learning by pulling information out of students’ heads (e.g., quizzes, clickers and flashcards), rather than cramming information into students heads (e.g., lectures). It's a no-stakes learning opportunity that is flexible and quick, with a huge impact on long-term student achievement. Here are some of our weekly updates on retrievalABOUT & CONTACT

FOUR END-OF-SEMESTER RETRIEVAL ACTIVITIES (NO PREP, NO December 16, 2019 / Pooja K. Agarwal. Looking for no prep and no grading retrieval practice before winter break? Here are my four favorite activities for end-of-semester reflection (in fact, I'm using all four in my classroom this week): Start, Stop, Keep. Rose, Thorn,Bud.
MAKE OFFICE HOURS POWERFUL WITH THESE 10 TIPS To keep things practical, here are my top 10 tips for turning office hours into connection hours. 1) Put your office hour date, time, and location in your email signature. 2) Put your office hour info on reminder slides at the start and end of class. 3) Have students retrieve your office hour info (and space it out) on quizzes. BUT WHAT ABOUT MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS? A leader in cognitive science, Elizabeth Ligon Bjork, Ph.D. from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) specializes in research on students' metacognition (thinking about their own learning), factors that influence forgetting, and particularly multiple-choice retrieval practice. In a recent paper, Elizabeth Bjork and colleague Jeri Little examined the importance of competitive BRAIN DUMPS: A SMALL STRATEGY WITH A BIG IMPACT Here’s a small strategy that makes a big impact on student learning – based on decades of cognitive science research. In scientific lingo, we call it "free recall.". Free recall is also known as a "brain dump," "show what you know," and a "stop and jot." No matter what you call it, try this quick retrieval strategy during your instruction before the end of the school year. HOW CAN WE REDUCE STUDENT ANXIETY? This is a good thing for learning! Retrieval is a "desirable difficulty" that has large benefits down the road. Explain that, based on decades of research, retrieval practice helps students learn more and learn longer. This means that students may study outside of class less because they're remembering more of what they learned duringclass.
