The 2021 Salzburg Whitsun Festival was the first major classical music festival worldwide to take place after the end of the cultural lockdown, running from 21 to 24 May. Under the motto ROMA ÆTERNA, Cecilia Bartoli invited the audience on a musical journey through her hometown, Rome. This was the tenth Whitsun Festival programme theartistic
HAUS FÜR MOZART • SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE The Salzburg architects Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels gave the hall the form it had until 2004. For many years the Salzburg Festival had followed plans to create a “House for Mozart” which would in every respect be suitable for the performance of the composer’s stage works, with excellent acoustics and the best possible sight lines from ELEKTRA • SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE 2021 • OPERA • TICKETS Those are Elektra’s words to her sister Chrysothemis in answer to the latter’s announcement that Orestes, their long-awaited brother, has miraculously appeared and is being given a triumphant welcome, having killed, one after the other, Clytemnestra, their mother, and Aegisthus, her lover and the new ruler of the city. GROSSES FESTSPIELHAUS • SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE The plans for a Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall), where the former archiepiscopal princely stables were located, were drawn up primarily by the architect Clemens Holzmeister; Herbert von Karajan also made many suggestions for the building project, in particular regarding the design of the theatre hall. FELSENREITSCHULE • SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE The first opera production in the Felsenreitschule took place in 1948 when Herbert von Karajan conducted Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. From the end of the 1960s radical conversion and adaptation work took place, mainly according to plans by the “festival architect” Clemens Holzmeister. An understage area, an orchestral pit and alighting

For more than 40 years she has been a fixture in all the world’s major concert halls, making her mark on the classical music scene as a soloist, mentor and visionary. Dass Sie, verehrte Festspielgäste, diese Kunst aufs Vortrefflichste beherrschen, hat Salzburg auch 2018 zu einem „Epizentrum des Besonderen“ gemacht. Tausend Dank dafür! 2019 wollen wir Ihre Empathie für die Mythen der Antike wecken, in denen Festspielgründer Hugo von Hofmannsthal „einen magischen Spiegel“ sah. Stellen doch die mythischen Erzählungen von einst die ewiggültigen Fragen nach unserer Existenz. Sie thematisieren Krieg, Flucht, Opfer, Rachedurst, Schuld und Sühne. Die Eröffnungspremiere wird Mozarts _Idomeneo_sein. Hier wird der
Herrscher zu bewusstem Handeln gezwungen, zerrissen zwischen der Pflicht gegenüber den Göttern und der Liebe zur Familie. Mit _Œdipe_ in George Enescus
gleichnamiger Oper steht uns hingegen ein Unwissender gegenüber: Er wird schuldlos schuldig. Familiäre und politische Konflikte liefern auch die fesselnde Handlung für _Simon Boccanegra_. Verdis Werk
erinnert uns an die schicksalhaften Verkettungen in den großen antiken Erzählungen. Eine der zentralen mythologischen Frauenfiguren ist Medea, die sich in unserem Programm zweifach widerspiegelt. Basierend auf dem Stoff von Euripides’ Tragödie komponierte Luigi Cherubini 1797 mit _Médée _ in großes Seelendrama um enttäuschte Liebe und blutige Rache. Der französische Komponist Pascal Dusapin bietet uns hingegen, ausgehend von Heiner Müllers_Medeamaterial _,
eine aufwühlend zeitgenössische Interpretation. Auf ganz andere Weise reagierte Jacques Offenbach auf den Antikenkult seiner Zeit. Seine Operette _Orphée aux enfers_ ist
Persiflage und Gesellschaftssatire zugleich. Und wie jedes Jahr nehmen wir die Pfingstoper mit unserer wunderbarenCecilia Bartoli
im Sommer
wieder auf. Georg Friedrich Händels _Alcina_ wurzelt tief im
mündlichen Erzählschatz vergangener Zeiten. Mit den Mythen spielt auch das Schauspielprogramm. Die Uraufführung von THERESIA WALSER’S_DIE EMPÖRTEN
_ überträgt
den antiken Grundkonflikt von Antigone und Kreon in unsere Zeit. Maxim Gorkis _SOMMERGÄSTE_hingegen lassen
sich als Antithese zur mythologischen Erzählung lesen. Die Menschen sind für ihr Schicksal selbst verantwortlich. Mit _LILIOM _ von Ferenc Molnár wird ein Charakter der permanenten Entäußerung in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Ein Fluch scheint in _JUGEND OHNE GOTT_ auf der
Gemeinschaft von Schülern und Lehrern zu lasten, dem sie nicht entkommen und der zwei von ihnen den Tod bringt. Den Mythos des Sisyphos greift ALBERT OSTERMAIERin einem
dramatischen Monolog auf, eine weitere Uraufführung für die Salzburger Festspiele an ungewöhnlichem Ort. Mit einer Marathonlesung von James Joyces _ULYSSES_ knüpft das
Schauspielprogramm direkt an Homers Odyssee an: als Echo der Antike inunserer Zeit.
Wie sehr Erzählung auch Gesang war, davon zeugen eindrucksvoll die antiken Epen. In unserer diesjährigen _OUVERTURE SPIRITUELLE_
nehmen der Schmerz, die Klage und die Tränen klanglich Gestalt an. Sie berühren unsere Seele: sei es in Orlando di Lassos _LAGRIME DISAN PIETRO
_, bei
Palestrina, Gesualdo und Bach, in der Musik Schostakowitschs oder bei Nono, Gubaidulina und Rihm. Hermann Bahr, einer der Vordenker der Festspielidee, beantwortete die Frage „Warum Mythen heute?“ so: „Mein Zukunft mit Ungeduld verlangender Blick kehrt seit je doch am liebsten bei längst entschwundenen Vergangenheiten ein, da hole ich mir die Zukunft.“ Dazu laden wir Sie im Sommer 2019 ein. _Helga Rabl-Stadler_ _Markus Hinterhäuser__Lukas Crepaz_

Donizettis _Don Pasquale_ passt 2020 erstaunlich gut zum 100-Jahr-Jubiläum der Salzburger Festspiele, die üblicherweise mit Mozart und Strauss in Zusammenhang gebracht werden, und entspricht auch meinem Bemühen, das Festspielrepertoire stets weiter zubereichern.
Sechsmal stand Donizettis Opera buffa auf dem Festspielprogramm, darunter auch ganz am Beginn, wie ich im Archiv nachgelesen habe: 1922 führte man die ersten Opern auf, natürlich von Mozart. Nach zwei für die Festspiele schwierigen und opernlosen Jahren wurden 1925 _Don Giovanni_ und _Le nozze di Figaro_ wiederaufgenommen und eine weitere Aufführung der Wiener Staatsoper in Salzburg gezeigt: _Don Pasquale_, glänzend besetzt mit Bruno Walter, Maria Ivogün, Karl Erb, Hermann Wiedemann und dem berühmten Salzburger Bass Richard Mayr. Somit ist _Don Pasquale_ die erste Oper im Festspielrepertoire, die nicht von Mozart stammt. Die Produktion muss ein Erfolg gewesen sein, denn 1930 stand sie unter Bruno Walter erneut auf dem Spielplan. Ein Jahr später wurde _Don Pasquale_ als Gastspiel einer italienischen Truppe aufgeführt. Bei Neuproduktionen in den 1950er und 1970er Jahren standen beliebte Künstlernamen wie der Regisseur Oscar Fritz Schuh sowie Hilde Güden, Sesto Bruscantini, Graziella Sciutti, Fernando Corena, Rolando Panerai — und Riccardo Mutiauf dem
Besetzungszettel, der 1971 als Dirigent von _Don Pasquale_ sein Festspieldebüt gab. Als ich in einem anderen Zusammenhang erfuhr, dass Pauline Viardot Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die Norina gesungen hat, begann ich darüber nachzudenken, wie sich am Übergang vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert der „Divo“ nach und nach zu einer „Diva“ gewandelt hatte, während seine — und später eben _ihre_ — Funktion dieselbe geblieben war: Sie stellten herausragende Künstlerpersönlichkeiten dar, um die sich im musikalischen sowie gesellschaftlichen Leben zu ihrer Zeit alles drehte. In Italien, England und Spanien war man um 1730 hauptsächlich auf einen glänzenden Stern fokussiert: Farinelli. Er war Symbol für eine Reihe von Kastraten, die mit ihrer herrlichen Kunst — aber auch mit lautstarken Skandalen — bestimmten, was zur Blütezeit des Barock auf den europäischen Opernbühnen passierte. Doch je weiter die Strahlen der Aufklärung das 19. Jahrhundert erleuchteten, desto mehr wandten sich die Fans von diesen extravaganten, von absolutistischen Monarchen verzogenen jungen Männern ab und einer neuen Gottheit zu: der Prima_donna_. Von nun an lagen sie Frauen zu Füßen, wunderbaren Künstlerinnen, welche die Werte der postrevolutionären und bürgerlichen Gesellschaft besser verkörperten als Kastraten, deren Künstlichkeit, vom Hochadel so geliebt, plötzlich als unnatürlich angesehen wurde. Frauen waren die neuen Musen für aufstrebende Komponisten, sie nahmen Einfluss darauf, was letztendlich in eine Partitur gelangte, auf die Repertoirepolitik an Theatern, Besetzungen und Gagen; manch eine von ihnen verfügte über großen gesellschaftlichen Einfluss. Sie waren ehrwürdige Persönlichkeiten wie Isabella Colbran und Giuditta Pasta — oder Maria Malibran, die den freien, impulsiven Geist der Romantik verkörperte. Abgesehen von ihrem musikalischen Talent und ihrem neuartigen, intensiven Spiel auf der Bühne wurde die Malibran wegen ihres öffentlich ausgebreiteten Privatlebens und frühen Todes zur ultimativen Ikone, zur Marilyn Monroe des 19.Jahrhunderts.
Doch es war Maria Malibrans jüngere Schwester, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, die eine nachhaltige Wirkung auf die Kultur Europas ausüben sollte: Wie die anderen Mitglieder ihrer Familie ebenfalls außerordentlich musikalisch begabt, wurde Pauline in den führenden Opernhäusern bejubelt. Dank ihrer einnehmenden Art und der Beherrschung mehrerer Sprachen war sie ein willkommener Gast in eleganten Salons von Paris bis Sankt Petersburg. Bewundert von Virtuosen, Komponisten und Künstlern, wurde jedoch vor allem ihre intime Freundschaft zu Iwan Turgenjew zum bekanntesten Kapitel inihrem Privatleben.
Wie Maria und ihr Bruder Manuel war Pauline ein Kind der italienischen Romantik und des Belcanto. In frühen Jahren sang auch sie mit Erfolg Mozart, Rossini und Donizetti. Im Lauf ihres langen Lebens — von 1821 bis 1910 — sowie infolge enger persönlicher Verbindungen zu Deutschland und Frankreich setzte sie sich für eine unglaubliche Vielfalt an musikalischen Stilrichtungen ein, etwa für Werke von Meyerbeer, Berlioz, Brahms, Wagner, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Massenet und sogar Gabriel Fauré, der beinahe ihr Schwiegersohn wurde. Als Schülerin von Franz Liszt und Anton Reicha sowie Duopartnerin von Chopin war Pauline eine exzellente Pianistin und Komponistin. Ihre makellose Gesangstechnik, die sie an erfolgreiche Schülerinnen und Schüler weitergab, erlaubte es ihr, jahrzehntelang in ihrem Beruf tätig zu sein. Die glückliche Ehe mit dem französischen Theaterdirektor, Autor und Kunstkritiker Louis Viardot wiederum nützte ihrer Karriere als angesehene Sängerin und erlaubte es ihr, sich als große Förderin der Künste zu betätigen, die den tiefgreifenden kulturellen Wandel von der Frühromantik zum Impressionismus und zur frühen Moderne weitsichtig begleitete. Zu Pfingsten 2020 werden wir dieser außergewöhnlichen Frau, die auf einer Tournee mit ihrem Schwager, dem belgischen Geiger und Pianisten Charles-Auguste de Bériot, auch einmal in Salzburg auftrat, als Opern-, Konzert- und Liedsängerin sowie in Werken, deren Entstehung sie veranlasste, begegnen. Ganz besonders freue ich mich auf mein Debüt in _Don Pasquale_,
einer Oper, die ich innig liebe. Die Rolle der Norina singe ich in einer Version mit Variationen, Kadenzen und musikalischen Einschüben, die auf eine Aufführungsserie des Don Pasquale in Sankt Petersburg 1845 mit Pauline Viardot als Norina zurückgeht. Die historischen Instrumente im Orchester nehmen das Klangbild auf, welches wir hier in Salzburg bereits für Bellini und Rossini erarbeitet haben. Eine Manuel García und seinen drei berühmten Kindern — Manuel, Maria und Pauline — gewidmete Gala bildet für mich den Höhepunkt des Programms. Man kann Rossini in seinem Dank an diese Künstlerpersönlichkeiten nur beipflichten: Ihr nachhaltiger Einfluss auf über hundert Jahre Musikgeschichte lässt einen staunen! Zu Beginn enthusiastische Förderer von Werken Mozarts, Rossinis und Bellinis, brachten sie als erste die Oper nach New York. Durch ihr pädagogisches Wirken hatten sie zudem großen Einfluss auf das deutsche Lied. Und noch am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts pries man die berühmte Studentin von Paulines Schülerin Aglaja Orgeni, Margarethe Siems, für ihren überragenden Gesang in den Uraufführungen von Richard Strauss’ _Elektra_, _Rosenkavalier_ und _Ariadne auf Naxos_ …Cecilia Bartoli
