NEW CABIN. 22X 28
Cabin Forum/Blog: Hi all. Long message here. Will be frequenting this site for ideas- wish I would have found it sooner! Just thought I’d share my story thus far. I bought some land last year in way north MN on a water access only property. It’s Canadian Shield rock and am in the process of building a 22x28 cabin. Cabin will mostly be summer but I hope to get limited winter use as well.I COST TO EXTEND THE POWER GRID TO YOUR CABIN? The cost of material is about the same amount of money that goes to labor and trucks and that cost is the burden of the PC. So a 11,000.00 you can add 11,000.00 more for labor, trucks, easements and engineering costs which the PC pay that is never seen by the consumer. I would say a range from 4.00 to 8.00 bucks a foot depending on thearea you
USING GREEN LOGS
Cabin Forum/Blog: Is there any problems using center cut 8x8 green D logs when building a small cabin? we may not have time to get these dried all the way be fore the building starts at most maybe 1 year of air drying and a month in a solar kiln. So any thoughts? by the way not worried about shrinkage as this has been worked out. LAMINATE FLOORING IN UNHEATED CABIN Cabin Forum/Blog: My cabin is in Northern Ontario and like a lot of people here, I do not use my cabin in the winter and therefore it is unheated all winter. I need to put down flooring in an addition this coming season. We have have vinyl flooring before but it does not last very long before it cracks from the cold. Does anyone have any experience with laminate flooring in their unheated cabin?OUTHOUSE TANKS.
Cabin Forum/Blog: Someone discussed out house tanks on here in the past and I cant seem to find it now. Has anyone ever used or purchased a tank specifically designed for an outhouse type system? I cant seem to procure one either. Any help or alternative options would be welcomed. I want to put an out house closer to my well than I anticipated but fear ruining my water source even though I MAGGOTS IN THE OUTHOUSE Cabin Forum/Blog: Right. This is a sh!tty topic so I’m just going to get to it. We have a conventional pit toilet at our offgrid place. Been using one on this property for forty years. Not the same pit, mind you! I made a quick inspection this morning and noticed the surface is writhing in small maggots about 3/4cm long. I’ve never noticed maggots before in the pit or had a major nuisance BOARD AND BATTEN TO STAIN OR NOT TO STAIN? The Timber framed shed is board and batten, currently unfinished, only because it got cold and snowed before I managed to complete the building. In the spring, I will add colored stain so that this matches my house. In both cases the siding is 3/4" (True 3/4 cut on mill). Boards are 6" wide and the battens are 3" wide. ADDING SEPTIC/PLUMBING COST? Cabin Forum/Blog: Hi All - Very new here, so thanks for the input in advance. I m looking at purchasing a cabin with no indoor plumbing or septic (has outhouse). Personally, all I need is a bar of soap and the lake, but the wife is a little reticent about no shower or running water. Does anyone know the approximate cost of installing plumbing (i.e. running water/septic)? SMALL CABIN FORUMMEMBER'S PROJECTS AND PHOTOSHIDE THIS UNDER YOURBUNKIE

TRACTOR PLOW
Cabin Forum/Blog: My 76 F-250 plow truck blew a transmission seal so I had our daughter weld a bracket to the back of the bucket to attach an old western plow on to the bucket of my 1959 case 420b. I used a chain to bind it down so I had some downforce. I may add the angel controls for the blade. Cabin Forum/Blog: I m new here but am an old hand at off grid power systems and using them and I ve started a major tiny home project. I have a porch in northern Michigan we call the Shack. COST TO EXTEND THE POWER GRID TO YOUR CABIN? The cost of material is about the same amount of money that goes to labor and trucks and that cost is the burden of the PC. So a 11,000.00 you can add 11,000.00 more for labor, trucks, easements and engineering costs which the PC pay that is never seen by the consumer. _A COMPLETE 'DO-IT-YOURSELF' GUIDE ON HOW TO PLAN, BUILD AND ENJOY YOUR SMALL CABIN -- IN SIMPLE TERMS_ This web site is a collection of personal experiences and useful resources I have found when building my own SMALL CABIN in thewilderness.
I hope it will be useful for people who want to do the same - TO BUILD A SMALL CABIN ON THEIR OWN - so they will have a quiet retreat or hideaway spot to enjoy their weekend orvacation.
My family and I love the outdoors. We have enjoyed many camping and nature exploration trips, hiked trails, and visited nature conservation areas and wilderness parks. Building a small cabin in the wilderness was a natural extension of our outdoor pursuits. When I started to build my small cabin I searched for information, but could not find one concise, clear and complete guide on how to build a small cabin or a small cottage using only my own skills and resources. This web site aims to be such a guide. I DO NOT PROMOTE ANY CABIN BUILDING KIT, MATERIAL SUPPLIER, CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS OR SERVICE PROVIDER, but I will mention particular resources, tools and materials I used. I built my small cabin from scratch, using materials readily available from local building material suppliers, and without any special skills or training. But before I started, I did my research homework! Advance planning will save you time, effort, and money. MY MAIN OBJECTIVES WHEN BUILDING A SMALL CABIN WERE: * Easy to build - no special skills required * Use of readily available building materials* Low cost
* Simplicity of cabin design and structure * Short construction time * No building permit required (optional). * To have a feel of the great outdoor living and wildernessexperience.
On this site you can find information on how to build a small cabin and other related matters: * Selecting the right property * Preparing and clearing your site * Building material selection * Building cabin structure:*
* Foundation
* Flooring
* Walls
* Doors and windows
* Roof
* Interior finishing and design * Building additional structures, to make your small cabin feel morelike home:

* Outdoor summer kitchen * Storage and firewood sheds* Outhouse/toilet
* Veranda / resting area* Outdoor Shower
* Small cabin off-grid living*
* Power source
* Water supply
* Heating options
* Small cabin living - enjoying the great outdoors* Picture gallery
* Safety tips
* Discuss your own project with others like you - ask questions, share experiences, and post pictures of your own cabin! Please keep in mind: THIS SMALL CABIN SITE IS A CONTINUOUS WORK IN PROGRESS. I am constantly adding new information, tips and experiences as I learn new things and continue building. I also aim to add many comments and suggestions as possible from web site visitors - other small cabin builders. Also, if you are considering a larger structure, like a _small cottage_ - conceptually it is similar to the building of a small cabin as described here. So you can use most of the information on this site. To build a small cottage you still need to know how to build a foundation, walls, roof, etc. The difference is that you may want to have more rooms and acquire services like electricity, which requirebuilding permits.
I've tried to make this site as easy to navigate as possible. Use the links on the left side navigation bar to dig into details, or follow page-by-page links at the bottom of eachpage.
Start planning, building and enjoying your own small cabin somewhere in the wilderness... And don't forget to share your thoughts in our Small Cabin Discussion Forum - you're sure to find many like-minded people there. I hope you will find this web site useful.
