JAMES PATON
James Paton. A pre-oil Lerwegian with a fantastic childhood growing up in Shetland, regular visits to the museum stirred and unleashed the imagination and fascination with 'our story'. The Pictish, Viking and sea-faring traditions ( my Dad was a Sooth- ice whaler) especially so. Extensive community volunteering during a short time in the oil OFF THE BEATEN TRACK 11 Off the Beaten Track 11 - In search of Brochs. Brochs are the best known of Shetland’s prehistoric remains and Mousa is regarded as iconic throughout Scotland. In spite of their popularity, brochs are still shrouded in mystery. Archaeologists discovered that Old Scatness was built between 400-200 BC, earlier than previously thought. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK 7 The walks this week take in Viking (and Norse) soapstone quarries. Soapstone is a form of steatite which is also known as talc. It is quarried commercially at Clibberswick, Unst as industrial talc, used for lubricating machinery and making fertiliser amongst other things. Shetland’s talc isn’t pure enough to become cosmetic talc. SHETLAND AMENITY TRUST Welcome. DA VOAR REDD UP POSTPONED The Shetland Amenity Trust have announced that Da Voar Redd Up will be postponed until later in the year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The annual event which is now in its 33rd year was due to take place from the 25th to 26th April with an anticipated 4,500 volunteers cleaning up Shetland’s beaches and roadside verges. It is hoped that the event will now take place in the Autumn but the organisers are still encouraging people to pick up litter whilst they are out andabout.
