INSTANT POT
Finally having some money, we bought an Instant Pot when it was on sale a few weeks ago. I find a lot of online recipes for using the IP, but not really any that cant be done alternately or better in the crock pot / stove / oven. THE INAPPROPRIATE HOMESCHOOLER Greetings Fellow Homeschoolers! I recently started a blog, The Inappropriate Homeschooler, as I am a secular homeschooler living inthe Deep South! Co
WHAT ARE YOU DOING (OR HAVE YOU DONE) FOR EIGHTH GRADE? My daughter did three quarters on campus at an academically accelerated charter school for 7th, and was going to move to our regular public middle school for 8th (the charter was violating her 504 and I ran out of fight!) but now has decided she wants one more year at home before attending our local public high school.ART APPRECIATION
This year I decided to go with Harmony Fine Arts for our art appreciation curriculum, in part because it fit our budget and in part because I didn't have the brain cells left to come up with that one onmy own this year.

Published on 10-24-2019 01:36 AMSo,
you, a non-science parent gave birth to a science nerd! They are crazy about science, whether it is mixing chemicals or studying the birth of a planet… it makes them giddy. Yet the thought of turning your kitchen into a science experimentturns
your stomach. I get it. Don’t panic. You CAN successfully homeschoolscience.
You have choices.
* If you have a self-taught, self-led kiddo, give them some books,
buy the supplies and stand back. Make sure THEY clean up their mess. Step in when needed for a question but otherwise, they got it on theirown.
* You can start small and slowly work your way up until they can do it on their own. There are a lot of fun and easy books to get started. You can even join a subscription service and get a science kit with everything you need(instructions, supplies, equipment) once a month. You can also find simple kits at craft stores. * You can find a homeschool co-op in your area that has a science teacher. Drop them off once or twice a week and someone else can dealwith it.
* You can ask around within your homeschool groups if there is a science teacher or parent that would LOVE to teach them. Trade off either childcare services or teaching services(what subject is yourforte?).
* Does your spouse or partner or another family member like science?
Would they be willing to teach the kids? Even once a month would keep a science kid happy! * If none of the above pan out, I suggest finding a middle ground. Teach them some science but only within what you feel comfortable with. Do you like cooking or baking? Use it as science,
think how Alton Brown of Good Eats teaches. Science. Like hiking? Turn that into a science nature walk. Look for
spores, animals, foliage and research online once you get home. Science. Enjoy watching the stars? Grab some charts and study thestars . Science.
Science doesn’t always have to mean mixing chemicals to create a explosion or the typical science fair volcano. Science is all around us and even if you are not a “Science” person, you can teach science. To me, it is like anything else homeschool oriented…. You have to find your groove and what works for you and yours. SCIENCE IS ALL AROUND US!by

Published on 10-28-2019 12:16 AM Science has always intrigued me and is my favorite part of our homeschool day!I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist, until I realized while I loved the science part.... I sucked at swimming and masks on my face freak me out..... ummmm, kind of a requirement!LOL So instead, I passed on my love of science to my boys! And if you get really creative, homeschool science can be EVERY part of your school day! Math, History, Language Arts, Writing, Socialization, Spelling and Reading are ALL included in Science. Science is EXPENSIVE you say?! WRONG! Many tools for science can be found in your house RIGHT NOW! Yes, you can go hog wild crazy at Steve Spangler website and buy all the cool things or zip to your local teacher store and pay thru the nose BUT with a little creativity you can use items you have at already OR head to the thrift store and get substitutions for pennies....especially if you are doing experiments that might otherwise ruin your everyday household items! Think outside the box! There are books galore on science experiments for fun, for kids, for boys, for girls, for blowing things up(yes, there is a book for this) and for anything in between! And you don't have to limit it to things that take experiments! Science is all around us every day! Everything can become science. ...Read More

Published on 10-23-2019 01:56 AM October is Science month and this month is all about the pumpkin. You cannot go anywhere without finding pumpkins for sale. Heck, even our big-box hardware store has them. Even if you don’t celebrate Halloween, you can snag a pumpkin and turn it into a learning experience. Never has one squash offered so much educational value for a low price. Stand back and be prepared for PUMPKIN SCIENCE! First, some pumpkin history . They are believed to have originated in North America and seeds have been found in Mexico as far back at 7000-5500 BC. We have loved this squash for a VERY LONG TIME. Native Americans used every bit of the pumpkin and it wasn’t just for eating. Settlers were introduced to them and they soon became a staple in every home. There are at least 45 varieties of pumpkin, ranging in size from tiny teacup to as large as a SMART car. Not all are edible. Morton, Illinoisis the
self-proclaimed pumpkin capital of the world with 90-95% of its crops being pumpkins. THAT is a lot of pumpkin(click
this link for fun ideas for the pumpkin patch). 5 FUN PUMPKIN FACTS:* Pumpkins
(click
this link for Fall learning activities inc. pumpkins) are 90% water * 80% of the pumpkin supply is available in October * Pumpkins are a member of the Cucurbita family which includes squashand cucumbers
* Pumpkins contain potassium and Vitamin A * Pumpkin flowers are edible...
