INSTANT POT
Finally having some money, we bought an Instant Pot when it was on sale a few weeks ago. I find a lot of online recipes for using the IP, but not really any that cant be done alternately or better in the crock pot / stove / oven. THE INAPPROPRIATE HOMESCHOOLER Greetings Fellow Homeschoolers! I recently started a blog, The Inappropriate Homeschooler, as I am a secular homeschooler living inthe Deep South! Co
ART APPRECIATION
This year I decided to go with Harmony Fine Arts for our art appreciation curriculum, in part because it fit our budget and in part because I didn't have the brain cells left to come up with that one onmy own this year.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING (OR HAVE YOU DONE) FOR EIGHTH GRADE? My daughter did three quarters on campus at an academically accelerated charter school for 7th, and was going to move to our regular public middle school for 8th (the charter was violating her 504 and I ran out of fight!) but now has decided she wants one more year at home before attending our local public high school.INSTANT POT

* General Homeschooling Welcome to our first Science Project of the Month Series! Each month Secular Homeschool will feature a science project that you can do with your homeschoolers. Whether you are “sciency” or not, these will be easy, fun and perfect to do as a family. I will include several fun facts that coincide with the featured project, so for homeschool, we can pull double duty and learn something while we do science. February is Dental Health Month, so naturally, we are doing a dental health experiment for kids. February is all about hearts, valentines, and chocolate. It always struck me as hilarious that it is also dental health month. I wonder if dentists voted it in because of the vast amount of candy given and consumed on Valentine’s Day? Dental health is no laughing matter. Our teeth are important for more than just chewing. Talking, smiling, laughing all work better with teeth. Teeth are also connected with the rest of our body and issues within our body can show up in our teeth and vice versa. Pretty amazing how connected the human body is! Check out how different things we drink affect our teeth below using our Tooth Health Science Project of the Month. SCIENCE PROJECT: TOOTH DECAY EXPERIMENT - EGG SCRUB Age Level: Preschool-High SchoolITEMS NEEDED:
* 1 cup soda/cola/pop (whatever you call it in your neck of the woods!), make sure it’sdark brown such as root beer or a cola* 1 cup vinegar
* 1 cup water
* 1 cup fruit juice (more acidic such as orange juice or lemonadework better)
* 4 hard-boiled eggs * 1-4 toothbrushes (you can wash and reuse the same toothbrush or have a clean one for each liquid) * 4 plastic cups (make sure they are deep enough to hold a whole egg and liquid with the egg 100% submerged) * Toothpaste or baking soda* Paper towels
* Egg carton or egg holderDIRECTIONS
* Fill each cup with each liquid. Do not overfill; remember to leave room for water displacement with the egg addition. * Put 1 egg in each cup carefully so you don’t crack the shell. Make sure it is completely submerged and covered by the liquid. * Leave this overnight. Be aware that some liquids (vinegar for example) can start to dissolve the shell the longer they are left in but that is another experiment for another day. * Remember to note which liquids are in which containers, though you can probably use your senses to figure this out. * While you are waiting, hypothesize what will happen with each liquid. Write these down. You can do as a group or have each child make their own hypothesis and then compare. * Next morning, assemble water, toothpaste, and toothbrush(es). * Carefully remove each egg and place it in an egg holder or carton. Observe, discuss, and note what the liquid did to the egg and shells. * Try to remove the liquid and residue using plain water and a toothbrush. Did it work? Why? Why not? * Move onto water, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Did it work? Why? Whynot?
* Note what each shell looked, felt and smelled like. Discuss why you think this might have happened. Chat about what could happen if this experiment was applied to their teeth. Discuss the importance of brushing teeth, removing plaque, keeping gums and our body healthy by eating and drinking things that are better for our teeth. You can wrap it up with a shopping trip to pick out new toothbrushes and toothpaste. Don’t forget the floss! OTHER LIQUID SUGGESTIONS* Coffee
* Tea, try several different types* Clear soda
* Dark juice, like grape or prune* Energy drink
* Milk
* Vegetable juice
* Alcohol
PERSONAL UPDATE:
We had a great time doing this. Both my childcare kids and my own kids enjoyed this experiment. I kept it simple for the little kids and for homeschool we added in red wine and beer to test in, plus the other liquids listed. My counter was covered in cups for about 12 hours. It was a great way to see the importance of brushing teeth and fun to see how the liquids affected the eggs and/or shells. The effects of vinegar and red wine were family favorites.FUN DENTAL FACTS
* The average American spends 38.5 total days brushing their teeth in their lifetime. That is a lot of toothpaste! * Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. * Flossing takes care of 40% of the tooth surface. * If you are right-handed, you will chew your food on the right side. If you are left-handed, you will chew your foot on the left side. No idea what it means if you are ambidextrous like me. Most of you are testing this theory right now. * Tongue prints are like fingerprints, each one is different and unique. Most of you are now looking at your tongue in the mirror and comparing it to family members. * Dental floss was first manufactured for sale in 1882. * Dental plaque contains more than 300 types of bacteria. Ewwww! * More people use blue toothbrushes than red ones. Most of you are in the bathroom looking at the toothbrushes, checking this fact. * Dogs have 42 teeth. Cats have 30 teeth. Most of your kids are considering checking out the pet’s teeth right now. Do so carefully. February is pet dental health month too! * A single can of soda contains 10-12 teaspoons of sugar. Great way to find out how do sugary drinks affect your teeth * The recommended brushing time is 2-3 minutes. Most people do halfof that time.
* Ancient Greeks used talc, alabaster, iron rust, coral powder or pumice as toothpaste. * Earliest known dentist by name is Hesi-Re and he lived in Egypt over 5,000 years ago.

* General Homeschooling BREAK OUT OF THE FEBRUARY/MARCH HOMESCHOOL SLUMP WITH A FEW EASY IDEAS FROM SECULAR HOMESCHOOL. WHY DO WE GET HOMESCHOOL BURNOUT? February/March is upon us and along with overcast skies, rain, sickness…. comes the homeschool slump. Yes, the slump. It is a real thing. January brings us back from Winter Break, refreshed, renewed, and ready to jump into it. February/March brings the slump also called homeschool mom burnout. We have been cooped up, whether from weather or sickness. We are missing the fresh air and sunshine. We are all tired. The curriculum has lost its bloom. Parents are tired of fighting kids who would rather be attached to a screen. Most homeschoolers get it. It may happen in February, it may happen in March but it happens. We lose that zest for homeschooling and just want to be done for the year. It happens in our house all the time. You would think that I would be used to it since we have been homeschooling since 2008… but nope. Usually the first few days of grumpiness, I assume they are getting sick or extra tired. Or that I have an attitude. Then I remember what month it is. Slump month.*Sigh*
How do we get over it? How do you get over it? Let me tell you my secrets and hopefully, some will help you. Grab a cup, put your feet up and we will work this homeschool burnout out together and get us ALL over the February/March slump. 11 WAYS TO BEAT THE HOMESCHOOL SLUMP * Change up your day. Easiest way. Rearrange your curriculum day. If you homeschool in the morning, try having a lazy morning and school in the afternoon. If you have a set schedule for the order you do subjects, change it up. Put all subjects in a jar and let kids pick the order daily. This gets them involved and breaks up the doldrums. * Find some new activities. You may not be able to get outside with the weather but check out your local community center for fun classes. Try something new. Sign-up for a cooking class together. Get out of the house and learn something different, together or as individuals. * Switch with another homeschool family. Once a week, trade kids and teach them. New parent/teacher and new learning style. Or you can just switch up to teach your specialty. You do math well while your friend loves cooking. Teach her kids math while she teaches yours a new recipe.
* Buy a new curriculum.
While many are happy with their current curriculum and stick with it, others are less than thrilled. Change it up. No rule says you can’t change curriculum mid-year to suit your homeschool needs. * Change up your homeschool area. A little paint does wonders for an area. Perks it up. Add in some new shelving or organizationalcarts.
Even educational posters can revamp it. Make this a family activity and have the kids help you figure out how much paint you will need or if the new shelf will fit.* Get physical
.
Add movement and exercise to your day while learning. An indoor trampoline or jumping jacks while reciting spelling words. Jump rope while counting. You can even tape out hopscotch on your kitchen floor with math problems or spelling words within the squares. * Turn to life skills.
Put your regular homeschool routine on the back burner and work on life skills. Do some pre-spring cleaning. Teach them how to clean the toilet or wipe the baseboards and why it needs to be done. Bake some bread together. Learn about paying bills or even how to do taxes! * Live in an overcast area? Installing daylight full spectrum bulbs can help the mood. They produce the same spectrum as natural daylight, therefore enhancing our mood, helping our body think it is still in the spring/summer. Helping our mood, helps us break out of the slump. You can even turn learning about Seasonal Affective Disorder into a homeschool lesson. Homeschool win-win. * Turn simple everyday tasks into homeschool lessons. Grocery store trip? Have the kids write the list: writing, and spelling.✔ At the store, have them read the list: reading.✔ Have them figure out the best deal between brands: math.✔ If they are curious about new food, have them write it down and then research at home to learn more about it: writing, research, and history. ✔And guess what, the whole process builds life skills too. * Find a penpal. So many homeschool groups host or have parents looking for penpals. You can even find foreign penpals. Have your children practice their writing and spelling skills while connectingwith a new friend.
* If all else fails. ESCAPE. Hop in the car and take a drive. Discover new areas in your town. Make sure to drive on streets that are new to you, observe new areas, visit a new-to-you park. When you get home, have your homeschoolers journal about it. What did they see? What did they like the most? Hate the most? We have discovered so many new things in our city by doing this. Hopefully, some of these ideas have helped you break-up your February/March slump aka homeschool mom burnout and make it through. Soon, warmer, sunnier days will be upon us and we will move our learning outside to soak up the much-needed vitamin D. Until then we will be changing up our routine a bit to get us out of this funk.WHAT WILL YOU DO?

* General Homeschooling Arts and Crafts Project of the Month February Edition: NO COOK CHOCOLATE PLAYDOUGH RECIPE Welcome to our first Arts and Craft Project of the Month Series! Each month Secular Homeschool will feature an art or craft project that you can do with your homeschoolers. Whether you are artsy or not, these will be easy, fun and perfect to do as a family. I will include several fun facts that coincide with the featured project, so for homeschool, we can pull double duty and learn something while we craft. This month let’s explore Homemade No Cook Chocolate Playdough. We’re using a DIY no cook method which makes it easy and safe for any age level to get involved. Who doesn’t love the smell of chocolate? The sensory aspect of chocolate alone has proven to be memory inducing, and what a great memory to give your children! We all associate February with Valentine’s Day. Chocolate and Valentine’s seem to go hand in hand. So we’ll kick off this Arts & Crafts series with a seasonal flavor: chocolate! That’s right, this is a scented playdough recipe. If you don’t love chocolate, no worries. I will include a substitutebelow.
Ok, here’s how to make our homemade playdough! NO COOK CHOCOLATE HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH RECIPEINGREDIENTS
* 2 cups all-purpose flour * 1 cup salt (does not matter if iodized, plain, etc.) * ½ cup of cocoa powder * 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil (FYI: 4 tablespoons is the same ascup)
* 1 cup boiling water (you can use cold water but you will not get as smooth a mix; it tends to stay drier) * 1 teaspoon food/flavor extract (optional) * Use options that pair well with chocolate like vanilla, mint, lemonor raspberry
* 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (optional) - used as a preservative and only needed if you are storing long-term. (I don’t plan on storing mine. House of sick kids means it is a one-and-done batch for me.) If you are wondering how to store this playdough, I recommend an air-tight zip top bag or plastic container with a lid.
INSTRUCTIONS
_Total Prep Time: 10 minutes_
* Add flour, salt, cocoa to a medium bowl, whisking together. Add cream of tartar at this point if you choose to use it. * Carefully add the oil and extract (if using) to the hot water. Stir to incorporate. (I added vanilla because that is what I had on hand. Next time I want to try mint.) * Pour the hot water mixture into the dry ingredients. * Stir together. You can add an additional teaspoon of oil if needed (I did). I then tossed my wooden spoon and used my hands to mix it more into a solid mass. * Remove from the bowl, place on a floured board and knead until a soft, elastic dough forms. This takes several minutes. Now, I am not gonna lie, it doesn’t look appealing. It smells great but it looks like, well, cow manure. I ended up adding 2 more teaspoons of oil while kneading as mine felt dry. When done, I put it in a gallon sealed plastic bag to rest until playtime. I would personally recommend this--let it sit for at least 30 min. It got more pliable asit rested.
* Use as you would regular playdough. You can decorate with Valentine sprinkles, cut into fun shapes or anything your imagination desires. * Not recommended for eating, despite that it smells yummy. Don’t worry if someone does consume some. All ingredients are safe and used for baking. It tastes very salty and unappealing. PERSONAL NOTE: We sat down to play with it, approx. 4 hours after it was made. It had resided in the sealed plastic bag the whole time. It was slightly crumbly, so I added more oil, kneaded in and handed it off to the kids. I think next time, I will add more oil and knead it in 1-2x before we play with it. Just to prevent the crumbles. NON-CHOCOLATE SUBSTITUTION * Omit cocoa powder (CP) * Substitute the ½ cup CP with a mixture of flour and ground cinnamon to equal ½ cup. Adjust to your likeness. Reminder: cinnamon can be strong to the senses so less is better. I suggest adding a little at a time. You can always add more to the kneading flour if notstrong enough.
FUN FACTS ABOUT CHOCOLATE * Chocolate has been around about 2,000 years, though many historians think longer as evidence suggests closer to 4,000 years. * Chocolate is made from the fruit of the cacao trees. (Does this mean chocolate is a fruit, and therefore can be counted in my daily diet?!LOL) The fruits are called pods, each pod contains about 40 cacao beans. These beans are then dried and roasted to create what we know as cocoa beans. This is NOT the chocolate we are used to eating and in fact is quite bitter. * Hot cocoa as we know it, was not how it started. Think more along the lines of black coffee using cocoa beans. It was dark and bitter and used for rituals, preparing for war and an aphrodisiac. Not my cupof cocoa.
* Cortes brought it to Spain and they mixed it with sugar and honey, therefore starting the path towards chocolate we know and love. * 1828 the chocolate pres was invented, giving us the ability to separate the cocoa butter and leaving behind cocoa powder. * Most known kinds of chocolate are milk, semi-sweet, dark andbittersweet.
* White chocolate is not actual chocolate. It contains cocoa butter but no chocolate solids. FUN FACTS ABOUT PLAY-DOH * Play-doh was created in the 1930s as a wallpaper cleaner. Yep, you read that right. Weird! * It was reworked and marketed to schools in the late 1950s. * It premiered at the 1956 educational convention (Educational conventions were a thing even back then, cool.) and was picked up by several prominent department stores. * In 2003, it was added to the “Toys of the Century” list put out by the Toy Industry Association. * More than 2 billion cans were sold between 1955 and 2005. * Sold in 75 countries. * According to Hasbro, it mainly consists of salt, water, and flour with a few other preserving ingredients. * As demonstrated in the recipe above, you can create homemade playdough in both cooked and no cook form. SecularHomeschool.com was created to provide information, resources, and a place to share and connect with secular homeschoolers across the world. Secularhomeschool.com aims to be your one-stop shop for all things homeschool! We will be highlighting information about wonderful secular homeschool resources, and keeping you up to date with what is going on in the world of secular homeschooling. But that is only the beginning. SHS is your playground. A place to share the things that are important to you. A place to create and join groups that share your interests. A place to give and get advice. There are no limits to what you can do at Secular Homeschool, so join today and help build the community you have always wanted. SecularHomeschool.com is a community and information source where secular homeschoolers ARE the majority. It is the home for non-religious homeschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers, freethinking homeschoolers AND anyone interested in homeschooling irrespective of religion. This site is an INCLUSIVE community that recognizes that homeschoolers choose secular homeschool materials and resources for a variety of reasons and to accomplish a variety of personal and educational goals. Although SecularHomeschool.com, and its members, have worked hard to compile a comprehensive directory of secular curricula, it does not attest that all materials advertised on our site, in our newsletters, or on our social media profiles are 100% secular. Rather, SecularHomeschool.com respects the aptitude of each individual homeschool parent to fully research any curriculum before acquiring it, to ensure that it holistically meets the educational, personal, and philosophical goals of each homeschooler.LINKS
