Wash the loquats, cut each in half and remove stones. Make a syrup with the honey, water and lemon juice. Add the loquat stones and simmer for 10 minutes then strain. Return the liquid to the saucepan, add the fruit and cook until tender. Transfer to a 21cm pie dish andallow to cool.

MV Helena. From February 2019 the MV Helena can carry up to four passengers on its monthly Sea Freight voyage.. The MV has one four-berth passenger cabin. Each berth is equipped with a curtain, and the cabin has an en-suite bathroom, a sitting area, a desk and a TV. Governor Massingham, speaking at the opening of the Solomons Bakery on 6th September 1983, made some observations about the growth of Half Tree Hollow (sound file, right).. The climate is dry; very similar to that of Jamestown though perhaps a little ‘fresher’.. Apart from the ‘Business Parks’ there are few job opportunities in Half Tree Hollow, so most people commute to work elsewhereGO SWIMMING!
Ruperts Beach is in the adjoining valley to Jamestown. It also has an enclosed beach ideal for swimming, though as Ruperts is also home to the island’s Fuel Storage facility the beach is closed on days when a fuel tanker is offloading (announced on the S.A.M.S. Radio 1 or SaintFM Community Radio local news). It is a popular venue for a swimming and barbecue party.FORTS AND BATTERIES
Ladder Hill Fort is located where, for 100 years, The East India Company used to hang criminals, so the executions could be clearly seen from Jamestown. Governor Robert Brooke built the first fortification here in 1790, extending it in 1797. When St Helena was the dropping-off point for people found on board captured Slaver s, from 1840 until the 1870s, many of the captives were taken to Ruperts to recover or, sadly, to die.As a result, many graves were discovered during the early stages of the airport project and construction of the Haul Road. DIPLOMATIC WIRELESS STATION Remnants. The Diplomatic Wireless Service itself was officially closed with effect from 31st March 1973, its remaining operations being amalgamated into the Foreign Office Communications Division. BETSY BALCOMBE
The Balcombe family arrived on St Helena in 1807 having travelled thousands of miles by sailing ship. Betsy’s father, William Balcombe, worked for the East India Company and also became a local merchant. The family took up residence at the Briars House where Betsy enjoyed a happy childhood often having friends over for tea and games.THE MULE YARD

The Balcombe family arrived on St Helena in 1807 having travelled thousands of miles by sailing ship. Betsy’s father, William Balcombe, worked for the East India Company and also became a local merchant. The family took up residence at the Briars House where Betsy enjoyed a happy childhood often having friends over for tea and games.THE MULE YARD
The Mule Yard. No longer a place for donkeys. If you take a bale of hay and tie it to the tail of a mule, and then strike a match and set the bale of hay on fire, and if you then compare the energy expended shortly thereafter by the mule with the energy expended by yourself in the striking of the match, you will understand the concept ofamplification.

MV Helena. From February 2019 the MV Helena can carry up to four passengers on its monthly Sea Freight voyage.. The MV has one four-berth passenger cabin. The island’s first (and, for 38 years, only) radio station, Radio St Helena launched on Christmas Day 1967. From 1958 the Union Castle Line had been gradually reducing their shipping calls to the island, ceasing calls entirely in 1977. The island’s only communications link became the first RMS St Helena. Longwood House is situated in the district of Longwood, some 6 km from Jamestown and has twice been voted one of the Seven Wonders of St Helena.It was the residence of Napoleon, during most of his exile on St Helena, JONATHAN THE TORTOISE Jonathan is one of several giant tortoises that live in the grounds of Plantation House, the residence of the Governor of St Helena.Jonathan is the most famous because he is the oldest - indeed he may be the oldest living land animal on the planet!. Visitors to Plantation House can see the tortoises roaming free in the grounds. If you’re lucky, Jonathan may pose for a photo!FORTS AND BATTERIES
Ladder Hill Fort is located where, for 100 years, The East India Company used to hang criminals, so the executions could be clearly seen from Jamestown. Governor Robert Brooke built the first fortification here in 1790, extending it in 1797. The fort had its own water supply carried from what is now the Redhill Treatment Works, below High Knoll Fort, in a channel, probably of stone (see BOER POWS | SAINT HELENA ISLAND INFO: ALL ABOUT ST HELENA Churches across the island hold special services to celebrate the end of the (Second) Boer War. 26 th June 1902: The first Boer PoWs leave St Helena for Cape Town aboard the Canada. 3 rd October 1902: 95 Boer PoWs are reported to have died while on St Helena, mostly from entericfever.
