The Skwachàys' Story. Skwachàys (pronounced skwatch-eyes) Lodge and Residence at 29 West Pender Street in Vancouver is a unique enterprise created by the social housing organization Vancouver Native Housing Society. The building houses a fair trade Indigenous Art Gallery, Boutique Hotel, and an Urban Indigenous Artist Residence. HISTORY | SKWACHÀYS LODGE Skwachàys History. In the Fall of 2012, a few months after Skwachàys Lodge and Gallery opened, Jon Zwickel, president of InnVentures Hospitality Corp. visited the Gallery. Coincidentally, David Eddy was there. Dave is CEO of the Vancouver Native Housing Society (VNHS), the not-for-profit society that owns the Hotel and Gallery.CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Skwachàys has a traditional First Nations Sweat Lodge and offers private Sweat Lodge Purification Ceremonies, which are lead by a Sweat Lodge Keeper, who adheres to Indigenous traditions.. The Sweat Lodge, located in the rooftop garden, is a domed structure that symbolizes Mother Nature’s womb.It is constructed from inter-woven willow branches. Skwachàys Lodge is located at the crossroads of Vancouver’s historic Gastown, Chinatown and Railtown districts in a neighbourhood known as the Downtown Eastside (DTES). Originally conceived in 2008 as an on-line project to view our neighbourhood through the eyes of Aboriginal artists and increase the First Nations cultural content, the project has matured into a fine-art gallery dedicated to sharing and promoting the artistic and cultural work of the Vancouver’s Urban Aboriginal community. GATHERING SPACE
The Welcome Room is a space where the Skwachàys Lodge community can come together to connect, create memories and share a meal. Breakfast and light fare are offered, along with regional wines and Canadian craft beers. To establish this sense of community, the Porada Design team focused the design of the space on the local artist Eric Parnell ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE The Artists in Residence opportunity at Skwachàys Lodge is a unique and life-changing housing program for practicing Indigenous artists. This includes subsidized housing in clean, unfurnished bachelor suites, 24/7 access to shared artist workshops, and access to programming opportunities for personal and professional development that help artists develop their craft and move into the next WATER ROOM | SKWACHÀYS LODGE constant flow of running water. Rounded edges and curved lines in the décor and furniture evoke the fluidity of moving streams and rivers. Wooden elements, such as the headboard, countertop and side tables, have been left in their natural state to ground the space and remind us of the connection water has with our forested surroundings. The headboard, one giant slab of wood with its edges AIR ROOM | SKWACHÀYS LODGE The Air Room Story. The Raven’s image, soaring across the headboard, and the Eagle, winking down playfully from its perch, were chosen by artist Corrine Hunt to represent the Air Room. To further denote the fundamental relationship First Nations have with the Salmon, Hill designed a custom salmon weir installation.LONGHOUSE ROOM
Modern in design but traditional in inspiration, each artistic piece within the Longhouse Suite pays tribute to traditional customs in Northwest Coast Aboriginal society. Inspired by artist Sabina Hill’s contemporary take on classic Aboriginal motifs, Inside Design Studio. created the Longhouse Room to showcase her elegant, architecturalpieces.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE Gastown, established in 1867, is the historic and cultural heart of Vancouver. MOON ROOM | SKWACHÀYS LODGE oversleeping guests as the guardian spirit. The circular bed frame was created to mirror the Moon and is book-ended by two raven nightstands. This placement symbolizes the iconic imagery of the Raven flying with the Moon in its beak, soon to be released into the sky.ABOUT SKWACHÀYS
Skwachàys (pronounced skwatch-eyes) Lodge and Residence at 29 West Pender Street in Vancouver is a unique enterprise created by the social housing organization Vancouver Native Housing Society. SUITES | SKWACHÀYS LODGE Skwachàys Lodge features 18 rooms that have been uniquely designed by six of Vancouver’s top hotel designers partnered with six Indigenous artists to created stunning art installations in every unit. In June 2018, Vancouver Native Housing Society proposed a series of engagements through the Creative City Strategy “Host Your Own Engagement” initiative. The objective of this project is to gather Indigenous arts and culture community leaders from the cross section of Contemporary arts that are created and produced in theNAME & LOGO
The Skwachàys Lodge logo is derived from an original work created by Eric Parnell, a Haida artist living in Vancouver. The original work was created for “Looking Forward, Looking Back,” a story-catching project that looked at Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside through the eyes of Indigenous artists.LONGHOUSE ROOM
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a striking feature wall representing a “house-front” with a human welcome figure. House-fronts in Northwest Coast society were traditionally decorated in carvings and painted colours, and this large-scale interpretation pays homage to this practice, symbolizing guests’ arrival at their temporary home and imparts a sense of comfort for weary travellers.PADDLE ROOM
Denoting the larger theme of the suite, Hill’s salmon weir installation greets guests at the entrance to space. Once up the stairs, the artists’ black and red paddle design has WATER ROOM | SKWACHÀYS LODGE constant flow of running water. Rounded edges and curved lines in the décor and furniture evoke the fluidity of moving streams and rivers. Wooden elements, such as the headboard, countertop and side tables, have been left in their natural state to ground the space and remind us of the connection water has with our forested surroundings. The headboard, one giant slab of wood with its edges AIR ROOM | SKWACHÀYS LODGE Incorporated into the body of both hummingbirds is the motif of a whale’s tail. Eagle down is traditionally used in smudging ceremonies to cleanse a space and spread peace around a room.FEATHER ROOM
