KELHAM ISLAND MUSEUM Kelham Island Museum was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield’s industrial story. Our interactive galleries tell the story from light trades and skilled workmanship to mass production and what it was like to live ABBEYDALE INDUSTRIAL HAMLET Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a unique eighteenth century industrial works. Catch a glimpse of life at home and at work at a rural scythe and steelworks dating back to the 18th century. Abbeydale Works was once a producer of agricultural tools and the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. TOOL INDUSTRY COLLECTION The toolmaking industry collection is a comprehensive representation of Sheffield's toolmaking industries and includes finished items which are tools in their own right and the tools and equipment required to manufacture them. The collection is estimated at 2000 items. Notable aspects include material from the saw and file industries.KELHAM ISLAND
The Island and surrounding area is one of Sheffield’s eleven designated quarters. A great deal of regeneration has taken place and many of the old factories and workshops are now cafes, artist studios, houses and apartments surrounded by award winning restaurants and the ‘valley of beer’ because of array of real ale pubs andmicro-breweries.

At Museum Youth you can have your say by coming up with exciting ideas then researching, developing and delivering them into projects for the museum! HLF RESTORATION PROJECT HLF Restoration Project. The Friends of the Porter Valley were instrumental in organising the 2010-12 conservation project, which involved the dredging and repair of the dam (including installing a liner), repair works to the buildings, and the restoration of the pentrough, water wheel and all internal machinery.CROSSLEY GAS ENGINE
Crossley Gas Engine Kelham Island Museum . The Crossley Gas Engine was made by Crossley Brothers Ltd in Manchester in 1915. It drove a small rod and bar rolling mill on Penistone Road belonging to George Clarke and it remained in use at the rolling mill in Sheffield until 1970. FIRTH BROWN PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION Firth Brown Photographic Collection. The Firth Brown Photographic collection is worthy of particular mention. The collection consists of approximately 21,000 images from the archives of the famous steel manufacturers and innovators Firth-Brown. The fast flowing water of Sheffield’s streams, together with ready availability of raw materials, resulted in Sheffield's industrial development from an early date, water being the main source of power for the early cutlery industry for which the city becameworld famous.
THE HAWLEY GALLERY
The Hawley Gallery opened in 2010 as the first permanent display space for the Hawley Collection. This world-renowned tool collection has been amassed since the mid 1950s by former tool retailer and champion of Sheffield’s industrial heritage, Ken Hawley, and consists of over 100,000 objects, all relating to Sheffield’s tool, cutlery manufacturing and silversmithing industry.CUTLERY COLLECTION
The cutlery industry collection at Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust consists of approximately 1000 items of materials, tools and equipment used in the manufacture of cutlery and other similar edged products such as surgical instruments. BENJAMIN HUNTSMAN CLOCK Benjamin Huntsman Clock. The Benjamin Huntsman Clock was the first object to contain crucible cast steel. The first object to contain Crucible Cast Steel, this longcase clock was made in the 1740s by Benjamin Huntsman, the inventor of crucible steel. Inside the clock's case is a large, rectangular slab of steel, its description on theoriginal
DAVY BROTHERS OF SHEFFIELD Born in Keighley, David, Dennis and Joseph Davy began as millwrights. They set up a business at Lady’s Bridge in Sheffield in 1830. The dream was to make steam engines and in 1840 they built the first railway locomotive in Sheffield – the first train service from Sheffield to London was pulled by a Davy locomotive.ROY RIDSDALE
This together with a long standing interest in the industrial heritage of Sheffield and my art and design education (at the Royal College of Art, London), led me to resurrect this interest as an artist, and took me to Kelham Island Museum and The Hawley Tool Collection, also based at the Museum. The museum and collections staff facilitated MUSEUM’S JOURNEY TOWARDS INCLUSIVE ACCESS Over 150 visitors enjoyed a free and inclusive Open Day and Access Conference at Kelham Island Museum on Saturday 11 March as part of Disabled Access Day 2017. BESSEMER CONVERTER
The Bessemer Converter is one of only three converters left in the world. It was used by the British Steel Corporation in Workington until 1974/5 and produced the last Bessemer Steel made in Britain in 1974. It was brought to the Museum in 1978 as an example of the revolutionary steelmaking process which first took off in Sheffield. LITTLE MESTERS STREET Only a handful of Little Mesters’ remain in Sheffield today, two can still be seen working on the reconstructed Little Mesters’ Street at the museum, other workshops can be found at Portland Works. On the street you can also find equipment used by the Little Mesters, tools made by Sheffield makers, as well as The Hawley Collection Saw Shop. BRAMAH PRESS
The Bramah Press is a hydraulic pressing machine made by Joseph Bramah and Co, London in the early 1800s. Joseph Bramah was a brilliant engineer and inventor and the hydraulic press was his most famous invention. Presses were used for jobs such as flattening or compressing paper, cloth and steel and before the Bramah press, mostwere wooden.

The Bessemer Converter is one of only three converters left in the world. It was used by the British Steel Corporation in Workington until 1974/5 and produced the last Bessemer Steel made in Britain in 1974. Crossley Gas Engine Kelham Island Museum . The Crossley Gas Engine was made by Crossley Brothers Ltd in Manchester in 1915. It drove a small rod and bar rolling mill on Penistone Road belonging to George Clarke and it remained in use at the rolling mill in Sheffield until 1970.BRAMAH PRESS
The Bramah Press is a hydraulic pressing machine made by Joseph Bramah and Co, London in the early 1800s. Joseph Bramah was a brilliant engineer and inventor and the hydraulic press was his most famous invention. Presses were used for jobs such as flattening or compressing paper, cloth and steel and before the Bramah press, mostwere wooden.

ABBEYDALE INDUSTRIAL HAMLET Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a unique eighteenth century industrial works. Catch a glimpse of life at home and at work at a rural scythe and steelworks dating back to the 18th century. Abbeydale Works was once a producer of agricultural tools and the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. KELHAM ISLAND MUSEUM Kelham Island Museum was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield’s industrial story. Our interactive galleries tell the story from light trades and skilled workmanship to mass production and what it was like to liveKELHAM ISLAND
The Island and surrounding area is one of Sheffield’s eleven designated quarters. A great deal of regeneration has taken place and many of the old factories and workshops are now cafes, artist studios, houses and apartments surrounded by award winning restaurants and the ‘valley of beer’ because of array of real ale pubs andmicro-breweries.
