CRUISE SHIP MAGELLAN TO BE SCRAPPED 2nd February 2021. After acquiring the former CMV cruise ship Magellan at auction for $3.4 million, new owner Seajets have sent the former Carnival Cruise Line ship for scrap in India. The 1985-built, 1,452-guest ship now appears to be heading to India, where she will be beached and scrapped, joining former fleet mate Marco Polo. WORLD'S LARGEST LIVESTOCK CARRIER Australian live export company Wellard has positioned what is claimed to be the world’s largest purpose-designed and -built livestock carrier, the 36,028gt Ocean Shearer, into the Australian trade after the vessel was granted an Interim Australian Certificate for the Carriage of Livestock by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. SUEZ CANAL BLOCKED BY GROUNDED EVERGREEN 24th March 2021. On 24 March 2021 the Suez Canal was closed following the grounding of a fully laden Evergreen 20,388TEU containership, which blocked one of the world’s most important waterways causing a massive backlog of shipping. Louisiana’s Port of New Orleans, severely damaged by hurricane Katrina in 2005, has rebounded positively since the hurricane and handled a record number of container ships towards the end of 2010, when 43 vessels called in a single month. On 24 March 2021 the Suez Canal was closed following the grounding of a fully laden Evergreen 20,388TEU containership, which blocked one of the world’s most important waterways causing a massive backlog of shipping. LAST OF THE CMV FLAGGED CRUISE SHIPS ASTORIA LEAVES AND 23rd November 2020. Attempts to tow away the former CMV cruise ship Astoria from the Thames were made on 23 November 2020. She initially set off at 0700 from Tower Wharf, Northfleet, under tow by the tug Brent, with SD Dolphin, RT Ambition and Svitzer Vidar in attendance. A previous attempt to tow the cruise ship away, involving the tug Monte CAR CARRIER GRANDE EUROPA IN TROUBLE AGAIN 7th December 2020. Grimaldi Lines Grande Europa (1998/51,714gt) suffered complete loss of power early on Sunday 29 November while she was en route for Southampton from Antwerp. WORLD'S LARGEST LIVESTOCK CARRIER Australian live export company Wellard has positioned what is claimed to be the world’s largest purpose-designed and -built livestock carrier, the 36,028gt Ocean Shearer, into the Australian trade after the vessel was granted an Interim Australian Certificate for the Carriage of Livestock by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. SS UNITED STATES: WILLIAM FRANCIS GIBBS’ SUPERLINER The German liner Vaterland was seized in the US and renamed USS Leviathan, which served as a troopship towards the end of the war. From late 1919 Gibbs and his team reverse-engineered drawings from a detailed physical inspection of the ship. As Leviathan, she went on to become a United States Line ocean liner between 1923 and 1933. REMEMBERING P&O FERRIES CLASSIC FERRY PRIDE OF YORK 18th March 2021.
