LOST & FOUND: THE CZU LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE PROJECT In the summer of 2020 the CZU Lightning Complex Fire burned more than 80,000 acres, led to the evacuation of more than 60,000 people and the destruction of over 900 homes. Award-winning Santa Cruz Sentinel photojournalist, Shmuel Thaler, and NPR radio producer and former history curator, Nikki Silva, have teamed up with the MAH to beginTEAM | MAH

An Inspiring Place. Created in 1858, the Evergreen Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in California. Located next to Harvey West park in Santa Cruz, Evergreen is the final resting place for Gold prospectors, artists, Chinese immigrants, mountain men, Yankees, Civil War veterans, lawyers, Masons, infants, travelers, and more. SANTA CRUZ SPEED WHEELS His creations have traversed the globe while becoming synonymous with American skate and surf culture. Browse the largest collection of work by local artist, Jim Phillips, in the upcoming exhibition, Santa Cruz Speed Wheels. We dance to bring their spirits back to honor their lives. Dancing is the happiness and the gifts that we share and celebrate those who have passed on. All dances come from the region of Veracruz where the Son Jarocho continues to be a living tradition. THE DANCES OF DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS The importance of dancing during Día de los Muertos is to pay homage to our ancestors. We dance to bring their spirits back to honor their lives. Dancing is the happiness and the gifts that we share and celebrate those who have passed on. All dances come from the region of Veracruz where the Son Jarocho continues to be a living tradition. TO BEE OR NOT TO BEE Weave your way up the stairwell to see all sides of this hanging 3-D three-story bee and flower installation created by local artist Dag Weiser. Crafted, cut, and colored by Dag Weiser, a local multi-media artist who has been making larger than life artworks out of recycled cardboard for over 40 years. In the early 1900s what caught the city's fasciation was the “largest rose tree in the world.”. Planted right in their backyard. The rose tree flourished in the imagination of locals, and Californians alike when it’s image was featured on picturepostcards.
GUIDE TO THE A.K. SALZ TANNERY COLLECTION (UNPROCESSED A.K. Salz acquired the sole interest in 1929. During World War II, the military purchased the entire leather output. By the late 1940s Salz developed a unique type of leather, “California Saddle Leather,” and marketed its products nationally. Wells, one of the major figures in U.S. Black history, spent a large amount of time in Santa Cruz visiting with her family at their home on River Street during the 1890s. Also unheralded is the story of the first three Black graduates from local schools,all of

One of the larger communities in Santa Cruz County is the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. stayed hidden until the New York Stonewall Riots in 1969. In the 1950s and 1960s, laws, and the great majority of the general public were aligned against LGBTQ+ people. They were “in the closet.”. The 1960s and 1970s were atime of
HISTORY – ARCHIVES In 1928 a dam was on Aptos Creek to create the world’s largest fresh water swimming pool, a bathing pavilion was also built. In 1931 Seacliff was established as a California State Beach, one of the first. By 1937 a beach club was built. PRIDE - QUEER SANTA CRUZ Pride. The first Santa Cruz Pride event took place in the summer of 1975. It was the idea of the Lesbian and Gay Men’s Union (LAGMU). This group started at Cabrillo College. TO BEE OR NOT TO BEE Weave your way up the stairwell to see all sides of this hanging 3-D three-story bee and flower installation created by local artist Dag Weiser. Crafted, cut, and colored by Dag Weiser, a local multi-media artist who has been making larger than life artworks out of recycled cardboard for over 40 years. In the 1950s and 1960s, laws, and the great majority of the general public were aligned against LGBTQ+ people. They were “in the closet.”. The 1960s and 1970s were atime of

In 1931 Seacliff was established as a California State Beach, one of the first. By 1937 a beach club was built.
