The lower level of the Schaulager exhibition area houses the monumental Rattenkönig (1993), by the sculptor Katharina Fritsch (*1956), and the complex installation Untitled (1995—1997), by Robert Gober (*1954). Two large rooms for these works were included from the outset, in close cooperation with the artists, in the plansfor the building.
ARCHITECTURE
The polygonal shape of the building's exterior is a pragmatic response to the shape of the site. With its solid, closed appearance, giving no outward indication of the division of the floors, the building has a protective air, evoking permanence and stability. CONCEPT | SCHAULAGER Schaulager is a place of dialogue and exchange. It holds regular exhibitions, accompanied by catalogues, for a wider audience. The exhibitions, often devoted to an individual artist, approach their subject with sensitivity and restraint.EXHIBITIONS

Since 2003, over 20 publications have appeared in connection with exhibitions and events at Schaulager. Bruce Nauman’s largest neon piece, One Hundred Live and Die (1984), located on the lower floor, glints at us from afar like a huge advertising billboard. A total of 100 brightly colored three-word sentences span the arc between life and death. Many of the works that entered the collection early on – such as those by Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee, Max Ernst or Hans Arp – now rank among the classics ofModernism.

Schaulager is located outside the centre of Basel, in the immediate vicinity of a new cultural district with workshops and studios, service businesses, storehouses and exhibition spaces. The Academy of Art and Design is also housed in the new quarter, which occupies a former industrial estate, the Dreispitz area on the southern outskirtsof Basel.
LAURENZ FOUNDATION
Laurenz Foundation. Schaulager is made possible by the Laurenz Foundation, which was established in 1999 by Maja Oeri and her husband Hans U. Bodenmann in memory of their first-born son Laurenz Jakob, who died an untimely death. First and foremost, the Laurenz Foundation is devoted to the promotion and support of the fine arts. The sculpture Selbstturm; Löwenturm , by Dieter Roth (1930–1998), standing in the room adjacent to the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, seems uncanny, yet familiar, like a mass of memories that have fallen out of time. The lower level of the Schaulager exhibition area houses the monumental Rattenkönig (1993), by the sculptor Katharina Fritsch (*1956), and the complex installation Untitled (1995—1997), by Robert Gober (*1954). Two large rooms for these works were included from the outset, in close cooperation with the artists, in the plansfor the building.

CONCEPT | SCHAULAGER The Schaulager concept. Schaulager, administered by the Laurenz Foundation, combines the functions of storing, studying and presenting modern and contemporary art. Since 2003, over 20 publications have appeared in connection with exhibitions and events at Schaulager. The range of publications, mainly in German and English, includes comprehensive and lavishly illustrated exhibition catalogues, artists' books, meticulously researched catalogues raisonnés, collections of texts and records of symposia held at Schaulager.PROTECTIVE MEASURES
Protective measures for research visits and tours for children and young people. Guided tours are permitted for all age groups. The maximum group size per tour is limited to 15 people.
