I came to art via engineering. In academic computer music, building own software and tools to achieve specific results is common practice. My installation works also very much rely on self written software and my performances, too.I build hardware, and I played and still play a significant role in the development of a commercial music software called Ableton Live. MONOLAKE - STUDIO - ROBERT HENKE Four a few years I made most of my music completely in software, with nothing but a laptop on my desk. But I love my machines, and the more I spend time in front of a screen all day long, the more I move back to hardware when composing. The machines in my studio are not only part of my musical history but also landmarks of technological innovation and they transmit the ideas and desires of DEEP WEB - ROBERT HENKE Deep Web is an installation using 12 high precision lasers and a matrix of 175 moving balloons to create a dramatic three dimensional sculpture of lines and dots floating in space above the audience. PITCHLOOP89 BY ROBERT HENKE PitchLoop89 is a pitch shifting effect for the Ableton Live digital audio workstation (DAW), inspired by an early digital effects processor, enhanced with a few contemporary features, and implemented in Max4Live.It can be downloaded directly from Ableton and is includedin Live 11 Suite.
LFO 2.0 BY ROBERT HENKE LFO 2.0 is the result of trying to build the best general purpose swiss knife LFO for myself. It needs Ableton Live 9.x with Max4Live installed. It offers three basic ways of modulating a target: Directly via Live's engine, ( Engine) which disables manual control ofROBERT HENKE

Due to manufacturing imperfections, individual machines play the loops with a slightly different sound, pitch and duration. The built-in playback circuit, with its low sampling rate and bitresolution

Lectures and Talks. I enjoy sharing ideas and knowledge. Spring 2013 I spent at Stanford University as artist in residence at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and taught a course entitled 'sound, structure and machines'. Before that I have been professor at the master's program Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts from 2009 - 2013. MICRODRUM BY ROBERT HENKE MicroDrum by Robert Henke. A rough emulation of an old school 8 bit drum sample cell with some ideas borrowed from Roger Linn. This MaxForLive devices needs Ableton Live 9.x Suite. Samples can be truncated at the beginning, facilitated by the zoom ( Zoom) function which displays only 10ms of the drum sample, starting from the startpoint ( Start ).
PHOSPHOR - ROBERT HENKE Phosphor is inspired by Benoît Mandelbrot's fractal geometry, early algorithmic art and contemporary big data models. The software and the mathematical processes have been developed by the artist. Materials: custom computer software, custom UV laser system, phosphorescentpigments.
MONOLAKE - MONODECK
Performing my music live is an important part of my artistic expression. Performing live needs instruments one can perform with. Monodeck I. In 2003 I decided to build my first own MIDI controller, the Monodeck.A MIDI controller is a hardware unit made for controlling a computer in a musical way, turning a general problem solving machine into a true musical instrument. MONOLAKE - HONGKONG REMASTERED Now it's gone and it will find a new home online later and on vinyl . Produced by Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke 1995-1997. Ambient recordings captured in Hong Kong & Guangzhou 1996. Synthesizer solo on Mass Transit Railway by Wieland Samolak . Mastering of the second edition by Rashad Becker, edits by Robert Henke. Total running time59:30.
MONOLAKE - ARCHAEOPTERYX The air is damp, pouring rain hits the melting rocks and vaporises in dramatic hisses. The colors are spectacular, orange-red fluids bubbling in slow motion, dark blue water filling deep caves, nearly black clouds tower at the horizon, sudden patches of bright blue sky open up high above, white fog everywhere, an expressionist painting emerges and reconfigures, long before painters do exist.
