------------------------- SAM’S VINTAGE PRINTS AT ‘ART ON PAPER’ FAIR MIAMI BEACHDecember 5th, 2015
Sam’s work is being shown by (WAS) Gallery at the ‘Art on Paper’ fair in Miami Beach, Dec 2-6, 2015. It is hard to believe, but this is the first time ever that a selection of works by Sam has been shown comprised purely of black and white silver prints from each of the four sixties books ‘Five Girls’ 1962, ‘Cowboy Kate’ 1964, ‘November Girl’ 1967 and ‘African Image’ 1967. None of Sam’s sixties books has ever had a dedicated show, something that we will start to put right in September 2016 when ‘November Girl’ will have an exhibition debut at Nailya Alexander galleryin New York.
Thank you to the many passionate visitors who came by, both old fans, some with phenomenally deep knowledge of photo history and young photo lovers discovering Sam’s work for the first time. We look forward to welcoming fans old and new at Photo LA in January 2016, just a fewweeks from now.

RAMP is an unusual and highly regarded monthly magazine published in Germany. It combines the classic lust for self expression through cars with excellent cultural, lifestyle and arts coverage. There is, to the best of my knowledge, nothing like it in the English speaking world. It’s unashamed sense of stylish fun is an alignment of values with Sam’s, who incidentally restored and rallied vintage cars as a hobby. I recently discovered, while preparing the archive for shipment to Europe, a box of his silver trophies from those competitivemotoring days.

* UPDATE *
August 22, 2015
The Cowboy Kate maquette is no longer available from the estate. It will be auctioned at Christie’s in London in May 2016 to coincide with Photo-London .++++++
Original Post: July 2015 The Sam Haskins Estate is making available for sale the last remaining copies of Sam’s maquettes from two of his legendary photo books of the sixties. First up is the last remaining maquette of Cowboy Kate. Sam only made four copies in 1963. This is an extraordinary photographic object. Constructed of silver prints all produced my Sam. For a complete list of specs please download the PDF “Sam HaskinsMaquettes”
Cowboy Kate Maquette from Ludwig Haskinson Vimeo .
Extremely rare, one of only four constructed in 1963. Photography, printing, retouching, book design and maquette construction by SamHaskins.
Note: Book is on a viewing stand to protect the binding. We are also selling the last remaining copy of Five Girls (1962) maquette constructed by Sam in 1961. Although Cowboy Kate’s enormous immediate popularity went on to become a lasting icon of the sixties and a legendary point of reference for many image makers and designers, the book that preceded Kate, Five Girls, is in many ways historically more important. Five Girls was a milestone in freeing nude photography from cliché and an immediate inspiration to many other leading photographers of the time, including Jeanloup Sieff, Wingate Paine and Helmut Newton. The maquettes are the creative mother lode of Sam’s sixties books. Meticulously designed, printed and constructed, the physical prints are still sparkling after more than half a century. These maquettes are not just an amazing photographic experience each time they are viewed, they are in effect an entire photographic exhibition of vintage silver prints, in a single object. Speaking of exhibitions, for a variety of time pressure reasons and shifting priorities which coincided with Sam’s move to London in 1968, none of Sam’s sixties books has ever had an exhibition, until now. The next ten years is going to see the first exhibitions, of Sam’s sixties work along with reprints and new titles. In other words these maquettes will see an investment return leveraged by the estate’s work now that the archives have been released to us. Five Girls Maquette from Ludwig Haskinson Vimeo .
Extremely rare, one of only three constructed in 1961. Photography, printing, retouching, book design and maquette construction by SamHaskins.
Note: Book is on a viewing stand to protect the binding. Later projects never resulted in objects of this kind, not least of all because Sam never did a pure black and white book again after ‘November Girl’ and ‘African Image’ both published in 1967. But Sam’s thinking remained most at home in an analogue space. With his last book, Fashion Etcetera (2009), although the production was all in Adobe InDesign the pages were still sequenced by Sam on the big library table of his home in Bowral using small A5 prints. Parties interested in discussing the purchase of the maquettes should please contact me directly on: books@thehaskinspress.com Tags: art books , books, collecting

SAM HASKINS – BIRTHDAYNovember 12th, 2013
Sam (1926-2009), born on Armistice Day, would have been 87 today. Raised in South Africa with incredibly humble roots, his many talents found a spiritual home in photography. And, his creative abode welcomed him and recognised his ground breaking contributions across a broad spectrum of creative photography. As he himself said “photography has been very good to me”. His input was huge and without doubt the greatest payback is the pervasive influence that he has had on the profession for over half a century. Here are some portraits of Sam over the years. Taken at the ‘Fashion Etcetera’ exhibition in NY, 2009, a week after Sam’s stroke and a few weeks before hisdeath.
