EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CREATING HOMESCHOOL Don’t wait until senior year to try to recreate on paper what occurred in each of the three prior years. Keep a running record each year of courses and grades. Next, be sure to include the student’s full name (as it will be listed on the college application) and date of birth. You’d be shocked at the number of transcripts I CAN YOU CHANGE YOUR COLLEGE DECISION AFTER MAY 1? That means the number that they accept for Early Decision (yes, even ED) and Regular Decision will decrease. That decrease can happen for financial reasons, grades, other personal issues, or yes, a change of mind. You’ll see YouVisit is pretty much synonymous with virtual college tours online. But we’re going to use the term virtual loosely. Most colleges don’t require an answer to offers before May 1. We believe you should use that time to your advantage. Visit the schools again, either on their admitted student campus visit days or another time. Find current students in the programs you’ve VIRTUAL GRADUATION PARTY IDEAS: GET GRANDMA ON ZOOM, ORDER Plan A Virtual Party* While everyone is still isolating, you have some time to plan a virtual party. Keep it around your same graduation time, Get your cap and gown together, order some decorations for delivery, and send out evites to your entire family and friends list. WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR 500 WORD COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY Your 500 Word College Application Essay should be about the real YOU. There’s nothing wrong with that advice, but if I were a college admissions officer, I’d be sick by now of essays that begin with a touching little tale about a wise grandfather, a handicapped sibling, or a South American orphan the applicant met on a summer good-workstrip.
CHOOSING A COLLEGE FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS Since choosing a college is an important decision, you want to be sure that you and your teen use the right criteria. A B IN AP OR AN A IN REGULAR CLASS? Over the years, my best advice was take as many AP classes as possible while still maintaining a good mix of A’s and B’s while also staying involved in a few interests (sports, Scouts, job, volunteerism, etc.) outside the classroom. For most colleges, this will place you at least in a competitive range for admission on theacademic side of
SHOULD YOU DISCLOSE LEARNING DISABILITIES ON COLLEGE It’s a false assumption that an application reviewer would label the learning difference as a weakness. A learning difference is not a weakness unless, even with accommodations, the student has not been able to demonstrate successes. Let’s say a student discloses a specific learning difference – WEIGHTED GPA: WHY A 4.0 DOESN’T ALWAYS EQUAL 4.0 For a host of complex and complicated reasons, most high schools now weight advanced courses on the high school transcript. This means an A in a weighted course will receive more than 4 points in the GPA calculation. Advanced/weighted courses generally include those labeled Honors, AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment. There’s a catch, though. APPLYING UNDECIDED: SHOULD YOU OR SHOULDN’T YOU? They may have a well-developed internal transfer process for current students who apply undecided, and work with an adviser during the freshman year. Perhaps you are truly undecided and want a year or two to explore classes from various departments before committing to a major.
